Second Life

Recommended Posts

Just curious, I read an article on the online sim game, Second Life, and was wondering if anyone here plays it. My computers are too slow, and out-dated to run it, but it seems interesting.

Oh wow. I haven't heard of it, but after googling it, I have to say it looks interesting. This is something I always predicted the net would evolve into from my days fucking around on MOOs and MUDs. Interestingly enough, I didn't think it'd take off in text like it ended up doing (via Myspace and similar social networking sites), but in more advanced forms of VRML like this thing.

I haven't tried it yet, but I'll check it out eventually, I suppose. It seems a bit pointless to become "successful" in a fake world, though.

Apparently, you can make some decent "real" money in this game by way of making skins/items to sell and/or selling "land". Anything you create you keep ownership of.

There were a couple articles recently about this game. In 1, some dude sued the makers of the game because they "seized" some of his virtual land, which he was planning to sell. The other article just talked about some people who use the game as their sole source of real world income.

I played it for about a month and got bored. There's some really interesting stuff to do, and a handful of very entertaining games to play, completely designed and programmed by members; at least one (Tringo) is set for a non-Second Life release.

My biggest problem (and the reason I quit playing) was it was SO SLOW. Just like in real life, everyone wants to have some catchy artwork and some snazzy backgrounds, and everything has to look cool...but unlike real life, Second Life has to deal with loading times. I had to turn down the settings to near-bare-minimum to get a "good" speed where I wasn't seeing gray boxes everywhere, and I'm on a relatively fast DSL connection. Maybe someone with cable wouldn't find it to be too bad, but I just got tired of going to somebody's area, then leaving for 5 minutes to wait for the entire landscape to load.
