Vin Scully said that James Loney is likely to stay up, so I'm getting the vibe that he's going to be moved. Olmedo's earned a starting job if he gets dealt, he's a good player and a great hitter. EDIT: Nomar going on the DL answered my question about Loney, but I still find it odd that Olmedo's not out there. Eh.

I guess the Phillies are one of those teams. EDIT: And apparently it was the Phillies that paid Abreu to waive his no-trade clause to make this deal happen. Huh? Couldn't they have just done this move in the offseason and get the same results?

NTCs get worked around all the time. I love how in his press conference Gillick was already talking about how 2007 may be a struggle. If that is the case they really just need to unload anyone over 30 right now, trade the whole bullpen and Lieber. Christ, if we are looking at 2008 Howard and Utley are going to be 27 and 29 respectively. Suddenly the young core to build around isn't so young.

If the season ended today, the Yankees would be in the playoffs. I dont recall Abreu or Lidle being on the team that would make it to the Playoffs as of right now.

Derek Lee, anyone?) Lidle's a throwaway piece because I don't trust ANY NL pitcher moving to the AL in mid-season. He'll eat up some innings, but he's gonna get rocked more often than not.

the pinjockey Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Lidle isn't that good, but in a market where Scott Williamson can fetch two top 30 prospects you can't just use him as a throw in. Worst case scenario is you just keep him for the rest of the year, let him walk and take at least one draft pick he brings back (he might even be a Type A getting two first rounders). Similar to Abreu, if the market isn't what you think, Plan B (keeping him) is not awful.

Jesus Sanchez is an 18 year old catcher with a .343 OBP in the Gulf Coast League. Henry's raw but he's certainly athletic. He hasn't bombed quite like Greg Golson. The only piece that puzzles me is Matt Henry. What does he offer that Eude Brito doesn't? David Dellucci's a pretty good hitter and will provide about 70% of the production Abreu did. This trade depends on whether or not a prospect pans out, and whether the Phils get ahold of Aubrey Huff this offseason. Two years from now, it's a good deal. The Phillies in 1998 were 75-87, and their best prospect was some scrub named Ryan Brannan. Seven years later, the Phils finished above .500 four out of five years, and had drafted and developed Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, and traded their middling shortstop for Bobby Abreu. Ed's really a good guy, and it's a shame he gets so much crap. Especially considering he built a winning team!
KingPK Posted July 30, 2006 Author Report Posted July 30, 2006 If anything, I don't get the timing of the deal. Aren't these types of deals (so-called "salary dumps") more suited for the offseason? I mean, Abreu could have helped a TON of teams offensively and the Phils could have gotten a lot better return in terms of prospects. Why do this now and not wait until the offseason and get basically the same deal (or possibly better)?
