Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978) - George A. Romero Do I need to say why? This is the most classic zombie flick ever made. Great gore, incredible depth to the plot, and a cold slap in the face of corporate America. Not to mention the action, the adventure, the comedy, and how Romero flat-out says that greed and pride are the worst of humanity's sins.
Jorge Gorgeous 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 I didn't think this would still be here, but I'll take it! The Big Lebowski - 1998 This is my favorite Coen brothers movie (althrough Fargo is a close second, and was a great pick.) The Dude is an eternal character. John Goodman as Walter is one of my favorite characters of all time. It's hillarious, and it's hillarious in a way that I can appreciate over and over again. Walter Sobchak: Nihilists! Fuck me. I mean, say what you like about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 There Will Be Blood I figure I can't leave this for another round. Fantastic cinematography, a captivating plot dealing with interesting subjects and themes, and a standout performance by Daniel Day-Lewis that I'll remember years from now. Craig Th 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Seabiscuit by Gary Ross I just woke up, so I can't think of anything great to say here. Basically I love this movie, it always chokes me up. I'll add more later.
Canadian Brandon 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Batman Begins My favorite comic book character. I almost took this one last round but chose to go with the original instead. This is, IMO, the best of all the Batman movies however.
Canadian Brandon 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Knocked Up This is my favorite comedy of all time. I didn't want to take a chance of not having it in a couple of rounds. A perfect comedy.

Darthtiki 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Swingers - Dir. Doug Liman 1996 One of my favorite films during the time in the mid to late 1990s that I refer to as "When Miramax ruled the earth". Great, quotable script showing the culture of LA nightlife at the time with a great cast of Jon Favreau (who wrote the film), Vince Vaughn, Heather Graham and Ron Livingston. The soundtrack owned with swingin' cuts by Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra. Plus how can you not love a movie that features video game hockey and the line "I'm gonna make Wayne Gretzky's head bleed for Superfan #99 over here"
Craig Th 0 Report post Posted June 6, 2008 Hmm, I wanted Knocked Up. 40 Year Old Virgin I need to laugh on the island, so if I can't have KU, I'll go with 40 Year Old Virgin.

Darthtiki 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Go - Dir. Doug Liman 1999 The second of my Doug Liman pre-Bourne picks, this multi angled story takes place in the rave scene of LA. The cast was solid with a pre-Mothership Katie Holmes, Timothy Olyphant (with the beginnings of his dick mode that would serve him in the future), Taye Diggs, Breckin Meyer, Jay Mohr and Scott Wolf. The soundtrack is probably one of my favorites of all time with "New" by No Doubt and others.
The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 The Seventh Seal An excellent existential text, let alone a classic movie. Faced with life on a desert island, I'd probably turn to Bergman and Max von Sydow before Camus or Beckett. Bergman's Death is iconic. Shot on location! Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Ohhh, that's a good pick. I'm not 100% sure I'd have picked it, but I'm bummed it's off the table so soon.
Jorge Gorgeous 0 Report post Posted June 7, 2008 Saving Private Ryan - 1998 - Spielberg This is my favorite war movie, and it has my favorite war movie scene... Omaha Beach. Hanks is fantastic and you've got great performances from a bunch of others, too... Tom Sizemore, Barry Pepper, Adam Goldberg... VIN DIESEL.

Ravenbomb 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 The Trial Orson Welles' best movie, and probably one of my top five movies of all time. Perfectly captures Kafka's bizzare story, highlighted by an overlooked performance by Anthony Perkins.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 Huh. I've owned a copy of that movie forever, and have never gotten around to watching it. Weird, cuz I'm a fan of the book. Gotta watch it sometime soon. Oh, and Seventh Seal? Damn you Funk! I wanted something from Bergman on the list, but that was the go-to, and I'm not sure what the #2 pick would be.
godthedog 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 i had no idea 'the seventh seal' had so many fans. i always figured that 'persona' was the go-to bergman favorite.
Corey_Lazarus 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 Ghostbusters (1984) - Dir: Ivan Reitman Comedy. Action. Drama. And fucking lasers! This is the kind of movie that people of all ages can enjoy. When you're little, you see this movie, and you go "sweet, they've got lasers and they're hunting ghosts, awesome!" Then you turn 14, and now have a much dirtier sense of humor. Then you watch it again. And you walk away going "Bill Murray is a dirty, dirty man." That's why this movie has remained so timeless and so classic: it's an action/adventure movie for little kids, and a raunchy comedy for older audiences. When talking about the careers of Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson, this film is ultimately their highlight, the best work they've ever done. When talking about Bill Murray it gets a little harder to pinpoint just one great movie, considering how many he's been so great in, but Ghostbusters holds much more weight than, say, The Man Who Knew Too Little or Garfield. If I'm on a desert island, you can be your ass I'd love to laugh and just sit back and enjoy the greatest movie of my youth.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 i had no idea 'the seventh seal' had so many fans. i always figured that 'persona' was the go-to bergman favorite. Really? I've always seen much more hype and Beste Fylm Evah type huzzahs for Seventh Seal than Persona. Plus while it's weird to say that SS is "more normal" than anything, it sure as hell fits that description compared to the other movie. Persona is an aggressively challenging, inaccessibly obscure, and rather unfriendly work. I don't know if I'd come right out and call it "the Ulysses of the cinema" or some other similarly sweeping statement, but it is in that neighborhood. The Mandarin 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 For what it's worth, I thought Cries and Whispers was the consensus favourite of Bergman's films. It does seem like Persona provokes the most discussion, however.
Jingus 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2008 I think more people have seen Seal than any of the others. I blame the insidious influence of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey.
PUT THAT DICK IN MY MOUTH! 0 Report post Posted June 9, 2008 Annie Hall I can't really put into words why I love this movie so much, which is largely why it's taken me so long to get this posted. I mean, I could just recite the thing's Monster.com profile ("Best romantic comedy ever!" "Woody Allen's masterpiece!" "Seriously funny and insightful and moving all at once!" etc) but that seems kinda hollow and empty for a movie that means so much to me on a personal level. So instead I'll just say that Diane Keaton melts my ice-cold heart like no other and leave it at that.
