Man I hate really hate the Angels. A's down 5-0 in the 5th. Why can't these assholes give up like a normal team who's down seven games with eight to play?

"This Angels team is full of grit and determination. They don't wait around for the "3 run homer" or look to walk, they make things happen, they use their speed and intangibles to manufacture runs. By the way, the A's inability to manufacture runs will once again cost them in the playoffs. Billy Beane is going to have to reprogram his computer that wrote Moneyball"

Hoffman becomes new saves leader as Padres beat Pirates

SAN DIEGO -- Trevor Hoffman became baseball's career saves leader on Sunday, earning No. 479 to pass Lee Smith and help the NL West-leading San Diego Padres beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1.

If an all-time record was set today but nobody cared, did it really happen?

My point is that on the "major sports sites" I checked (sportsline, ESPN, SI) it's not even the main story. A meaningless week 3 Bengals/Steelers game seems to be of more importance than a career record being set, and that's just sad.

I agree with this.

Toronto's now a half game away from second in the AL East. This will be the race to watch going into the last week of the season.

I don't think you have anything to worry about here, considering the Sox play the Rays and Orioles, and the Jays play the Tigers and Yankees.

The reason Hoffman isn't getting attention is just because it occured on Football day with many important games being played (especially the aforementioned Bengals/Steelers game) but because Hoffman isn't a star like Rivera as far as closer goes.

It's still just a closer getting another save. Saves aren't HR's or hits, people just don't see a reason to care about it.

Honestly, Gagne setting the save streak got more pub than Hoffman setting the record. Not that I think it's up there with say Favre throwing his 400th TD in terms of importance, it's certainly more "newsworthy" than Bengals/Steelers or Colts/Jags in week 3. Shit, lead with the Favre achievement if you've got to have football on the main page.

I'm kinda disappointed with the win tonite. I wanted another walk-off. :(

No, seriously, this was damn sweet. Sure, the Cards haven't been playing well and the Astros will probably have to go 7-0 and the Cards 3-3 for the rest of the season...and then they would have that 1/2 game to make up with the Giants...and then a one-game playoff, but still...the Astros played these games like they haven't played for much of the season. Good pitching. Clutch hits. Come from behind wins. The Astros team that played these 4 games probably could go to the WS and hold their own. Unfortunately, they still have only a slim chance to win the division.
