Crimson Platypus 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2006 Wow, I still can't believe that the Spartans fell apart like that. I feel so bad for the MSU fans, because they have a joke of a head coach in John L. Smith He took the ball out of Stanton's hands, and tried to sit on a lead against a team that can put up points with anyone. With a defense that bad, you have to go for the throat, not call obvious screen passes on third and 3 My thoughts exactly on that game. Smith is a horrible coach who can't recruit. And MSU rebounding to be a top 25 team is practically impossible considering the beatings that UofM and OSU are going to put on them, combined with their usual loss to a team they should beat (not counting ND in that). Hopefully this will be John L.'s last year here.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 26, 2006 What are these CFN polls. I've never heard of them before. It was 5 years ago that Illinois was in the Sugar Bowl? I didn't think it was that long. It's a shame how quickly they dropped after that.

Nick Saban had a lot of the same problems when HE was at Michigan State, as he'd lose big recruits to U of M and other Big Ten schools then would start off the season good before blowing it all at the end of the year and get raped in a bowl game. If Sullivan habitually has late-game collapses like the one against Notre Dame, THAT is his fault because he can't coach a full 4 quarters.

Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2006 What are these CFN polls. I've never heard of them before. collegefootballnews.com ranks all 119 teams every week. This week's poll They have a tendency to cling to a few teams each year and keep them inordinately high no matter the situation, and some of their logic is really screwed. However, they're also much better than the AP/Coaches/Harris/whatever poll at ranking based on how good the team is, not what their schedule looks like. Plus, it's kinda fun to figure out how they order all the lousy teams in the second half of the rankings. Stewart Mandel at SI.com now does full rankings too. I prefer his because he shows where he had every team the week before.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 26, 2006 Oh, that's some site. Why the heck is USC #1 over OSU.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 26, 2006 Plus, it's kinda fun to figure out how they order all the lousy teams in the second half of the rankings. I'll play with that. FIU is better than 114th. All their games have been close against decent competition this year. Northern Illinois should be higher. That's a pretty good football team there. Mostly because of Wolfe. I know the Ohio loss doesn't look good, but they're going to be an over .500 team. If we're only judging by how good we think the teams are, there's no way in poop that Syracuse and UNC are in the Top 60.
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2006 There is no way Syracuse (59) or North Carolina (60) are better than Navy (62) and Oklahoma State (63). There is also no way that Colorado is better than 46 other programs, or that Illinois is better than 36 others.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2006 I think Arizona at #40 is pretty egregious. Yes, I know they received their ass-beatings from two of the nation's best teams, but it's not like they had them on the ropes till the 4th quarter. I guess the BYU win is okay. Actually, Arizona DID have USC on the ropes until late in the 3rd, down only 3-0 in a game that should have been an easy blowout. The LSU game was over about as fast as it started, though. Guest Report post Posted September 26, 2006 The score of the Arizona-USC game is very, very misleading. Arizona did not do shit.
Guest Princess Leena Report post Posted September 26, 2006 I didn't see Arizona. They should be much, much lower. Their win over BYU was deceiving, as they really shouldn't have won that.
iggymcfly 0 Report post Posted September 26, 2006 I'll defend LSU at #4. I wouldn't feel right putting them that high with a loss, but honestly, I think they're better than Auburn right now. Play that game at a neutral site or get the pass interference call right, and they're 4-0 at #2 or #3. I think they're the best team in the SEC talent-wise, even though they'll still probably pick up another loss at Florida.
Spicy McHaggis 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 I completely disagree that recruiting is based more on the school than the coach. If the coach is lazy, then yes, his class will only be as good as his region's players... and he will lose the better players to the bigger name schools in the same region. But if a coach does his job and recruits aggressively, the name starts to become less important. If it were true that recruiting was based on name alone, then Notre Dame and USC should not have gone into the slumps they did, and Miami should not be getting progressively worse each year. But instead, in the case of the Trojans, Pete Carroll and his staff hit the phones like madmen and took USC to the top of recruiting within one year of Carroll's arrival... and within two years of the worst team the school has ever fielded. Guest Report post Posted September 27, 2006 It's the coach. Look at Arizona's recruiting classes, they're star studded. It also helps when you take on troubled kids, like Mike Stoops has. *I have first hand knowledge of this, so please don't doubt me. A kid that's playing for his program right now cheated on a bunch of high school tests, was caught, and had extremely low SAT scores among other things. How the kid got to play in the Army High School Game, I have no clue. Larry Coker just doesn't know how to recruit, that's why Miami sucks. You have to know your boundaries. Crimson Platypus 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2006 Tom Izzo has no problem recruiting at the same school. It's not the school at all. You seem to be forgetting the players that Saban got to go to MSU: T.J. Duckett and Julian Peterson just to name two off the top of my head.
lomasmoney 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2006 People forget that Saban was building State into a real program before he left. He brought in so much talent, and it was just finally starting to gel. I believe they went like 10-2 in his last season and beat Florida in the bowl game. He also brought in Jeff Smoker and Charles Rogers, and in Rogers's junior season, quite a few people were picking MSU to win the Big 10 with Bobby Williams as their coach. Its pathetic that MSU hasn't won a conference title in 16 or 17 years. Wisconsin has three, Purdue has one or two, Michigan has like 8, OSU has a ton. I think that Indiana, Minnesota, and MSU are the only teams that have not won the Big 10 since 1990, and well one of those schools is a basketball powerhouse, one school doesn't have their own stadium, and the other is a perinnial choke artist. MSU is great in other sports like hockey and basketball, but in football, they just blow it every single time and even though I'm a lifelong Michigan fan, I always want to see the little brother program do well. Until they get rid of Smith they will struggle to shed the "loser" moniker
