Why did Houston pick Williams #1 again?

They picked Williams because their defense was actually a hell of a lot worse than its offense. That and it was originally thought Davis knee wasn't that bad. But yeah, even I'm thinking that Houston made a mistake by passing on Bush.

That's not true. It's been known Davis' knees were messed up since the start of last year. That's why the pick still puzzles me. But, who knows, WALI Lundy may be the better back!

The Texans were fucked the night before the draft when the news broke that they'd take Mario #1. It was a PUSSY move. Unless he's the next Reggie White, I fear Mario will never get any good press in Houston.

Picking Williams because they were afraid of the potential holdout from Bush and refusing to trade down is the dumbest thing a GM not named Matt Millen did during the draft. I would of chosen Vince Young who could of been promoted as the next great running QB and local hero. He was hot off of winning the College National Championship where he was the shining star of the game, that alone could of sold alot of season tickets and sky boxes for the Houston Texans.

Yeah, but the problem is, Carr's deal (last I checked) still hits them hard for the cap and frankly they didn't want that. That and by saying Carr is a failure would immediately be asking for heads. Although, they already are asking for them.

They refused to trade down because honestly no one wanted to move up. And as it was said, when it was told they were taking Mario Williams, it basically made the pick untradable.

As far as the holdout with Bush, they were addressing their biggest need which is defense (regardless of how bad Davis' knee was). Sure, RB was just as bad, but the hope that Davis could make a comeback was still there.

That's not true. It's been known Davis' knees were messed up since the start of last year. That's why the pick still puzzles me. But, who knows, WALI Lundy may be the better back!

Yes, it was messed up. But it wasn't said to be to the extent that Davis would never play again, at least not until recently. But yeah, why pass on a back like Bush? If it was because you think he'd hold out, why basically screw everything up by letting it be known that you have absolutely no intentions of taking Bush and screwing your chance to get out of the pick.

Of all the cuts today, Rob Petitti's is the most baffling. The kid started 16 games at right tackle for Dallas last year.

And according to Bill Parcells, Petitti made only four mental errors in about 1,000 plays.

People in the Cowboys front office said no one had a better off-season than Petitti, who with the help of strength and conditioning coach Joe Juraszek completely overhauled his body.

I would think that Petitti had no clue this was coming. Parcells had mentioned him as the swing tackle, which meant he would back up both Flozell Adams and Marc Colombo.

Do we need some help at OT now? I think so. Put this guy in a Packer uniform.

Dayne would be a good fit on the injury-prone Bears. Plus, for a team that runs the ball, and runs the ball, it wouldn't hurt to have a big banger on the roster.

If he can avoid injuries, Najeh Davenport is a future star on another team. I think Green Bay had a similar back with more speed in Samkon Gado, and he isn't as injury prone, so Najeh was gone as a result. And Pettiti would only make sense in a Packer uniform if he could play the guard position well. I think right guard is still the spot that's up for grabs. Jason Spitz played well, I don't know what the fuck happened to Daryn Colledge who came in to the preseason pencilled in as the starter at left guard, had one bad game against San Diego, and has been in the coaches' doghouse ever since.

Preferably I'd like to see Spitz and and Colledge both starting, just knowing so we didn't waste any draft picks... Well as long as they both played well.

And with Gardner gone, is the rookie Greg Jennings going to start? Favre likes him, so that bodes well for him. Maybe he can be Javon Walker 2004, the 2006 version.

Bills released Jonathan "Fast Freddy" Smith and Lionel Gates. Mild surprises. Smith should hook on with some team, as he's a decent returner.

QB Quinton Porter got cut by Houston :( Damn...thought he could've made a fine 3rd QB and eventual backup.

Don't be surprised if Porter goes to the practice squad. He had the inside track on the 3rd job until Kubiak decided to go with only 2 QBs on the roster.

BTW, I was one of those who wanted Bush. However, looking at the preseason Bush has had, I gotta agree with Kubes that he wouldn't fit in with the offense the Texans are now running. His one big run came on a cutback all the way across the field away from the design of the play. There's very little room for that in the zone blocking scheme. One cut and go is pretty much all that's allowed. That fits the Texans' RB styles (except for maybe Vernand Morency, but it looks like he's picked it up well). Mario, just going by the preseason, has opened up his linemates (especially Peek) and has led to several sacks and TFLs. All in all, I have learned to accept and live with the decision.

BTW Harley, Lundy was actually drafted by the Texans in the 6th round. Chris Taylor is the UFA the Texans kept.

I love fans sometimes. All preseason it has been "oh our RBs are injury prone, what happens if/when one goes down". Then the Eagles keep 5 RBs (one who is going to be the PR and another who will be the KR) and all of a sudden it is "oh those morons, why are we keeping 5RBs instead of keeping Darnerian freaking McCants". Maybe the FO knows that the RBs are injury prone and want to keep something just in case.

Christ they conned a draft pick out of Seattle for Josh Parry (is Seattle's GM a drunk?). Maybe they can get the benefit of the doubt today.

..and the best part is, with all five RBs, Reid still won't run the ball.

Patriots bolster their WR corps by getting Doug Gabriel from the Raiders for a 5th rounder. The guy is a threat to go deep (his career average is nearly 16 yards a catch) and could serve as a decoy for Ben Watson. I'd like them to take a look at Charles Rogers, since he'd actually have a quality NFL QB throwing to him for once.

They also cut Bam Childress, which is a bit surprising, but he'll probably get signed to the practice squad.

Well, the Texans got their Heisman Trophy winning RB today, as they picked up Ron Dayne on waivers from Denver (of course). I guess they figured he can be their goal line back, but I'm somewhat surprised they cut Chris Taylor to make room for him. Taylor showed some pretty good ability for a bigger running back. I hope he makes it through waivers so the Texans can get him on their practice squad.

Chargers LB shot by off-duty officer By BERNIE WILSON, AP Sports Writer

Chargers linebacker Steve Foley was shot near his upscale suburban house by an off-duty policeman early Sunday morning in his second run-in with police in 4 1/2 months. Coach Marty Schottenheimer said the wounds were not life-threatening.

"All we're worried about is that he's OK," Schottenheimer told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

Foley's agent, David Levine, told the AP that Foley was shot three times and had surgery for wounds to his leg, arm and chest.

"He's out of danger at this point," Levine said.

The Chargers will open the season at Oakland on Sept. 11, the day Foley turns 31.

Sheriff's officials said the early morning shooting occurred after the off-duty Coronado police officer followed a suspected drunken driver weaving in and out of freeway traffic at speeds up to 90 mph. Authorities said the driver nearly collided with several other vehicles.

Foley stopped three times, sheriff's officials said. During one of the stops, Lisa Maree Gaut, a passenger in the vehicle, yelled at the officer, authorities said.

The shooting occurred after Foley got out of the vehicle near his home and began walking toward the officer, sheriff's officials said. Gaut got behind the wheel and drove next to Foley in the direction of the officer, the officials said.

The officer identified himself, authorities said, and warned Foley he was armed. He fired a warning shot, at which point Gaut steered the car at the officer, sheriff's officials said.

"The officer fired two rounds at the vehicle," sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos said. "The male then came at the officer and put his right hand by his waistband and the officer fired at him."

Paramedics were called to the neighborhood in Poway, northeast of San Diego, at 3:47 a.m. and transferred a trauma victim to Sharp Memorial Hospital.

Sheriff's officials wouldn't say how many times Foley was shot or what, if any, charges will be filed against him.

Coronado police also declined to give any information about the off-duty officer. Coronado, a wealthy peninsular enclave, is across the bay from downtown San Diego. Sheriff's officials said the off-duty officer first encountered Foley on a freeway in northern San Diego.

Gaut, 25, was booked into Las Colinas Detention Facility on suspicion of DUI and assault with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $17,500. She was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Meanwhile, authorities towed a Cutlass Supreme with a purple interior late Sunday afternoon from the neighborhood of spacious ranch homes, large lots and towering eucalyptus trees.

Neighbor Kent Goodman said the car belonged to Foley. According to the Chargers' media guide, Foley and his father restored a 1971 Cutlass Supreme.

Another neighbor, Rick Jennings, said he was awake at 3:40 a.m. when he heard yelling outside. He went outside after hearing two loud pops he thought were firecrackers.

"I heard a female scream, 'Let it go! No, no, no!' And then four more shots. I heard more screaming and then two more shots and in seconds the first marked officer showed up."

Goodman, who lives three doors from Foley, said he awoke to what he thought was the revving of Foley's car.

"It sounded like his car backfired a couple times. A few seconds passed and I heard more revving and then rapid shots. They were in rapid succession," Goodman said.

Foley had lived at the Poway home for about 1 1/2 years.

Foley, who played at Northeast Louisiana from 1994-97, has played eight seasons in the NFL, for Cincinnati, Houston and San Diego. He signed with the Chargers in March 2004. That year he set career highs with 10 sacks and five forced fumbles.

Foley was arrested April 21 on charges of resisting arrest after police said he scuffled with officers. He also was booked on charges of battery on a police officer and public drunkenness.

The district attorney's office said recently it was not pursuing charges against Foley in that incident.

The Chargers did not practice on Sunday.

From what I gather, the cop did all that he could. He notified Foley numerous times that he was a cop, called for backup, fired warning shots, and yet Foley still came at him and the female drove the car at the cop.

I've read at other forums that Foley has been arrested 3-4 times prior for things like DUI.

*wishes DUIs were treated with harsher penalties*

I think he's a steal for a 5th round pick. He's more a big target WR, than a speed guy. Considering how poor Caldwell has looked, I wouldn't be surprised if he starts very soon.

Gabriel was a fan favorite in Oakland, so I'm surprised they let him go. I guess Curry starts there now.

Hell of a time to get appendicitis...

It goes along with my gut feeling that this just isn't going to be a good year for Pittsburgh. I'm not saying that because they are "hated" rivals (I'm one of the very few Cincy natives who holds no ill will against them) but I just feel that after Ben's wreck, the lost of Bettis (I'm not talking about his on-field contributions) and that Cower might not have that same motivation as he once did.

I really, really hate that the Jags have to play Dallas in Week 1. Fucking T.O. shit all over the broadcast is going to make me ill.

I'll predict that DeAngelo Williams will be the Panthers' starter at runningback by their bye week. Probably won't even be due to injury, Williams will be so impressive in limited time that the coaches won't have any other choice but to put him in as the starter. DeShaun Foster will be traded at the end of the season and forgotten about.

Keyshawn Johnson will make a major difference on offense. He and Jake Delhomme have already developed the kind of chemistry that made Delhomme-to-Muhammad and Delhomme-to-Smith such productive combinations. Johnson has looked great when he has needed to make a catch in traffic and has caught every pass thrown his way. That is just the type of consistency needed to take a little pressure off of Steve Smith. Drew Carter and Keary Colbert have both looked impressive as well. Carter, in particular, has alot of potential to develop into a solid #2 or even a #1 option in a couple of years. He is 6'3" and faster than Steve Smith.

I also wouldn't be shocked to see rookie linebacker James Anderson put up some impressive statistics. He has already shown the ability to put pressure on the quarterback from any direction and will likely be used in a role similar to Thomas Davis' last season. Will Witherspoon = Overrated, atleast in terms of his importance to the Panthers' defense. The linebackers have looked just fine without him and if I had to point out one weakness on our defense, atleast from the preseason, it has been the secondary.

I look forward to the season.

I'm thinking Gabriel is the current #1 right now in Pats land just because of what he can do.

And frankly 5th is such a steal for him. I would've expected them giving up more than that.

Not.even.a.chance.

I figure the #1 will be Reche Caldwell with the #2 being Troy Brown. I've heard things that Chad Jackson has been struggling with getting the playbook thus his slow progression so I think it's between CJ and Gabriel as the 4th WR at the moment. Given how well Bam Childress has played, I wouldn't be surprised if he saw some time at the #3 WR slot. I could see Bam/Gabriel alternating turns at the #3 spot with Bam getting the role first. I think eventually CJ will wind up as the #3 with Gabriel netted as the #4 in the deep threat role.
