I saw a ton of people with the ash yesterday. Goofy little ritual. I thought it was cool when I was 8, but I was 8.

 

Fun sidestory:

 

I went to the Mardi Gras celebration down in New Orleans a few years ago, and walked around the city the day after. I came across a gentleman with a smudge on his forehead. He looked horribly hung over and otherwise dirty, so I started to say "Hey buddy, you have some shit smudged on your forehead," but stopped halfway through "buddy" when the other half of my brain said to the first half, "Oh wait; Catholics."

Your beliefs are just as valid as anyone else's on religion Czech. It doesnt make Boon wrong if you don't agree with him. There's validity to every religious belief to some degree, since religion, is, simply, a series of beliefs.

With all the boorishness, depravity, and general awful things that we say, show, and do every day, I'm crossing the line here by saying that denying yourself some trivial item or action for six weeks lest you be forced to atone by saying an arbitrary number of prayers while clutching magic beads is pretty damn stupid to an unaffiliated onlooker? For the record, I am not offended by Czech's remarks. He's just one in a long line of people that have questioned Catholic rituals that I myself have called into question from time to time. I think it's fair game to question people's religion, especially if they make it public knowledge as I did.

 

I don't go to church anymore since I was confirmed. I choose not to participate in the institution of the church, but that doesn't mean that I don't follow the faith. I don't participate in Lent because I am afraid I'll have to atone for my sins if I don't give up chocolate. I participate because my faith is important to me, and it's a small reminder of the greater concept of sacrifice, something I hold as important in my own personal life.

 

I guess we can call Republicans "ignorant toadies" all we want, but implying that Catholics only buy this bullshit because they've grown up in it is wrong, wrong, wrong.

It's a problem when anybody implies they know anything about why a person believes a certain way, unless they know that individual on a personal level.

there are serious things wrong with the denomination. to say otherwise is flat out silly. so im with czech on that one. but to lambast all religion is sorta silly, too. even if you believe it. its just one of those things that really should be kept to one's self as it is pretty much the one sacred thing is a lot of people's lives that really shouldn't be questioned by others.

I haven't lambasted all religion. I only really have objections and reservations about Catholicism, Mormonism, and evangelical Christianity. I like my religion to be a personal affair, and those approaches seem to be just too big, and seem to really hurt a disproportionately high number of their believers, and in the case of the evangelicals, they're even starting to encroach upon and harm people outside the faith. Like I said, we know about the lapsed Catholics, or the Mormon apostates, but the reports of severely affected Episcopalians are pretty low.

Is that a reference I'm not catching? American arm of the Anglican Church, in a sense, but I think it tends to be further removed from Catholicism than the Church of England itself. The one in my town was more Protestant, from what I've gleaned.

This drive me bananas. When I was young, I always assumed it was symbolic. It HAD to be, I thought. I mean, I know what a cracker tastes like, and while I don't know what human flesh tastes like, I bet it doesn't taste like a cracker. I can't fathom how people could take Jesus so *literally* when he said "This is my body, which is given up for you." I mean, Jesus spoke in parables and told stories all the freaking time, didn't he? Also, if I'm not mistaken, he never said "I have actually transformed this bread into my flesh, which is why it's started bleeding", but he did say to do it in rememberance of him.

 

So how the fuck did it get taken so literally? He wanted to be remembered by it; I don't think he wanted people beliving that what looks like wine and tastes like wine and IS wine is somehow the blood of someone who died 2000 years ago. Why would he even want us to drink his blood? That doesn't even make sense.

 

Transubstantiation is one of my big issues with the religon, as you may have guessed.

My friend Mike's parents had the Pope and this picture of Jesus that was one of those pictures that was actually made up of a bunch of little pictures. This picture of Jesus was a closeup of his face after the Resurrection made up of little pictures of him bloody on the cross. I once counted about 85 crucifixes in their house. Catholics love crucifixes.

It used to much more stricter. Up until 1965 Catholics could only eat meat on Sunday's during lent. Pregnant women being an exception. Before that Catholics couldn't eat meat on Friday's the entire year.
