Scorsese's THE DEPARTED

Recommended Posts

Both myself and my firend, who doesn't like anything, just got out of this movie and have declared it the best movie ever. Great acting, great direction, and an ending that had my jaw dropping every few minutes. Wahlberg was especially great in this, and I'd love for him to get an Oscar nod (though he wont).

Eh, I wouldn't really go that far. Earlier I mentioned this was maybe Scorsese's 5th best movie behind Goodfellas, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, and Casino. Departed maybe has a stronger overall plot with tension than Casino, so maybe flip those two.

I'd give the film ***1/2 out of ****. There are a few things that are minor weaknesses or extraneous (the shrink subplot, Nicholson being an FBI informant) and it's a bit draggy after a point with DiCaprio stooging on the mob while Damon keeps Nicholson from being caught. It's a bit repetitive. Made me just want to see the worm turn.

I loved every second of this movie. Just awesome.

Alec Baldwin, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg, all deserve Oscars

Give some love to Leo too.

That part when Leo died came out of nowhere, everyone in the theatre was like "ahhh, damm" but everyone in the theatre was pretty excited at the end to see Wahlberg finish up the movie. If you hated all the killing at the end, just realize that it's the name of the movie. I don't know how another movie tops this as movie of the year.

I can't believe how inconsiderate people are with spoilers. A friend of mine spoiled every single death in the movie to another one of my friends who hadn't seen it yet. He couldn't even understand why it was such a big deal that he spoiled the movie and was smiling and laughing saying shit like "that was tight" while doing it. This is the same person who told me to shut up while I was "spoiling" that stupid hook/bomb stunt in Transporter 2 (which I actually didn't spoil by the way). I guess he values action movie stunts over plot developments.

Why would people go in a movie thread if they didn't want to be spoiled? Never made sense to me.

To get early reaction from people, see what the buzz is. Stuff like that.

I'm paranoid about that stuff though, I don't read any reviews until I see the movie

I get that, but still, this is a forum. It should be expected that by this point, people are going to want to discuss the movie. To me, it's like going into the Raw thread a hour into the show and complaining because people are discussing what's going on during the show, "BUT IM ON THE WEST COAST! DONT SPOIL IT!"

Easily one of the best movies I have ever seen although I just WISH that

Matt Damon would have gotten away with it at the end! His cover-up was so brilliant!

Also, why was Sullivan's buddy a Costello stooge?

After Damon is done in Sheen's office, he's the guy who ragged on Matt for his business look and Matt said something to him about giving him a "hook-up" or something. I assumed it was regarding getting to work for Jack.

As for the pregnancy bit, I really wanted

Damon to find out from Leo that he was fucking her bitch to add to more tension on the roof-top because I was expecting some kind of ultimate showdown at the end ala Face / Off.

Leo fucking the Psych really sucked as a subplot. Matt Damon can't get it up a few times, so she spreads them for someone she only knows as a loser junkie? WEAK.... FUCKING WEAK.

I figured it happened because of the whole "bitches are attracted to assholes" thing. The moment they kissed / started fucking, I yelled "WHORE!" to get some laughs from the audience.

*BUMP*

Out on DVD today, just finished it. Fan-fucking-tastic shit. Wow. I still wouldn't put it up there with Children of Men but this was unquestionably one of the best films in a long, long time. Definetly would be in my top twenty of this decade.

Where in the fuck was Matt Damons Oscar nod for this movie? Anybody who says that the focus is Leo or Jack is fucking retarded. That was all Damon, baby.

Just finished it. Awesome, awesome flick. How awesome? I liked Leonardo fucking DiCaprio's character. They could have made the ending a bit clearer to understand, but Vyce's posts on the second page helped a lot. The only real negative was that they definitely could have done more with Damon's girlfriend;

the affair with DiCaprio and the pregnancy felt kind of tacked on.

Just picked up the fancy-ass steelcase edition at Best Buy. Gorgeous packaging--tin case, with the gun/Boston skyline logo on it. Aesthetically it's one of the best-looking DVDs I've seen. I can't believe I never commented on this movie when it first came out, cause man, was it ever fantastic. I expect that, within 5-10 years, posters for this movie will be taking the place of a fair number of the standard Goodfellas/Godfather posters in college dorm rooms.

Saw it again as well. I do agree now that Damon's character was better than Leo's, but nothing Oscar worthy. I don't know how Marky Mark got an Oscar nomination (but I called it) as I felt Martin Sheen or even Jack Nicholson deserved an Oscar nod.

So if there is going to be a sequel to The Departed will it be a remake of Infernal Affairs 2 or 3?

[spo.....ah, screw the spoiler tag.

There certainly aren't many characters left alive from the original to be in a sequel, are there? If there is one, it'll probably be in a different city with a whole new cast.

Whalberg was kind of like the Joe Pesci of the movie; it may have not been the best performance, but his was the most memorable supporting character of the film. You could tell that Mark was having a ball with his role.

The love for Children of Men on here is a little overboard. In both style and substance The Departed was worlds better. And I can't wait to get the DVD and see it on the huge screen again in my school's theater.

I read somewhere there is going to be a sequel with Whalberg's character. Then a prequel later on. I don't know how true it is, but I read it somewhere.
