This is actually pretty meh. I've been a fan of Al's work for years, but it seems to be steadily declining with each new album. The other song released from his new CD, Don't Download This Song, was pretty entertaining, but this song isn't that funny, and is pretty much derivative of his Puff Daddy parody a few years back, but then I don't think anyone ever tries to accuse Al Yankovic of originality too often since most of his popular songs are about TV or Food.

I've been a fan of Weird Al for years, but a problem I'm finding as I've gotten older is, for the most part, I have no clue about the original songs he's parodying anymore (ex: this one)

This doesn't scream "scathing satire/parody" the way that "I Lost on Jeopardy!" or "Fat" once did. I do wonder, however, if Chamillionaire will have beef with Weird Al, ala Coolio back in the day. Cha looks rough, yo.

He should be honored. Who the flying fuck is "Chamillionaire"?

He reps Tha Dirrrty Third, yo. Whatchu know about candy cars and sippin' syrup, playboy?

...Yeah, he's from Houston. Like...the really bad part of Houston, where you can go to the barber shop and get new rims for your car or like...a plasma TV.

I love "Don't Download This Song". It sounds like the perfect parody of shitty MOR bands like Air Supply.

I'm guessing it's supposed to be a big round-up-the-music-industry-for-an-important-cause song, like "We Are The World" or "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

Camp Chaos did a pretty good parody (with video) of that back in '01 or so with "Sue All the World"

One of my favorite parts was how they had Dr. Dre next to a rapping Eminem, and Eminem would keep pausing while Dre fed him his lines

I don't think Camp Chaos was ever funny, but that's probably just me.

"Genius in France" is clever in how it manages to represent almost all of Frank Zappa's compositional quirks over the years in a nine-minute song, and "Bob" is clever, but I can see where someone would outgrow Weird Al.

Chamillionaire gave Weird Al his blessings and even announced that Weird Al was making a parody.

I believe Al Yankovic to be a great man, and I respect his ability to write sometimes-clever parody lyrics. But I have no interest in listening to his music, especially at this stage in my life.

I can almost guarentee there are only like a handfull of people right now who could make the "real" sizzurp. Chamillionare doesn't look like one...

I don't get why this guy has fans older than 14-years-old.

This would actually make sense if Weird Al relied on nothing but toilet humor and dick jokes.

Even then, this "Weird Al is teen music" sentiment you and Edwin put forth doesn't make any sense

This reminds me, what the frick does "Riding Dirty" mean?

Dude, you can say "what the fuck" here.

Also, I think it means being got with pot in your car.

I'm not suprised.

yes, drugs of any kind really. Which is why I like the song. (not the parody)

I can't conceive it being anything but teen music. I mean, it's not funny at all. That's all it's supposed to be and it fails. Parody, when done poorly, is one of the lowest forms of art.

Look at this song. It's a "parody" of a really popular song. But it's not really a parody, because it just uses the beat to discuss subject matter that doesn't pertain to the original at all. This is the formula for almost all of his songs (or at least the ones I've heard--I will confess that I have never had any interest at all in listening to anything beyond the 20 or so songs he's gotten played on VH1 and MTV). Half the time his song is based on the fact that the title rhymes with the title of the original song. Internally, they're never funny either. Not being full of dick and fart jokes doesn't somehow transform this into anything tolerable. I guess my big problem is that I barely consider it music, because it's honestly devoid of content sonically, lyrically, or even conceptually. It's comedy devoid of humor and it's not even absurd enough to warrant a "what the hell is this guy thinking."

My assessment: Weird Al fails to succeed as an example of any genre and isn't nearly interesting enough to get the "genre-defying" label. I'd rather listen to Pulp's "Bad Cover Version" than any Weird Al song, ever.

Congrats Edwin: You sound like a hipster who reads too much Pitchfork.

Actually he's pretty decent with his original compositions (as Czech said, he did a good job mimicing Zappa for his FZ tribute song), but I don't think I've ever heard/seen any of his original work hit the airwaves, it's always his parodies that get publicity (understandably so).
