King of Colosseum 2

I just recently picked up King of Colosseum 2 for the PS2 and have been alternating between awe at how great this game is and anger at not only the crap most American Wrestling games are, but the fact that I didn't even hear of this game until 2 years after its release.

 

For those who don't know, KoC2 is a wrestling match simulator based on the King of Soul and Fire Pro engines. While not as graphically advanced as the Smackdown series, the gameplay, behavior editing and list of moves and movesets available is staggering.

Any thoughts about the game? Any unusual tag teams or great matches?

 

My personal favorite tag team right now is the tandem of Chris Benoit (WIld Pegasus) and Dynamite Kid. Very fast, powerful and dominant. Very much like the British Bulldogs, but without Davey Boy's occasional slowness and reluctance to hit hard.

KocII does seem head and shoulders above every other wrestling game. The grapple system is just a ton of fun and has a lot of variety to offer. The roster of wrestlers is quite relevant to my interests as well. The only issues I have with it are technical (terrible load times and bad framerates in tag matches, which can be fixed, but is still annoying). Still, KoCII is the sort of wrestling game that would totally work in the West, because the graphics are good, and the gameplay is quite a bit better than any of the WWE games. So as long as it had the WWE license, it would do quite well. Of course, I don't expect that to happen anytime soon.

 

There are a lot of options if you want some unusual matches, just because there's something like 100+ unlicensed wrestlers you can unlock with "templates". Basically you just load the templates in the edit mode, and you have a real wrestler. There are quite a few MMA guys in the game too. Want to stick Fedor in there with Kobashi? Giddyup.

alright, so I'm a gamecube WWE game player. How does this play compared to DOR2? That has to be THE game for me in terms of post-No Mercy gameplay.

 

Man.. I hope we get a similar engine on the Wii, speaking of.. but anyway, how does this play at all?

DOR uses the same sort of engine as No Mercy didn't it? Which would be like the VPW2 engine. If that's the case, it's somewhat the same as KOCII. You press a button to go for grapples, and strikes block that. Except in KOCII, when you start a grapple, you have to input a move command once the grapple reaches a certain part. For example, one grapple might be to grab and twist an arm around into an arm bar, and then once that animation is done, you push another button to use a move. Most wrestlers have 3-5 grapples each, from the front and from the back. Then 3-5 moves per grapple.

What really puts this game head and shoulders above the rest for me is the versatility. Even though the gimmick match offerings are sparse, the engine enables you to wrestle ANY type of non-gimmick match. Lucharesu? check. MMA? check. Hybrid? American? Stong-Style? ROH? checkity-check check.

 

Want to put Hulk Hogan in a Vale Tudo match with Mike Tyson? Do it, and watch Tyson proceed to fuck Hogan till the Hulkster screams "I love you!"

 

Care to see Finlay, Regal, Danielson and Samoa Joe in a 4-way for a title? Hit the edit mode, make the guys and have at it.

 

This game has actually awakened my interest in wrestling and caused me to hit Highspots and Goldenboy up for about 100 bucks worth of tapes to see some of these guys in action.

 

In contrast, Smackdown has given me years of disappointment.

Does it take several millenia to create a custom wrestler, like in the Smackdown games?

I finally got to play this game yesterday.

 

Definitely one of the BEST wrestling games I ever played. It has a VAST roster, with so many unlockables. I saw a full list of the wrestlers in the game, and it has everyone that matters. So many great matchups can happen. How about Stan Hansen fighting Ric Flair? Kobashi going up against Chris Benoit? The MMA matches are awesome, and the engine is great. Just like Fire Pro, some of the wrestlers in the game have their music or something close to it. Like Low Ki's music in the game sounds ALOT like his real theme, but Jyushin Liger has his ACTUAL music in the game.

 

Also, the little touches they did for the presentation, like full ring announced entrances, and even streamers for the big time matches. It's an awesome game indeed.

 

There is another game for Gamecube I believe....Wrestle Kingdom. It looks and plays JUST like DOR.

Do I need to MOD out my ps2 to play this, or can I just go and pick it up at any store?

You have to mod it. I recommend just getting a fliptop case thinger.

Flip Tops are mucho easy to set up. I have no real practical experience with modding and was able to put on the flip top in about 20 minutes. Instructions are all over and most instructions come with pictures, just google it.
