Risk of Blood Diseases

Recommended Posts

Guest gfanikf

I've always wondered with all the blading and such that goes on in wrestling how has it been that NO ONE seemed to get any blood borne diseases with wrestling in a blood soaked ring. I mean I can't imagine all the promotions tested for these things (heck look at the recent Cowboy Bob nearly gives the Taker a gift incident). I'm just shocked that something never happened. This isn't like say the fear of getting HIV in the NBA when Magic first announced he had HIV, I don't recall MJ blading to much lol.

It's not as easy to catch a blood-borne disease as some might think.

And given that blading is done when the perfomer is sweating a lot, the actual blood quickly becomes diluted. And there's little chance for blood to transfer from one person internally to another.

But, as said above, it's mainly because transfer is not as easy (unless in the case of an actual blood transfusion) as some might think.

I'm surprised the refs don't wear the latex gloves to make things seem more legit. I'm wanting to say some wrestlers got sick from a nasty ring in one of the territories a while back, maybe Portland?

Boxing refs usually wear gloves. It's a pretty big risk, but these guys are probably blood tested out the ass, so it's not a big worry.

Indy promotions are the ones where the risk of blood disease probably goes way up.

Though, to be fair, boxing refs have to actually inspect cuts closely with their hands. And it is a very common thing to happen during boxing.

Are wrestling referees even trained first-aiders? The actual people they have to deal with injuries clearly do wear gloves, though.

Dunno, good question. But if they aren't, it would quickly change when someone stopped breathing in the ring and the ref couldn't do anything to help them.

Umm maybe I can answer some questions. I'm a Ref for Pro Wrestling.

I'm wanting to say some wrestlers got sick from a nasty ring in one of the territories a while back, maybe Portland?
man, I sorta wish you didn't say that, I just Ref'ed a New Jack match near Portland on Friday...blood fucking everywhere.

I always found it odd that UFC refs would wear gloves in the in the ring and WWE refs don't.

I'm surprised the refs don't wear the latex gloves to make things seem more legit.

Here's sorta the thing, in UFC and whatever else that may be a shoot fight, someone bleeding pretty much happens in every match and its unpredictable when someone is going to bleed or not bleed and normally the UFC ref's are right next to the fight, keeping an eye on it or they also check the wound by touching it to make sure that fighter can still go, thats why I think they wear the gloves all the time

As far as WWE/Wrestling Ref's go, Ref's really know when someone is going to bleed on purpose or not. Unless its hardway, and hardway bleeding is un-predictable. Now when I did New Jack's match on Friday, I knew there was going to be blood....its a fucking New Jack match, I would be shocked if there wasn't going to be blood. Now I didn't wear gloves and thats just because, if all of a sudden I went out there wearing latex gloves and the crowd saw me with the gloves, their going to sorta wondering why I'm wearing the gloves and might think someone is going to bleed during the match and thats why I'm wearing them. Now if the crowd starts thinking someone is going to bleed and someone DOESN'T bleed during the match, then the crowd might get let down...or they may start thinking since I'm wearing the gloves, they might automatically think, someone is going to start bleeding during the match. Which may or may not hurt the match, depending on how you look at it.

Plus after the match is over and if I have blood on my hands or face, I get my ass to a near by sink, and wash the hell out of my hands and face to make sure I have no blood on me and when I get back to the hotel room, I take a shower as a double check kind of thing.

Are wrestling referees even trained first-aiders?

I'm not, but that doesn't mean that there aren'r other Ref's who are. It really just depends on the person. Though its a good idea and maybe I should take a class on that. I'm more worried when paramedics aren't paid to be at the show just in case something goes wrong and I'm in the middle of the ring with someone whose having some sort of health issue and its up to me to take care of them for a little while until we can get some professional help but I really pray that never ever happens to me or anyone else.

Can I answer any more questions or clear anything else up?

Yes Scroby I have a question, do you guys ever get brain damage from being knocked out for so long in matches?

:)

You had to ref a New Jack match? How did you sleep beforehand?

Another reason MMA refs wear gloves as opposed to pro wrestling is that they are held to higher scrutiny and more regulation by state athletic commissions because they are legit sports, which also is why the E uses the sports entertainment moniker as a way to circumvent some of the regulations.

1. I've only been knocked out by a chair once, so no brain damage there.

2. Well I found out about the New Jack match about 20 minutes before it was going to take place. There's nothing like the other Ref coming up to you and going "Oh hey, your going to Ref New Jack's match."

Blood diseases are one thing, but staph infections from dirty rings and locker rooms are an obvious concern and I'm surprised it doesn't come up more often.

It does, thats why a ring is cleaned before a show, and if there's blood or its all slippery or something that happens during the show the ring is cleaned again, and the ring is cleaned again before it's taken down by the end of the night. Locker rooms aren't all that bad, I mean its not like people are going back there bleeding all over everyone and doing other nasty things to other people in the locker room....unless Lita is there.
