The OAO Dragon Ball movie thread

I only watch subs.....I don't think that makes you an elitist. The kids I described above are more of the elitist type.

Amen to that. Hell, I won't watch new movies out of China without subs. Curse of the Golden Flower was wonderful.

As to DBZ, I know a friend who basically has the entire series fansubbed long before it hit the States, and it was a great story, especially the Cell Games. I always liked DBZ becuase I figured out Goku's and Vegeta's relationship long before anyone in our watching group.

Funimation should have released episodes in order and with the subtitles.

This movie isn't going to go very well. Nuff said.

You know, I'm not even going to touch that movie with a 16 foot pole. Hell you could wrap a condom around the 16 foot pole and I'd still feel unsafe about it.

Subs/Dubs. I watch both. Usually I'll watch the subs first and then the dubs. I think both have their place, and some dubs are very well done (see: Akira - both dubs, anything with Johnny Yong Bosch - Trigun, Bleach, Akira redub, The Slayers TV Series, and Cowboy Bebop).

I AM an elitist, because you saying Bleach has a good dub inspired a desire to stab everyone who made that dub in the ear for the pain that thing caused me.

Well back when I was a big DBZ fan I wanted to take everyone at Funimation out back and shoot them. Not so elitist.....just wanting quality work done.

Elitist or idiotic? Are you for real? Bleach probably has one of the best TV series dubs I've heard in a long time, since the Slayers even. Bosch plays Kurosaki perfectly, IMO. I really don't know what you're expecting when it comes to voiceacting. It's a lot harder than you think.

Some of the Bleach cast have come around. Bosch is one of the few that actually have. Ishida is okay and throughout the Ichigo fight I thought Byakuya sounded better. However, many of the tertiary characters (Toshiro Hitsugaya, Shunsui Kyouraku) have not and are so far off the mark, some even being completely wrong for the part. It wouldn't have been too difficult finding someone who could go deeper for Chad, either, considering how simple he is, and Orihime is part of the problem with female VAs that Hawk talked about.

It isn't so much a problem with the VAs themselves, who may be talented since there are a lot of names there who have no trouble getting work, they just aren't right for some parts. It's merely bad casting and directing. So much of the dialogue sounds forced and while fans would have complained if they hadn't been, pronouncing Japanese words and names exactly, thus emphasizing them in comparison to the rest of the script, makes them stand out and seem unnatural, and disrupts flow, so that doesn't help.

Likewise, though I do want them to match voices as closely as possible, when it's forced and sounds unnatural, like a lot of times in Bleach, there's just no point. Like the chick that plays Orihime. She was Eureka in Eureka Seven and was pretty good there, if only because it seemed natural above all else. Then she was Mikuru in the Haruhi dub, and while she can match pitch and everything, it just doesn't sound right in the end, like with Orihime. I just have problems upon problems with Bleach, but the main cast is, by and large, okay. Excepting Orihime and my minor Chad hangup.

So another quirk of mine is that if all the voices are correct, tone, pitch, all that, but it sounds like crap regardless because of other factors, then fuck it. In that case I'd rather have natural sounding, if incorrect voices, over something perfect.

Chow Yun-Fat as Master Roshi: Goku's mentor.

What.

WHAT.

Oh god, Chow. Why. You can't need the money that badly.
