Box Office Report 12/14-12/16

Recommended Posts

I gotta say, the one thing I look forward to when posting these BO reports is bob barron telling us which movies opened to less than a million.

It's actually movies released that had a per screen average of less than $1,000 which basically means the theatre was empty. So far I haven't seen any movies hit the sub-$1,000 plateau for this week, but boxofficemojo is still updating the actual numbers.

Also, in limited release Francis Ford Coppola's comeback movie Youth Without Youth tanked

I think a Will Smith-Denzel Washington thriller would be pretty awesome.

With Denzel as the bad guy, of course....I don't think the world is ready for Will Smith to be a villian.

There's no way Samuel Jackson is the #1 box office draw. If anything he's been in more duds and flops than anybody. Stuff like Star Wars and Jurassic Park hardly drew money because of him. There's not really many movies that he's been the top billed star of that drew much money at all, maybe SWAT of all things. I guess you could count Pulp Fiction, A Time to Kill, and the one Die Hard, though he wasn't top billed in any of them. I like Samuel a lot too, but he's hardly a consistent draw.

As far as who is currently the #1 draw (as in not all time but currently) I might have to go with Depp since the POTC movies made huge money and he was in fact a real big reason why they were big hits.

How often is it that a movie pulls in over $40 million and it comes in second, and by $30 million?! That's insane.

The Star Wars movies, Jurassic Park and the Incredibles all ran his numbers up. And had little part in them being successful. Although the "drink of water" scene in Incredibles was great.

Dreamworks marketing for Shrek 1 was a big reason why the movie was a success. It was the first computer animated film that really touted its starpower, and Eddie Murphy in family films is always a good selling point.

Its marketing was good, but the fact it was actually good, reviewed well and got a great buzz off of that. And the movie was good mostly for Eddie Murphy's character and the skewering of classic disney films.

Depp's a big draw, but he doesn't have the track record of Will Smith. Sweeney Todd will be a big test of his drawing power.

Samuel L. Jackson is #1 if you add up all his movies basically, including bit parts.

The only guy I can think of who is on Will's level of consistency is Tom Hanks, however he's had some bombs in recent years after being bullet-proof for a while. Gibson was bullet-proof for most of his career but he hasn't starred in a movie in forever and the arrest may drag him down next time he does.

Johnny Depp has the Pirates movies and that's about it, when it comes to blockbusters or whatnot that he's responsible for.

Browsing the box office sites, only two gusy have a higher "per movie gross" than Will Smith: Orlando Bloom and Mike Myers. Bloom is REALLY helped by the LOTR and POTC films since everything else he's done bombed and Myers is helped by the fact that outside, of the Austin Powers and Shrek movies, he's made about 3 movies in the past decade (Cat In The Hat, 54, A View From The Top).

I figured Nicholas Cage and Tom Cruise would be up there, maybe even Bruce Willis.

Edit: Each of them has had a few movies lately that didn't gross as well as I thought.

Here's the list:

Day After Tomorrow opened to 68.7 million to Shrek 2's 72 million.

Longest Yard opened to 47.6 million to Star Wars' 55 million.

Madagascar also opened that same weekend as Longest Yard and made 47.2 million

Casiono Royale opened to 40 million to Happy Feet's 41 million.

So I'm not sure how reliable this report is but word is that Walk Hard bombed like Nagasaki this weekend, coming in something like fourth or fifth place. National Treasure 2 was #1 with something around 45 million which would normally look good but after I Am Legend's haul it'll be tough to top.
