NHL Thread, March 2008

We're going to take three draft picks back, and given Kevin's recent performance, I expect them to be excellent picks.

When did the Vince McMahon of Hockey say that? For someone who's as intelligent as Burke is hockey-wise, I really hope it wasn't recently. Come to think of it, saying it in October or November only means more egg on his face anyway; Good on him.

You can underline that with Edmonton's win today, in which they played about 53-1/2 minutes of top-notch hockey. Baron was spot on: Iginla's hat trick, two guys named Pouliot getting their first of the year against Alberta-based teams, a shootout in Montreal, a blowout in Steel City, the aforementioned Oilers win, and an phenomenally entertaining Leafs win? What a day for hockey, indeed.

At least they got a point against the Habs this year.

Don't forget four fights in Calgary, especially the main event between Vandermeer and Simon. Vandermeer suits well with Iron Mike.

ESPN Classic Canada has a 1982 playoff game between Edmonton and Los Angeles tonight. What strikes me immediately is how much SKINNIER these players look compared to today. Some of that is probably all the extra padding they have today, but it's still really evident how much bigger and more powerful today's players are.

I hate to do this here since it involves HD, and I hate even more to agree with Nick Kypreos, who just said this on whatever show is being simulcast on the FAN 590:

"After the Leafs-Sens Saturday, in high-def, CBC switched to Boston-Montreal, not in high-def (it was though). I've gotta say, I could hardly watch. It's like my daughter took off my eyeglasses, licked them, then put them back on."

Four games on tap tonight. Pittsburgh should take care of Long Island, but three big ones for playoff positioning: Ottawa-Montreal, Calgary-Colorado, Minnesota-Edmonton.

I've noticed that with CBC as well. It seems like they have a higher quality HD feed they use for national broadcasts and a lesser quality one for the other games (including the 10 PM game sometimes). I don't know the technical details well enough to explain why but there is a definite difference.

My assumption is every camera isn't HD, but they stretch them out. That's certainly the case with the netcams.

Kostopoulos black eye is getting worse each day.

Isn't it awful?

Speaking of awful, I'm glad I didn't bet anything tonight. I would have bet my house on Pittsburgh and Ottawa, but they're losing 3-1 and 4-1 at the moment.

I'm adding Steve Begin to my list for his crosscheck/hit from behind on Marc Savard that will force Savard to miss at least two games. Personally, I wouldn't mind a Monty Python foot crushing the Canadiens dressing room. No call on that Begin hit either. Just saying.

Bruins remaining schedule:

@ Leafs (Tues, 25th)

Leafs (Thurs, 27th)

Senators (Sat, 29th)

@ Sabres (Sun, 30th)

@ Jersey (Wed, 4/2)

@ Senators (Fri, 4/4)

Sabres (Sat, 4/5)

The Sabres and Leafs are three and four points back, respectively, of the Bruins' 8th spot. The Senators and Devils are in the middle of the pack in the East. To say that these last seven games are going to be tough, important and ulcer-inducing is an understatement.

I agree, and he should have gotten a double minor. That was an intent to injure.

I'd say 500 hockey in the four against the Sabres and Leafs gets the B's in. I've said this before, but Washington is too green (no pun intended) to hang on for another two weeks, and Florida can't be this good.

I'm pretty sure Chris has destroyed his TV.

No, not at all. This just means that baseball season starts earlier for me than last year.

Six hours. I might wake up that early tomorrow morning.

And tell me this isn't the story of the Sens' year between the pipes: Gerber gets the hook in the first after allowing three, but Emery does no better, allowing four. The Habs take a 7-1 lead into the third, where the Sens score four times - giving Emery the loss.

Colorado and Edmonton are your winners in the two western games. Colorado moves into a tie for 7th with Calgary at 86 points, only three back of first-place Minnesota. The Oil are still three back, Nashville four, and even Chicago are only six behind. What a crazy two weeks this is going to be.

You can already see the tears rolling down the faces of leafs fans as they lose to boston.

Did you know you can piss on the face of a leafs fan and tell them its raining and they'll believe it. I mean come on, they buy the leafs organization pushing Kyle Wellwood as a "crafty" future grade A player who is top line material, I mean atleast piss and rain are both wet. Nothing about Kyle Wellwood says top line.

At this point, I'd say that Washington is the only team not currently in the top 8 with a chance at making the playoffs. They have the easiest schedule left of any of the playoff contenders -- two against Florida, two against Tampa Bay and one more against the 'Canes. Boston must beat the Leafs again to have any measure of confidence heading into the final five games.

Nice bounceback game for the Senators against Buffalo, but far too little, far too late to catch the Canadiens. I'm almost hoping the Rangers catch them for fifth so they can draw Carolina in the first round instead of the Devils or Penguins.
