TWiB 7/24 - 7/30

Recommended Posts

I'm delighted that John Maine had another terrific start today. It was needed after the disastrous outings from Glavine and Trachsel.

Each one of these games turned out to be really good in surprising ways. The first two were hotly-contested slugfests, while today's featured as fine a pitcher's duel as you could hope to see. Fun series.

Yeah, who would've figured the top of the order of the best team in the NL could beat a guy with a 92.00 ERA?

Boy, Glendon sucks. Glad we have him through 2007. Nevertheless, it's for the best. I can only imagine what sort of fallout there'd be if the Cubs swept the Mets. We'd be buyers again!

Oh, and I saw this linked on Fark. I've listened to a couple of Yankee radio games this year and I can understand why Charley Steiner ran screaming to the West Coast.

-----

One game out of the Wildcard.

This was my favorite quote from the site.

He brings shame to a classy organization.

John Sterling is pretty entertaining; I like his home run calls. He usually gives the same enthusiasm when the opposing team scores as well.

Buehrle gets hit hard again. Charged with seven earned in only 5.1 innings. This has been quite the drop-off.

It's probably the scoreboard cheating and giving his signs away no wait they're at home it's because Maddux is throwing a spitball no that's not it

It's funny that the entire Sox starting rotation are having below-average seasons for them (except Contreras) when they all had above-average seasons for them last year.

Yeah, who thought Jon Garland would last. Jon Garland.

Also, what is Contreras, like 40? Dude looks OLD.

Regression to the mean can be a hell of a thing. Glad that the sportswrites are finally starting to catch up to the fact the White Sox are an offensive powerhouse, and that pitching and smallball aren't winning the games this year.

How about Prior having a no-hitter through 5 2/3? His K/BB was 3:5 however, and he had thrown 103 pitches already. But still, that's an encouraging start.

The Dodgers are killing me right now. This stretch starting on Friday and ending at the end of August could fix this, but I'm worried. I like that they play a ton in the division.

It's not like the schedule is tough, because it isn't. The Reds and Padres are pretty much the only teams that I think are quality that the Dodgers will play over the next month.

With that win, the Twins move into a second place tie with the White Sox. The sky is falling.

And, for the moment, there's a three-way tie for the wild-card lead with them and the Yankees.

Aw man, Aaron Miles hit a homerun and I missed it. Of course, it was in Coors Field.

I believe that the newest park factors actually suggest that Coors Field has morphed into a pitcher's park. Gotta love those soggy baseballs.

EDit: Jumped the gun on that one. Coors is playing as a slight hitter's park this year (although that could be a statiscal anomaly - for example, it has Fenway as the hardest place in the majors to hit a HR this year).

Has the Milwaukee bullpen all developed crippling heroin habits or something?

They've been spending too much time trying to make the highlight reels while still physically in the bullpen.

The Brewers sure must not like Carlos Lee as a teammate, the way they've been playing over the past month.

It's just the bullpen that doesnt care for Carlos Lee.

Re: Lee, the Cubs will sign him in the offseason and then he'll get in a car accident and forget what a baseball is. Get what you can out of him, Rest Of Baseball.

I understand that the YANKESS are popular and ESPN would want to show them a lot, but do they have it in the contract they have to show at least 3 YANKESS games a week?

After Brandon Arroyo sat down 10 Astros in a row and Andy Pettitte pitched like his usual sub-par self, the Astros score 6 runs in the 5th thanks in large part to a majestic 450+ ft. homerun by my MVP, Lance "Big Puma" Berkman.

I don't know about the rest of the week, but there's nothing else on worth watching tonight.

And Berkman unloads on another one. Berkman's hit 2 homers tonite, for a total distance of about 900 feet. Berkman's got 34 career homeruns and 96 career RBI in 92 games against the Reds.

That's very frustrating for me, because every time ESPN shows the Yankees it gets blacked out and I get two channels of ESPNnews.
