Contendership Tournaments

Having been impressed with the concept behind ECW's Elimination Chase, I started thinking about all of the differant ways to determine contenders, and in some cases champions.

 

On recent WWE programming, we've seen concepts like the Money In The Bank match, King of the Ring tournament, the Royal Rumble match, beat the clock challenge and in the past we've seen the gauntlet match and battle royales.

 

But I would be intruiged to know of any other matches of this ilk, so please post any others that you've heard of and how they work.

I forget how the ROH contender's trophy circle went, and I'm too lazy to reach for my old DVD's that are 1.5 feet away and put them in my player. Could somebody remind me?

 

Also, I know that the winner of Battlebowl 1996 was to receive a shot at the World Championship (although DDP got dicked out of that one). Come to think of it, I'd almost pay to see Battlebowl-style show over most WWE pay-per-views.

If WWE did a Battlebowl with all three "brands", and didn't book it really stupidly like WCW's last one (where basically every tag team was either together or on opposite teams, just by some coincidence), it could make for a decent show when they didn't have a lot else going on. It would be nice if they did something like that in the late fall or winter, post Summerslam, when it's not quite time to build up to WrestleMania yet.

It might not be a contendership tournament, but something that might could be used for that is the old Gauntlet system WCW used to run on their weekend programs -

 

A wrestler had to win a match on The Power Hour, World Championship Wrestling, and The Main Event. It could be done today with Raw, ECW, and Smackdown.

 

Doubt it would ever be brought back, but it was interesting idea.

There was the Final Four match that was intended to determine the #1 contender for WrestleMania XIII. A four-man elimination match, with elimination coming by pinfall, submission or being thrown over the top rope.

I remember a SVR 2007 storyline where Kurt Angle is WWE champ and there is a contendership tournament where Kurt teamed up with Masters and your character teamed with Benjamin and it turns out Kurt and Shelton were using you and Masters.
