Classic NFL Highlights from YouTube

Recommended Posts

One of my biggest pet peeves in sports is the NFL's policy of refusing to air classic, original broadcast games from their film archives. Whether it be on ESPN Classic or their own network they don't allow them to be aired. Every other league in every other sport allows access to these classic games but the NFL doesn't want you to see them. Why that is, I've never quite figured out.

So fuck 'em as through the magic of YouTube we can dig up some classic highlights from the original broadcast games and I think this could make a great thread. I'll start it out with posting some classic 49ers moments.

1982 NFC Championship Game vs. Dallas, complete final drive with "The Catch"

1987 vs. Cincinnati, Joe Montana touchdown to Jerry Rice as time runs out

1988 vs. Minnesota, Steve Young's incredible game winning 49 yard touchdown run

Super Bowl XXIII vs. Cincinnati, the complete final drive! (poor quality)

1994 vs. L.A. Raiders, Jerry Rice breaks Jim Brown's career touchdown record

I miss Pat Summerall.

I don't. That Vinatieri kick call had to be one of the most robotic and emotionless "big play" calls I've ever heard. Give me Gino Capaletti having a heart attack after it any day.

A field goal ending is anticlimactic unless it's a longer one. 50 yards or more (and maybe out in the elements) and there's some actual drama, because that's when the nearly automatic kickers have problems too. Anyone who knew football then knew that Vinateri was one of the better kickers in the league, so there wasn't much excitement on my end. This is not to devalue special teams, because the kicks he made that year against the Raiders were huge and true tests of skill.

Heh, I swear Super Bowl XIX is probably the truly forgotten SB. Even amongst the famous blowouts, you never really hear about it, and of Montana's four SB's it's lost among the two close games against Cincy and the complete decimation of Denver. Very ironic for being one of the most hyped games ever.

Any chance Jeff Campell taking out Scott Studwell is on there?

Nope, but here's Wilbur Marshall killing Joe Ferguson.

I think it also gets forgotten, along with the '84 49ers in general, because of what happened the following year with the '85 Bears duplicating the 49ers 15-1 record and doing it it even more dominating fashion in the regular season and of course the Super Bowl.

Thanks for this.

Damn, that Ferguson hit was awesome. He was out long before reaching the ground.

At least nobody's posted the Jim Marshall wrong-way run, or the last second TD by Arizona.

We need to find footage of Randy Moss' pitchback to Moe Williams against Denver. That was a classic play

Side note: After watching the Cunningham play, I liked the Giants 80's/90's unis better than the neo-classic unis they have now

Don't forget Dorsett's 99 yard run, or Drew Pearson "pushing off" in the 1975 NFC title game.
