The OAO 2006 US Elections Thread

I love all the attack ads. It makes for fine comedy.

I don't vote, however, since politics is nothing but childish bullshit and they're all lying assholes anyway.

They're lying assholes that get absolute control over a third of your income and a say in whether you live or die.

If you consider that childish bullshit, then maybe you shouldn't be voting.

They all do act childish but I myself still vote. Although if I can't find a candiate worth a damn, like those running HE LIKES BUSH LOLOMGROFL ads while not bothering to tell me what they exactly support, then I usually write in or blank it.

Though this year, I'm having to search for a reason to go vote because it's bad here. Both guys are exactly the same in every area, the only difference is one guy says "Well Bush is the President so yeah, I support him" while the other screams, "SEE! HE LOVES BUSH! HE LOVES BUSH! BUSH IS HITLER! NO BLOOD FOR OIL! GREEN DAY RULZ!"

As someone who doesn't like or dislike Bush, this election sucks. Even the websites and news clipping search I do has been horrible because it has been nothing about policy and all about how much Bush sucks or how great Bush is. No middle ground.

In Missouri, the Senate campaign has been about stem cell research, nursing homes, and medicare spending. I can't recall one ad mentioning Bush.

Thing is, there is some value in comparing candidates to the President. Considering Talent votes 94% of the time with Bush, and most people are unfamiliar with how he stands on some issues (...well, really, all issues, considering he doesn't exactly have a platform worth speaking about), it's a good idea to let people know that he stands for the values of a President with whom only 34% of Missourians agree. Thus, the "standing with Bush" ad is useful; if you're voting, would you choose the rubber stamp of someone who you don't support just because he's your rubber stamp? Of course not.

If a President has been terrible, and a candidate agrees with his mistakes nearly all the time, then it definitly is a viable reason to vote one way/the other.

2GOLD's hyperbole is sometimes very misguided.

I'm saying the candiates AREN'T agreeing with Bush. I'm talking about candiates who basically say, "hey, he's the president and while I don't like his decisions, I'll support the office."

That's all.

If the guy was a SERIOUS Bush backer, ok it makes sense. These guys where I am aren't. Except maybe Ting but no one is voting for him anyway. I'm talking like a county council seat for god sake.

The thing is, you just made a broad statement, and in your retraction, you completely narrowed your criticism to a demographic that doesn't exist. City council candidates won't even be on the air yet, and there aren't any candidates saying that they "support the office" and getting lambasted over it. It's mostly the House and Senate candidates who rubberstamp the president who are getting killed with those sorts of ads.

Mine is wrapped for the elections to my area and my state and that is what I'm getting. I want the candiates to show they stand for something other than "I don't like Bush" and all the info I find on them, the ones I must vote on, are about not liking Bush. And yes, my stupid county democrats are campaigning on the seats already (boredom maybe?) and are using the same tactic, which makes no sense when the guy is running for a stupid county seat. Course the Republicans in my county are big time gay bashers and that doesn't sit well with me anyway. If its not like that for other areas, god damn you folks are super lucky. Mine is and will always be centered on DE since I cannot vote on the other candiates and I only monitor the out of state ones when the guy is mentioned as a future nominee. My bad for not explaining clearly and you and Snuff are right, it was very broad and seemed generalized. But I assumed everyone would understand it was about Delaware politics. My bad.

Apparently things are done differently where Jerk is and that actually sounds like what I want. I want some actual discussion about the candiates and not this constant "He likes Bush" stuff. One thing I am getting a lot of is the Steele/Cardin ads which is Steele talking about his issues and then Ben boy responding with "Steele likes puppies but he LOVES George Bush". Thankfully I don't have to vote in that one cause I really have no CLUE what Ben stands for anymore.

I thought Carper vs Ting would be interesting but Ting did the stupid thing and didn't go for the illegal immigration issue which is the big thing for DE since we have a high illegal population. So that fight really IS over and done with. Hell, Ting is barely even putting up a defense anymore.

The big one now I guess is Biden III against...well some other guy who is just as unqualified to be our DA.

It benefits them when you get disillusioned and refuse to hold them accountable. They count on young people being morons, so that they can focus their efforts on benefitting the few people in this country that do, in fact, vote. If you're perfectly comfortable paying 1/3 of your check to people whom you had no say in electing, well, you're a moron.

I don't see any Democrats yelling about cutting taxes, and I don't see many Republicans yelling about keeping "young people here."

There are strong distinctions between parties and candidates that you seem to be completely unaware of.

The argument that both parties are the same is just an excuse to not be informed. And there are many, many examples of politicians in recent years keeping their promises. Bush (for better or worse) has pretty much done most of what he promised during the 2000 campaign.

GOP terrorism ad sparks Democratic furor

(CNN) -- Republicans took a page from President Johnson's Cold War-era presidential campaign with an advertisement set to air this weekend called "The Stakes," which prominently features al Qaeda leaders threatening to kill Americans.

"Just like in the Cold War, the reality is that our nation is at war with an ideology and not a country," said Republican National Committee spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt.

Democrats, however, have called the commercial, which is reminiscent of Johnson's 1964 "Daisy" ad, a "desperate ploy to once again try to scare voters."

The advertisement, which is available on the Republican National Committee Web site, is scheduled to run on national news networks Sunday. Republicans are emphasizing national security and terrorism issues in their bid to maintain control of Congress with about two weeks before the November midterms. (Watch how terror has been a popular theme on the campaign trail -- 2:10)

The ad features al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and his top lieutenant, Ayman al-Zawahiri, speaking, but the only sound is a ticking clock in the background. The terror leaders' quotes are posted on the screen and key phrases in the quotes stand alone as the rest of the quote fades out.

In one instance, bin Laden is quoted as saying, "With God's permission we call on everyone who believes in God ... to comply with His will to kill the Americans." As the text of the quote fades out, "kill the Americans" remains on the screen.

Another bin Laden quote: "They will not come to their senses unless the attacks fall on their heads and ... until the battle has moved inside America" -- fades out, leaving only "inside America" on the screen.

Meanwhile, footage of terrorists engaged in martial arts and weapons training rolls in the background. One scene shows terrorists traversing monkey bars over fire.

The ticking clock morphs into a heartbeat as the ad comes to a close, and the only spoken words on the commercial announce, "The Republican National Committee is responsible for the content of this advertising." (View "The Stakes" at the RNC Web site)

The ad plays off of Johnson's powerful "Daisy" ad, which CNN senior political analyst Bill Schneider called "the most famous political ad in American history." Johnson used the ad in his successful re-election bid against Barry Goldwater.

In the "Daisy" ad, a small girl counts to 10 as she picks petals from a flower. When she reaches 10, the camera zooms in on her eye and an ominous voice counts backward from 10 to zero.

When the countdown reaches zero, a nuclear bomb explodes, followed by Johnson speaking.

"These are the stakes to make a world in which all God's children can live or to go into the dark," Johnson says on the ad. "We must either love each other or we must die."

A voice follows Johnson's, urging viewers to re-elect the Texas Democrat and says, "The stakes are too high for you to stay home."

The Democratic National Committee issued a statement saying the new Republican ad was an attempt to distract voters from GOP failures.

"Once again we see that the GOP will truly do and say anything regardless of whether or not it's true, they are so desperate to hold onto power," Democratic National Committee Communications Director Karen Finney said in a statement. "Clearly Republicans are so afraid of their abysmal record they can't offer one example of what they've done to keep America safe."

Republicans contend otherwise and say the ad "underscores the high stakes America faces in the global war on terror by using the words of the terrorists themselves as they describe their intention towards the United States," according to a statement.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/10/20/gop.ad/index.html

Instead of whining, the Democrats just need to make an ad that's a 30-second loop of the 2003 clip of Bush saying he wasn't concerned with bin Laden.

I swear, just like in 2004, the Democrats are holding back so much its like they WANT to loose or something.

Are you getting any of the O' Malley vs. Erlich coverage, 2GOLD?

Not at all. Just the county seat junk, DE DA race, and Cardin/Steele stuff.

Whats going on with O'Malley vs Erlich?

I don'k know...but I will guess that Erlich is making the same pledges he did the first time he ran for governor, and O Malley is reminding him that he hasn't done much of anything while he's had power.

CONSTELLATION ENERGY FOR EVRYBODY!

Here in the great state of Maine, there are three elections, the elections for U.S. Senate (Olympia Snowe-R) and Congress (Tom Allen-D) are going to be absolute blowouts. Governor John Baldacci (D) is slightly favored to get re-elected, despite something like a 41% approval ratingbut it wouldn't be completely unrealistic if one of the challengers made a huge run in the last two and half weeks and defeated him.

Personally, I'm a registered member of The Green Party and I'm voting a straight ticket as much as possible.

More often than not, the votes for those actually elected are wasted eventually by the polititian himself. I don't consider an honest 3rd party vote to be 'wasted'. Others disagree, sometimes vehemently.

"Just like in the Cold War" is a fitting opening line for that advertisment.

That wouldn't bother me so much if they weren't referring to the conservatives' version of the Cold War they all seem to believe in (the Soviet Union crumbled because President Reagan kept escalating the arms race), rather than what actually happened (Presidents Nixon and Reagan negotiated significant arms reductions, and the Soviet government collapsed under its own weight after reforms introduced by Gorbachev caused enough people to question the entire system).

I'm getting a great commercial on the gay-ban vote here in Wisco. The opposition to the ban have a redneck farmer say he 'doesnt understand gays, it wasnt how he was raised' but he thinks this law is going way too far.
