Going To Houston, TX the week of Labor Day

Ok from Aug 31 to Sept 10 I'll be in Houston, TX and I was wondering what are somethings to do, sights to see, etc. I'll be staying with my friend who lives there so he'll show around me and what have you but, it's always good to have some other opinions.

Having never been there myself, one of the things I do know about Houston is that was (is?) one of the fattest cities in America. So there's bound to be some good places to eat there....with sizable portions too.

"Houston as the fattest city" jokes are soooo two years ago. I think the current fattest city in America is Chicago, with San Antonio, TX being second. I think Houston's third or fourth, but yeah...there's lots of eatatoriums in Houston...with sizable portions.

 

Sugarland, eh? That's like...45 minutes or so outside of Houston. Nice area. If you're into baseball, you could go catch an Astros' game. They should be in the playoff race by that time and tickets are relatively cheap, but parking and refreshments can get pricey. At the Houston Museum of Science they have a really neat exhibit. It's the Bodyworks thing, with the preserved dead bodies in different poses with all their muscle tissue and innards exposed. Uh...I'd imagine they'll have some concerts or something going on that week, depending on what you're into. I don't drink or anything, but I've heard the club/bar scene in Houston is really good. About the only bar/club I go to is this place called the Red Kat Jazz Cafe in downtown Houston, but that's more of a Louisiana jazz club than a bar. Astroworld shut down, so that's out. Uh...if you're feeling adventurous, you could drive about 2 hours down to Galveston beach. They usually have neat stuff happening there. Pretty much everyday in downtown Houston there's something going on, it just depends on what you're in to.

I wasn't making a joke- more of an observation. I saw that Trio documentary on Houston one too many times I guess.

Funny because I am going to Houston,TX on Sept. 15th-25th to see the Skins/Cowboys and Skins/Texans. My best friend lives there so no hotel fees!!!

 

If you find anything fun to do in the Dallas or Houston area, let me know, My friend's been there about two years now and is having trouble finding fun things to do in Texas.

I went to this when it was in LA, it was very interesting.

There isn't a whole lot to do here as far as places to go. Ask most Houstonians and they will say "go to the Galleria" that's fine if you wanna go to a mall where you can't buy shit.

 

My suggestions:

 

-If you are into science, the Houston Science Museum has an exhibit on the Human body and it's muscles that is said to be very good (I'm going next week)

 

-Go to an Astros game...they play the Brewers & Mets

 

-Look at Ticketmaster.com there are some things going on

 

-You can head down to Galveston and go to the indoor Schlitterbaun (if you like water parks)

 

-If you go to Galveston, you can head to the Kemah boardwalk, they have some fun stuff there...outdoor carnival

Yes, it is.

 

I don't know what kind of stuff you'd be interested in doing, but as viva and TSA stated, Houston isn't exactly full of fun for tourists. In addition to the stuff they mentioned, you have the Woods Mitchell Pavillion up north (long way from Sugar Land though) that might have a concert you'd be interested in. It's a good venue. There's also Sam Houston Race Park (horse track) and Gulf Greyhound Park (dog track) if you're into that sort of thing. And then, of course, there are TONS of topless clubs here. If you're looking for that, you won't have a problem finding one.

 

Another good thing is that you can be in Austin and/or San Antonio within about 3 hours. Those are nice places to go for a weekend; you should check them out.

San Antonio is alot better than Houston and it has a lot more to actually do. They have pretty much taken everything fun out of Houston.

 

But like sfajack stated, we do have our topless clubs.

For the most part I don't venture outside of Kansas for my job, and if I do, it's just to go to Missouri or Iowa.

Got back from Houston today and here's just a quick run down. Went to Galveston, went to Kenya (sp?), went to the space center, went to some museums, went to the topless bars (Oh god was that fun), went to some dance clubs downtown and made a fool of myself in the clubs, rented a convertible and finally I lost my cherry to a drunk bitch at a party. Good Times.

Kenya? Either you mean Kemah (the place with the boardwalk, and the best steakhouse I've ever been to, T Bone Tom's) or Houston's new mass transit system can really move. It's good to hear that you had a pleasant time, and it sounds like you had an equal mix of culture and sexual abandon, so that's a plus. And hey...you can't beat drunk Texan women for taking your virginity.
