Well, looks like Iowa State won 45-43, but since they let Toledo score the TD first, I'll miss out on my miracle push. (I had ISU -8.) However, my bets for Day 1 of the season are looking pretty good overall, as if UTEP wins, I'll finish the day at 3-1.

To be fair, it looks like Bret Meyer was hurt and missed a substantial portion of the game, and ISU has a ton of youth on their defense, so it might take some time for them to come around. I'd still expect them to be a legitimate contender come October and November.

This UTEP/SDS game is wacky one. Both teams making lots of mistakes. And UTEP's defense has suddenly forgot how to tackle. This has the makings for a huge SDS comeback win.

They actually had a chance to make the goal line stand there. Somebody had a hand on the RB and stopped his momentum on the 4th down play, but then he got loose and scored anyway.

 

If the Miners would have just run the ball when they had a three possession lead, this wouldn't have been a problem, but I'm definitely worried at this point.

I was looking around on some college football blogs and noticed that former Michigan QB Matt Gutierrez transfered to Idaho State. Thought that might be news to someone because I certainly didn't know.

I believe he transferred a while ago. It sucks for him that he got hurt in '04 and then Henne came in and had a great freshman year and never gave the job back. Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes. I didn't think Gutierrez was anything special anyways, just ok.

QB Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan): 22/37 for 223 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT. 14 carries for 71 yards and 2 TD.

 

RB Alex Daniels (Minnesota): 25 carries for 155 yards and 3 TD.

 

QB Bret Meyer (Iowa State): 17/24 for 238 yards and 2 TD. 18 carries for 68 yards and 3 TD.

 

WR Alex Watson (Northern Arizona): 12 catches for 214 yards and 2 TD.

I'm still trying to figure out what hell OU lost losing Bomar. I mean I've heard countless people on ESPN, FSN, local news, and what not going "Well they were national title contenders before they lost Rhett Bomar. Now they'll struggle to win the Big 12!"

What the hell? I mean it's not like Bomar was that great. He had like 10 TD passes and something like 3 rushing TDs. Those numbers suck for any big time D-1 QB but then you throw in the fact that he had 10 INTs and lost nearly as many fumbles!? And by all accounts he was a shitty leader according to everyone around the program(and i can personally vouch for this after talking to some team members).

So it's not like they lost Jason White.

It's pretty simple why losing Bomar hurts them. Paul Thompson's worse. If they had a decent backup, it wouldn't have been a problem, but with none of the freshmen ready, you're going from an average QB to a way, way, below average one.

Call me a crazy fan, but Tennessee could be a top 10 team by the end of the third week of the season. They might not necessarily be a top 10 team, but two high-profile wins against Cal and Florida (in primetime on CBS in Florida's case) would do a lot to prompt "Tennessee is back" stories.

 

Then again, maybe I'm just too excited for the season to start. I'm in the "we're gonna kick the crap out of everyone!" phase that you reach right before kickoff after weeks of "man, we're gonna get killed."

God, I am so, so, pumped for the Georgia Tech game tonight. I was up late last night , but I subconsciously knew I couldn't sleep through College Gameday from Atlanta, and I woke up about half an hour in. I can't wait for CJ to tear up the Irish.

But he's not. Actually we don't know how good he is. Backing up Jason White he played better than Bomar did last season.

But against TCU he was horrid.

But also in that game he was looking over his shoulder the entire game(he even admits that he was tight and afraid to mess up b/c he knew his job would be gone), he had no blocking(the o-line was terrible), and he had no good receivers.

This year he has a better O-Line and better receivers and he's not looking over his shoulder the whole time.

On top of that Stoops admits that they probably set him up to fail by putting him in Jason White's offense(which he couldn't run) rather than sticking him in an offense tailored for his strengths.

Kevin Wilson claims they'll play to Thompson strengths today which are running, bootlegs, and short passes.

 

So we'll see. I think TCU wasn't indicative of how good he is but I could be wrong. He could throw several picks and fumble against UAB. They still won't lose to UAB though b/c of Peterson and the defense.

But I just heard some yahoo on a sports betting show talking about how UAB was just like TCU and how they'll upset OU again. The other guy pointed out that TCU was waaaaaay better than UAB and he also pointed out that OU is better this year than last year.

Of course if Peterson sprains his ankle in the first game again like he did last year then all is fucked.

Me and Porter discussed this the other day but I figured I'd pose the question here.

What made Vince Young special?

I mean he wasn't the greatest running QB ever and he wasn't the greatest passing QB ever. But the analysts, NFL draft guys, commentators, everyone said "I've never seen anyone like him! There's nobody to compare him to! He's special!"

I even remember people trying to compare him to Vick and then other people saying "he's nothing like Vick."

I mean he's not as fast as Vick and I don't know if he has all the moves that Vick does but he runs really well. But like I said he's not the best running QB ever.

So what made him so special? I can't put my finger on what made people say "i've never seen anything like him!'

Vandy is hanging A LOT closer with Michigan than I think anyone expected. If they had any kind of offense they'd be winning this game.

What made Young impressive to me was his size. Vick did what he did while being about as big as a speed-oriented running back, but Young was such a bigger target. It was unbelieveable to see someone miss a tackle on the guy because he was that fleet on his feet. The longer strides also made him look slower than he was.
