ECW RATING RISES BIG TIME, WSX RISES AS WELL

by Dave Scherer @ 6:53:00 PM on 2/28/2007

This week's edition of ECW on Sci Fi did a 1.6 cable rating, with a 3 share. That is way up from last week's 1.3. It does my heart good to report this because I am always happy when a good show gets rewarded with a good rating.

The show did quarter hours of 1.5, 1.6, 1.6, 1.6 and a strong 2.1 for the overrun.

Wrestling Society X did a 0.6 cable rating, with a 1 share. That is up from the 0.5 that they did for their last original episode two weeks ago.

Umaga's presence made sense but his actions were goofy. I assumed he would scale the cage and interfere in the match to cost Lashley the belt. But instead he just sorta tore stuff up at ringside like a tool, and Lashley squashed Holly anyway. He should have come out a couple minutes later when it was apparent Lashley was dominating. He ended up standing around for far too long before the awesome spot.

I was wondering why Vince just didn't have the ref open the door to let Umaga in so Holly and Umaga could just double team Lashley until the 5 minutes were up. Lashley didn't have to loose by pinfall or anything, just have him loose by the 5 minute gimmick but make him look strong during the end of it, so it still puts him over a bit.

I still think the idea was for distraction and to put over that Umaga is a savage that doesn't actually know logic like getting into the cage. It isn't a big deal. It was all a set up to make Lashley look incredibly dominant making Holly look like Virgil and for the highlight package spot.

I was fine with it, just as long as they don't try to present Holly as a serious main event threat anymore. I mean, the way he was squashed could be considered borderline burial, though he will probably beat someone like Sandman or Balls next week to make up for it.

ECW is actually getting better. Too bad they'll never have all extreme rules matches....as much as I hate to admit it, they need the occasional DQ. WWE logic and all. Then again, if Heyman had complete control, he wouldn't need to use DQs in feuds or anything like that.

Still though, an extreme rules match every week with a lot of weapons would satisfy me.

Also, say what you will about Lashley, but he works his ass off. Lashley is this year's new John Cena, apparantly. He'd get heat if he turned heel and got a manager. Although against Umaga, he might be able to get over as a face. I can see why they'd put Lashley in that match.....to get ECW and Lashley over.

I actually think you make a great comparison. Cena, while to me not entertaining/good in regular wrestling matches, excels at gimmick matches (see his last man standing matches with Umaga, JBL, even TLC with Edge). Lashley can be good in gimmick matches, such as that cage match, which hide his deficiences. Problem is, as opposed to Cena, Lashley (and of course Batista) is awful/crowd killer on the mic.

The show has definitely approved since Heyman's dismissal. Either Heyman was burned out creatively or we weren't truely getting Heyman's booking but rather Paul trying to write shows that Vince wouldn't rip down piece by piece. If they are really serious about paying Heyman just so he doesn't move on to TNA - they should just use him in an advisor/consultant role to the ECW writers. Let him suggest things to Lagana and Dusty without actually being on the road, dealing with Vince and Stephanie and having the stress of being in charge of ECW creative. This way he would still have a voice in his creation, accepts that he's no longer the defining voice - that belongs to Vince and WWE Creative now - and he can be free to work on the projects outside of wrestling that he wants to work. Let's put it this way. It was his idea to push CM Punk as a centerpiece. It was his push that moved Lashley from Smackdown to ECW and his decision to put the belt on him when everyone feared he was too green - but look now - where would Vince vs. Trump at this year's Wrestlemania be without Lashley in the spot he's in? Heyman had good ideas but couldn't work in WWE's creative environment. So don't make him but get something out of him.
