Preview: RVD: Not cleared to compete

May 29, 2007

Rob Van Dam & CM Punk were scheduled to face Elijah Burke & Marcus Cor Von in a rematch from the last ECW on Sci Fi in a No Disqualification Match. After suffering a concussion at the hands of Randy Orton, however, RVD will not be able to compete. CM Punk and Elijah Burke will square off one-on-one in a No Disqualification Match while RVD must wait and recover. Will Punk be able to get revenge on Burke from last week without the help of his tag team partner?

New Breed Superstar Matt Striker had a better night last week than he had in the last few weeks with a solid win over Brett Major. Can he build off of this victory this week on ECW on Sci Fi?

Last week, Snitsky continued his ravenous path of destruction, making Tommy Dreamer his latest victim, but RVD slowed down the deranged freak with a chair shot. Will Snitsky seek vengeance on the only person who has gotten the better of him in the last few months?

Finally, Bobby Lashley and Mr. McMahon will discuss their One Night Stand Street Fight. What is each man doing to prepare for Sunday? Will Lashley be ready to bounce back after getting pinned by Shane McMahon in a 3-on-2 Handicap Match on Raw? What else could the Chairman have up his sleeve?

Find out the answers to all of these questions and more on ECW on Sci Fi on Tuesday at 10/9 CT.

Also on WWE.com, Randy Orton says he's coming to ECW tonight to finish the job.

Burke vs Punk no DQ could be a fun match to watch. So I don't get it...RVD can't wrestle but he's going to be there anyways?

I guess we're to assume he was already at the building and then the doctor checked him out. Oh joy, more crap with Concussions by Randy. I have to admit I have no idea how they are going to write RVD out of the storylines considering he has standing issues with Snitsky on ECW, the New Breed on ECW, and now Orton from Raw. Anyone else find it odd that a guy who is supposed to be getting buried and finishing his contract is involved with so many storylines?

Snitsky attacks him in the locker room, drags RVD to the ring, Orton runs out and RKO's him?

According to something I was reading eerlier there is apparently a note in the observer this week that says RVD has no interest in working for TNA...

It says that he feels he has enough money to retire if he chooses to and he is also open to working a lighter schedule for the WWE.........so maybe they don't want to bury him seeing as according to this he's still open to working with them and not TNA.

Or RVD is smart enough to realize that if it was known that he was heading to TNA that he would have been buried. By letting it be known that he has no interest in TNA and was open to returning to the WWE, he won't be buried.

Remember Angle wasn't heading to TNA until they announced it. He could be using Sabu and his wife as a go-between, keeping it on the super downlow.

Of course the difference is.......the WWE didn't want Angle back at that time unless he got the help he doesn't want.......

The WWE would like to have RVD around........he has 0 reason to burn that bridge where Angle pretty much was never going back because he wasn't going to admit he had a problem.

RVD will wrestle somewhere again, or maybe just stay low and run that comic book store or be in more episodes of City Guys.

If they wanted to keep RVD around, they wouldn't have taken a dump all over the old ECW. That and the pot smoking charge just made it the be all end all of his tenure.

I'd like to think that not even RVD is stupid enough to believe he's better off in TNA. He can accomplish the light schedule with his own deals and won't need to put up with the dumbest people in the business today.

This show tonight was bizarre. The Lashley/Vince interview was curious stuff in that Lashley seemed to think Vince was a total joke and no sold the entire match at the PPV. Combine it with the odd Major Bros. backstage bit and of course the entire main angle of the show (Orton/RVD/Dreamer) and it was just beyond description.

If this concussion angle is designed to bury RVD in some way...I don't see it. If anything it's going to cause him to get more sympathy heat and when he's gone for good it'll mostly seem like he is off healing up and will be back to kick Orton's ass any day now. I'll admit that this is truly a Wrestlecrap worthy angle though for a variety of reasons:

1. Nobody believes Michaels or RVD are hurt from concussions.

2. It trivializes what is a serious injury that can actually end careers.

3. Orton is entirely the wrong guy to do an angle like this. He's nowhere near the physical threat it would require. Vader circa 1993? I can believe he'd destroy guys and deal out concussions. Orton? Ha.

Hey anyone remember Randys multiple concussion storyline they did in early 05 after the Rumble match with HHH? ok I doubt many do. However RVD did a great "confuse and out of look" on his face yet again At lkeats it looked somewhat real.

anyhow the highlight of this week was the fan who had the sign that said "Another Headlock Randy?" and held it up every time Orton put on a headlock.

I certainly remember the Orton concussion angle in 2005. What I found odd about it was that the announcers were trying to play it as some evil deed that HHH did, but the match itself didn't quite tell that story. As in Orton just hit his head on the floor and maybe seemed somewhat dazed, but otherwise you wouldn't notice the difference in the arena. So it just looked like HHH was squashing him.

People laugh at RVD and HBK for doing these absurd oversells of the concussion, but it has to be done to convey the angle to the fans in the arena and at home. The Orton/HHH match and angle was more realistic but it's difficult to convey a concussion in realistic terms in a wrestling match.

Look at how much has changed in selling from Shawn alone between 1995 and the recent sell job. While these angles weren't commonplace in 1995, Shawn's sell looked so realistic that people were buying it. Shawn's recent sell was typical Michaels overselling and people see right through it and aren't willing to take Orton seriously.

I'm guessing this is from In your House 4: Great White North (Flicking through '95 PPV's to see any dodgy HBK finishes). I can't find the match in the old-school thread, anyone have a youtube link?
