AFL

Recommended Posts

So, today at 11:30cst, we get to see the ESPN branded AFL start up on ABC.

With ESPN putting their programming weight behind the AFL, I think this is finally the year the league can really take off and get more recognition for the type of game it is. Why? Well, ESPN is behind it and American's tend to not really care about most sports unless ESPN is either covering it or pushing it as a big thing for people to care about. I know it might not be the best example, but look at hockey. When it was shown on ESPN, people cared a bit more.. people went out of their way to catch a game. Now? Hardly anyone knows when their team is playing or where they can catch the game? (Versus? Seriously.. if you don't have digital cable.. you ain't seein the NHL..) I think with ESPN getting behind the AFL the lay sports fan will be a bit more apt to follow the sport and maybe pick a team or two to root for. So, enough of my rambling...

The first time I saw it, I thought arena football was totally ridiculous, but after going to a couple of the local AF2 team's games, I found it pretty fun. Still not sure how well it will translate to TV.

I've been following Arena Football for quite some time actually. I started out an Arizona Rattlers fan, then when L.A. got a team (the Avengers) I followed them. I haven't been following it that closely in recent years though, but it's good to see this is something that could be big while the NFL is out of season (the biggest reason this league is successful.. and it's a hell of a lot more watchable than NFL Europe)

I didn't even know this was happening until today. I turned on ABC to watch the Suns/Lakers game, and I see the freaking Kansas City Brigade on national tv. I had never heard that team mentioned outside of the occasional local promo. If I remember, I'll try to catch more of these games in the future.
