bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2007 SNL Review- Forest Whitaker/Keith Urban Sports Report- Nets- They’ve had a very hot and cold season. Now they’re on a winning streak, but I assume next week they’ll have 9 hard-luck losses. Leafs- They’ve been winning recently, but still seem stuck in that 9th slot as every other team seems to keep winning too. Canucks- I plan on building shrines in Roberto Luongo’s honour. Well after I finish my Trevor Linden shrine first. I think this team has a shot to go far in the Stanley Cup Finals, they’re a very scary team. Mailbag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!- Chad Ruffner writes- Although I only caught the first hour and a half of the show due to leaving for work, it didn't look like I really missed all that much when I read the recaps.(Other than The Tag Team Title change, but the Tag Titles are basically meaningless anyways.) This was a really slow and boring show. Definitely not what you want The Raw after your second biggest PPV of the year to be. Programs like these are why I'm glad I watch TNA Impact on Thursdays. I know W.M. is still 2 months away, but they are going to have their work cut out for them if this is the best they can do. Thankfully I remembered to tape "24". Thumbs Down. What Did You Think? Chad I think it’s a bit unfair to judge a RAW if you miss the most important part of the show. I thought it was a good show, and I really liked the RKO-Cena/HBK match. And I like that they’re building to WM early. [email protected] writes- Hey Bob- I’m sure you already know that the main events at Wrestlemania this year are Cena v. HBK and Big Dave v. Taker. This is the first time in Mania history that the world title matches will be face-face. Given that, how do you think Cena v. HBK and Big Dave v. Taker will play out? Which match do you think will be the final match of the show? In both matches, who do you think will play the heel role? In both matches, which worker do you think will receive the biggest pops and the largest heat? Personally, I think Big Dave v. Taker will suck, and Cena-HBK will be okay at least- depending how well Cena can work with HBK. Of course, Cena v. HBK will be the last match in the show, since RAW > SD! Big Dave could play the heel role in his match with Taker, since he sucks in the ring now. I don’t think Cena is capable of being heel-ish. Taker will be insanely over with the Detroit crowd- no question. And since Detroit is big hip-hop city, the crowd may see Cena as a poser. In reality, the crowd will be 50-50 during Cena-HBK (like last year during Cena-HHH), with the teenyboppers pulling for Cena and everyone else for HBK. What do you think? Later- Ken I think Cena v. HBK is going to be a great match. If they keep Big Dave-Taker short and disguise their limitations it should be fine. I think the crowd will be more pro-HBK but it won’t be as bad as last year. No one’s gonna be against Taker I don’t think. I think Taker v. Batista will go on last. Wanna be in the mailbag???? Email me at [email protected] Cold Opening Cast- Darrell Hammond, Kristin Wiig Thoughts- Apparently a skit about that astronaut was the cold but it bombed so we get old reliable. This was a great cold opening, with lots of good lines. Didn’t know about the Blitzer thing, but it seems like poor Dick Cheney is always having a contentious interview with someone. Loved the letters from the soldiers in Iraq and the letter from the guy Cheney shot in the face. They hadn’t done Cheney in a while, so it wasn’t too stale, and this was very well written. **** Monologue Cast- Forest Whitaker, Maya Rudolph Thoughts- When I saw Last King of Scotland, I thought Idi Amin had something wrong with his eye, I didn’t realize it was poor Forest Whitaker’s condition. When I saw Maya, I knew we were getting some good ole monologue singing. I think it was intentional, but Maya butchering People Get Ready…not cool. I did like their duet on Get Ready, and I did not know that not only does Forest Whitaker have an eye problem, he can sing too! **1/4 Bronx Beat Cast- Whitaker, Amy Poehler, Rudolph, Wiig Thoughts- They JUST DID THIS. Seriously, it was just two shows ago! They can’t think of anything else? I did laugh at the ending where Kristin seemed sad that Whitaker was not in love with her. No need to immediately re-air a crap skit. * SNL Digital Short Cast- Will Forte, Andy Samberg Thoughts- I was all set to punch Andy in the face again until Will showed up. I give them credit for having a good payoff with Will, so yay I was at the Justin Timberlake show and at the end of the concert, Andy came out and they did Cock in a Box. It was amazing. *** Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me Cast- Whitaker, Poehler, Forte, Hader, Fred Armisen, Rudolph Thoughts- This reminded me of the Looney Tunes cartoon where Bugs pisses off the composer and they battle until Bugs makes him sing the high note until he collapses the whole building and the rock hits him in the end. This started out pretty funny, and I loved when Bill wanted to hit him in the nuts. I thought the tacked on ten minutes later thing and Forest being able to sing an out of this world pitch was overkill and really damaged the skit. Forest Whitaker really likes to sing. He should’ve been on Celebrity Duets. That would’ve been awesome. **1/4 Urigrow Cast- Jason Sudeikis, Wiig Thoughts- Sudeikis washing the dog while talking about urinating got me. I also kind of laughed at him taking the large piss at the end. Yes, I know I should turn in my comedy reviewing badge. *** Man v. Beast Cast- Whitaker, Poehler, Sudeikis, Rudolph Thoughts- Forest Whitaker does a really good Greg Gumbel impression. This was written by Jim Downey, and he did a very good job. Loved the references to the NCAA tournament with the Cinderella Hamster. I thought the black barring the fight was lame, but I loved the post-fight interview with Sudeikis. Blood is always a plus on SNL. ***3/4 Keith Urban Thoughts- I was all set to mock Keith Urban and make jokes about his coke habit and marriage to Nicole Kidman, but I actually liked him. I don’t really think I could consider him country though, this seems more like pop country to me. Anyway, this was good. Not even the retarded drummer could ruin it. *** Weekend Update Cast- Seth Meyers, Poehler, Hammond, Kenan Thompson, Sudeikis Thoughts- Seth and Amy are really clicking now, and Weekend Update is officially very fun to watch again. I’m just glad I can look forward to Update again, instead of cringing when 12:15 hit around. Since Update is better again, I wonder why Lorne doesn’t go back to having Update then the musical guest. I understand burying Update during the Fey-Poehler era, because it sucked, but now that it’s good again, showcase it and put it so it starts around 12:10 and not 12:20. The jokes this week were awesome, especially Seth’s hugging joke, the Bears joke, the Ted Haggard joke and some other Seth jokes that I loved. Amy had a few clunkers but was very good throughout. Loved the Jesse and Sharpton commentary, those guys always bring the goods, the black-o-metre being no exception. Sudeikis as a pervy astronaut was hilarious, and it allowed for some Seth-Amy interaction. Great Update, everything clicked from top to bottom. ****1/4 Whitney Houston Cast- Whitaker, Rudolph, Thompson Thoughts- During this skit, the clock hit 12:30 and I knew we were doomed. Bronx Beat had no singing, but this makes two skits for Maya tonight that involve vocalizing, plus the monologue. I laughed at Whitaker playing Bobby Brown’s uncle but the rest was pure Maya drek. * Am I A Crazy Street Person? Cast- Whitaker, Sudeikis, Wiig, Armisen, Forte, Thompson Thoughts- When you need someone to play crazy, just ask Forest Whitaker. This was okay at the beginning, but I felt they didn’t push the concept hard enough. To really show how crazy Forest’s character was, they should’ve brought out a regular person and he would think they were a crazy street person. Kristin’s line at the end about suing was funny. **1/4 Keith Urban Thoughts- Seriously Keith Urban, why did you have to go and be good and ruin my desire to mock you? Freaking Kiwi cokehead. Nicole Kidman still sucks though. ***1/4 Staten Island Zoo Cast- Wiig, sloths Thoughts- Well this came out of nowhere. And it was awesome. All the bleeping and everything was great. It reminded me of something Tenacious D would do. Kristin Wiig’s face and line at the end killed me. I think this was orginially supposed to be a Digital Short, so kudos to the Lonely Island guys for the best last skit of the season. So many great things to quote, I think YouTube has its next semi-phenomenon. **** The Bottom Line- The avg. skit was **.87 making this a thumbs up show. I was a bit disappointed that Forest Whitaker didn’t do anything, but this show had three **** segments so I will not complain. It looks like January was just a brief speedbump, as this season continues its consistent good run. This show showed that the cast is really starting to come together and the writing is improving, and that Forest Whitaker really likes to sing. One of the better shows of the season and this show easily surpassed my expectations. The next show should rock. Thumbs Up
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2007 I was so so on this one, but I dig Whitaker, so I gave it a pass.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2007 I loved Forest Whitaker in Last King of Scotland, but the guy really only had a starring role in one-two skits. It wasn't b/c he sucked in rehearsals or anything, but I think a lot of shit got cut
Chazz 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2007 How do you know who wrote what skits?
