General legal question about business world

Recommended Posts

Here I am, returning with another random, dumb question that I need to know the answer to: I leave a message for somebody at their office. Is it legal for the boss of said employee to listen to the messages on the phones of an employee of theirs? If it is legal, DO employers generally, like, monitor so to say, the messages of their employees??????

Leaving a naughty message eh?

Just go for it. The person you are calling could just pretend you are a crazy stalker, and get sympathy from their co-workers.

It's usually written into the employment contract whether or not an employee can be/is monitored. Generally speaking, if the message is on the companies phone message server, it's the companies message and the boss can listen to them because of his position. The employee could request that the boss not listen to the specific message because it was of a personal nature and if the boss does the employee can take it up with HR and call it some sort of harassment, however -again- depending on the contract, there may or may not be a case there.

If it is the employees personal phone, then the boss has no right to do that.

It's probably legal, but it's doubtful the boss would do so unless the employee has been causing problems and the boss is building up a case to fire said employee. I'm sure the boss has better things to do than monitor everyone's voicemails.
