2006 MLB Trade Deadline Thread

Article says Angels, not Dodgers. Good.

EDIT: HOWEVER, every other article that I've read has the Dodgers as frontrunners for both Tejada AND Soriano, and as players in a deal for Maddux.

Something gives me the feeling that Olmedo Saenz is gone for a pitcher. Usually, when Nomar's not in the lineup, he is. Vin Scully said that James Loney is likely to stay up, so I'm getting the vibe that he's going to be moved.

Olmedo's earned a starting job if he gets dealt, he's a good player and a great hitter.

EDIT: Nomar going on the DL answered my question about Loney, but I still find it odd that Olmedo's not out there. Eh.

Phillies three-phase business plan:

1. Trade Bobby Abreu

2. ???

3. Profit!

Haha...the gnomes are stealing the Phillies underpants.

I REALLY didn't want Abreu, sinced I figured it would consist of getting rid of Melky, Duncan or Clippard. But, Cashman has amazed me. Shit, they didn't even need to get rid of Proctor!

Good deal. For my team.

The trade most probably wasn't going to happen if it included Duncan, Clippard, Tabata, and/or Hughes, even for Bobby Abreu. I'm happy Cashman didn't include any of them or Proctor.

Can anyone put a positive Philly spin on the trade? Anyone?

Sure. Philadelphia isn't coming any closer to World Titles than they have been in the past 10 years.

I can't wait to see one of the players that Philadelphia got for Abreu play in the majors. BOOOOOOOOOOOO

Few teams can go into a seller's market and trade a high-caliber player for a sack of money and a handful of magic beans.

I guess the Phillies are one of those teams.

EDIT: And apparently it was the Phillies that paid Abreu to waive his no-trade clause to make this deal happen. Huh? Couldn't they have just done this move in the offseason and get the same results?

Much thanks to Ed Wade for handing out those full no-trade clauses to Abreu and Burrell when he was extending their contracts. May you get avian flu, a ton of STDs, and die Ed.

WOW, someone has got some issues!

I like how the Yankees didn't have to pick up the 2008 option year.

Phuck the Phillies. Buncha phaggots. Just when it seemed a postseason without Derek Jeter was possible they basically bent over and took it up the ass just so the Yankees could contend again. I hate baseball economics.

I don't blame Wade that much for the NTCs as at the time wasn't every decent player getting them at contract time. NTCs get worked around all the time.

I love how in his press conference Gillick was already talking about how 2007 may be a struggle. If that is the case they really just need to unload anyone over 30 right now, trade the whole bullpen and Lieber. Christ, if we are looking at 2008 Howard and Utley are going to be 27 and 29 respectively. Suddenly the young core to build around isn't so young.

If the season ended today, the Yankees would be in the playoffs. I dont recall Abreu or Lidle being on the team that would make it to the Playoffs as of right now.

But it gives them a great plan-B should Matsui and/or Sheffield can't fully come back from their injuries (which is a valid concern. Derek Lee, anyone?)

Lidle's a throwaway piece because I don't trust ANY NL pitcher moving to the AL in mid-season. He'll eat up some innings, but he's gonna get rocked more often than not.

Ditto. If this was an AL pitcher moving to the NL, I'd feel differently.

Lidle isn't that good, but in a market where Scott Williamson can fetch two top 30 prospects you can't just use him as a throw in. Worst case scenario is you just keep him for the rest of the year, let him walk and take at least one draft pick he brings back (he might even be a Type A getting two first rounders). Similar to Abreu, if the market isn't what you think, Plan B (keeping him) is not awful.

Ed's still fucking the franchise even after he left. You try rooting for a team that has ONE World Series title in over 120 years and always seems to be bad.

I am a NY Knicks and Rangers fan. Would you like to meet Glen Sather and Isiah Thomas???

Abreu is the big deal, for the Yankees, not Lidle. I agree with PK that Lidle will eat up some innings, and probably get rocked a few times. NL to AL in pitching never seems to work so well.

Steve Phillips just said that Lidle was a more important acquisition than Abreu. I hate Steve Phillips

Phillips still thinks that trading for Mo Vaughn, Alomar, Burnitz, Kenny Rogers were all great deals.

Sure. I'm intrigued by the last two prospects in the trade. Jesus Sanchez is an 18 year old catcher with a .343 OBP in the Gulf Coast League. Henry's raw but he's certainly athletic. He hasn't bombed quite like Greg Golson. The only piece that puzzles me is Matt Henry. What does he offer that Eude Brito doesn't?

David Dellucci's a pretty good hitter and will provide about 70% of the production Abreu did. This trade depends on whether or not a prospect pans out, and whether the Phils get ahold of Aubrey Huff this offseason. Two years from now, it's a good deal.

Let's review. The Phillies in 1998 were 75-87, and their best prospect was some scrub named Ryan Brannan. Seven years later, the Phils finished above .500 four out of five years, and had drafted and developed Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, and traded their middling shortstop for Bobby Abreu. Ed's really a good guy, and it's a shame he gets so much crap. Especially considering he built a winning team!

If anything, I don't get the timing of the deal. Aren't these types of deals (so-called "salary dumps") more suited for the offseason? I mean, Abreu could have helped a TON of teams offensively and the Phils could have gotten a lot better return in terms of prospects. Why do this now and not wait until the offseason and get basically the same deal (or possibly better)?
