Grand Theft Auto IV

Its a while before the game picks up to me honestly.

The game picks up on the level where dimitri tires to kill you and you and Jacob have the shootout with everyone in the warehouse.

I was completely unimpressed before that. But when it picked up, it REALLY picked up and I really enjoyed it.

If you are playing just the story, it shouldn't take more than a hour/hour and a half. If you are takign people on outings, going to side missions and such, then longer.

So, uh, this gets better, right? I've played for about an hour, done the first mission or two, and gone on a bowling date.

The previous GTAs had all these tutorial/intro missions too, but they were actually fun. This is pretty lame so far. Maybe I need to just find my way downtown and fuck some shit up.

EDIT: You've got to be kidding me. The game takes place in New York and I can't go to Manhattan yet? That's 18 levels of stupid.

That's how every GTA game has worked. You have to progress to open up more areas.

I think it's been handled much better in the past games, which were less about a given environment. Part of the huge appeal of this game as a next-gen property is the ability to have free reign over a pretty strong replication of New York City, and that primarily means Manhattan. All I wanted to do yesterday was head into Times Square and get into a huge firefight, but instead I'm doing endless escort missions in poorly lit and drably-colored Brooklyn. Yeah, there's supposed to be a progression, and GTA4's supposed to be more "realistic" than its predecessors, but the opening areas of Vice City and San Andreas were much, much more appealing than this.

Playing these early parts of the game feels like a bit of a chore. Perhaps I'm spoiled on BioShock, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, etc., which had their opening movements but still managed to get you into the core of the game's appeal right off the bat.

Haha.

It definately does pick up.

I really enjoyed the game half way through and onwards. Slow start i'll grant you.

I'm in love with the online gaming at the moment though.

Are some idiots playing.

You're a murderer immigrant who just hopped off the boat. (And who's quite poor) Chances are you aren't gonna have an apartment in Manhattan immediately.

And really, if your whole goal was to just get into Manhattan doing a firefight. Then do so. An immediate 6 stars should prove a pretty interesting firefight.

But if it's really that important to you, if possible, just go online, and play around in free mode. Every area of the game open from the start, and you get to use your own 'created' character model.

I admittingly haven't haven't played it nearly as much as I thought I was going to(time issues, slow methodical borderline bland start to the game, among other reasons), but yesterday I was at my brother-in-law's apartment and his roomate was playing it and there was this kick-ass mission where it started in some warehouse on the beach and you walk up having to snipe some guys, then take out a bunch of guys in the warehouse, then chase the guy on a dirtbike (while he is escaping in a boat) and then you have to go off a jump and into a helicopter.......This might be the same mission Ripper was eluding to earlier in this thread but I am not sure....

How far into the game is this, and do missions start looking like this more regularly, I mean damn that looked a lot cooler then ANYTHING I have done thus far......

There are plenty of awesome missions though. I think THree Leaf Clover is amazing, if not for that long drive you have to make if you get killed. Also I loved that mission where you had to save roman and you got to hear Niko with his angry voice.

All the big missions in the second half of the game is awesome if you ask me.

It just gets off to a very slow start.

But I have to say, I don't want to even think about the words that were used when I had to jump that fucking bike onto that fucking helicoptor. Trailing that dude with the dirt bike was one of the more frustraiting things about the game to me. Its like they knew that the bikes handling sucked so they made this necessary for you to finish the game. I do wonder how the other ending goes though. I might play through the entire thing again, just for kicks.

I'm playing the game through again Ripper, and i'm going to take the other ending too. I echo your sentiments in regard to the bike.. I walked that missed all the way through to the chase, and I just couldn't get the right angle for the jump.

I just can't do it. Every time I am about to go on a piegon hunt, I get bored and just stop.

I get board at 3.

I was diong it the other day and got 1-10 and then just said fuck it.

Plus there is the annoying fact that I shot some during the missions when I saw them so I don't know which ones are gone, so I ended up taking cabs to the spot and couldn't find the damn thing only to realize I already shot the fucking thing.

How far into the game is this

Very last level.

So with that said. How many hours(average) is the story mode alone?

At least 25-30. I did a lot of side stuff, and was at 40 hours before my 360 took a shit. If you take a taxi to the mission points, it's a whole lot less, but you miss out on the randoms and stuff. Love running into the randoms.

I hit most of the randoms even with taking the taxis most of the time.

I still drove around like after missions and such and would see their icon. The Randoms are freakin awesome in this game too.

So according to the walkthrough I am just about exactly 50% through the storyline mode. I have noticed that the last few missions have started getting longer though and more fun. The next two missions I have to do are the one where you follow the helicopter across town and then get in it(I failed it the first time cause I didn't notice where the chopper landed, and climbed a building unecessarily and then watched the chopper take off from the helipad...lol) and then Part 2 of the job interview mission.

I'm told there's a way to kill the guy without alerting the authorities and you can just make a break for it. Whether it was bare hands or the knife, I don't remember, because I used a baseball bat and got caught.

I on the other hand wanted as much violence as possible and shot him in the face and killed every security guard and cop on the way out.

I also shot that black chick from the dating website, "Jeni-fun" or whatever when I saw her running around because she turned me down for a date.

So has anyone got the call for the interview, but didn't go initially and had to have it rescheduled for the next day cause you were in the middle of doing something else and missed it?

Well that is the situation I am in but I can't remember where the building is. I got the message "So and so has rescheduled your interview for tomorrow at 8am) I am HOPING that when it gets close to that time, maybe an icon on the map will start blinking. Is this mission even necessary to the story mode cause right now besides this mission, I have the two McCravey brothers missions and Ray's missions to do so I really have PLENTY to fill the time until I get to the interview mission
