If McGwire doesn't get in because of steroids, it's BS.

It can't be proven he did them, (which is baseball's own damn fault) and LaRussa blatantly stated that Canseco's charges were bullshit.

I like McGwire, but if anything, his stats are borderline. lots of home runs. Bad BA. Won a golden glove or two.

He's 10th all-time in slugging %, 11th all-time in adjusted OPS. He has a .394 OBP. Those aren't borderline.

And he broke the long time HR record, and had a big role in reviving baseball's popularity. There's no question McGwire should be in based on his playing career.

Vote him in or not, but the overreactions from people about him are silly. There's reasons why the guy is a recluse now.

The Veterans Committee picks (if any) come out next month. I'm reviewing the candidates in my blog in a three part series.

I remember after the Veterans Committee did not elect anyone in '05 a guy in one of my classes kept trying to tell me that "Dude Ryne Sandberg didn't into the hall of fame like you said he did!" because, of course, the Veteran's Committee not elect anyone that means that no one got elected. He was absolutely convinced of this for days.

(Mentioning Sandberg and not Boggs was because I went to the Highschool that Sandberg did)

Well, come on. You've even said he deserves to be there. It's ridiculous that he hasn't gotten in, and it's just plain wrong to accuse him of shamelessly milking his diabetes to get in (sup, South Siders).

I don't know much about the '80 Phils, but the '93 team was pretty cool. Good old scum-of-the-earth ballplayers.

I'm referring to Mike Schmidt's reported refusal to vote for any candidates. Besides Schmidt, that team had Pete Rose, Larry Bowa, etc. Maybe I'm overstating things but they just weren't a likeable bunch. As for Santo, he's the one player on the ballot who I'd not only vote for, but deserves the honor beyond the shadow of a doubt.

It's a bit odd that I got both reactions for McGwire. Not what I expected.

He was my favorite player as a very young'un. I think he should be inducted/rejected on his playing, and that's it.

I mean, I could put up a good case:

As a lanky dude, he absolutely shattered the rookie HR record.

He was the first to hit 30 HRs in his first 3 seasons.

He always was a class act, gave back money to the A's after his phenomanaly shitty 5th season.

Blah blah blah.

He probably did roids. Going back to his original stance helped him more than that. And if MLB didn't test for roids, it's their own damn fault.

Can you boot someone just because he maybe 'roided? Why? MLB should have tested a long time ago. Are we to just wipe out 15 years of baseball? Maybe Griffey did roids. I really, really, don't think he did, but he was in the "roids era". Should we ignore all the great Braves pitchers? Coulda been doing roids. Maybe we should have an WHIP adjusted to roids?

And I did think Mattingly would have scored more. That guy was killer.
