The One And Only King Of The Ring Thread

I'm not sure if it was the Kool Aid or what, but I really enjoyed KOTR. I mean, the crowd was off, and there seemed to be a little more blown spots than usual (nothing too bad), most everything seemed solid to me. Jericho/RVD was match of the night, Test and Lesnar was surprisingly watchable, I love anything that involves Trish, and the wrestling in that match was great too, Flair and Eddy was great (minus ending)...Hogan still knows how to work a crowd, which made his and Angles match watchable, the Rock skit was pretty funny, as much as I didn't want Lesnar to win, I liked the little match they had (although RVD didn't sell Jericho's attack at all. I came in on this match during the first showing, and I couldn't even tell he'd been attacked until they say something. Seriously, they shouldn't mention the damn attack if he's not gonna sell it)...and I liked Taker/HHH the 2nd time around (STABILITY!).

So overall, on the Papacita ratings scale...0 being worst, 10 being the best...I'd give this PPV a 6.5!!!!!!!! 6.5!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My thoughts on King of the Ring 2002.

EH.

It was OK. Nothing that set my world on fire or anything. The main event was ATROCIOUS! And that comes from a guy who actually doesn't mind Taker and HHH. That was the worse match of the year as far as high profile, highly promoted matches go. HHH, go get your surgery, please. You are not in any condition to wrestle on main events right now. Kudos to the writing staff and Vince for keeping the belt on Taker so he can build it back up. Last thing they need right now is undisputed hot potato.

Angle/Hogan was shitty until the hot ending. Even Angle can't get a good match out of Hogan. The ending made that match. If not for the ending, it would be on par with the main event. Again kudos to Vince for letting Angle go over CLEAN.

The King of the Ring matches were ok. Jericho/RVD tore the house down IMO. (at least that was how it played out to the folks at the sports bar I watched this ppv at) Brock/Test was another match saved by the ending, cause before that they stunk it up.

Cruieserweight match was decent, but hurt by lack of crowd heat. Am I the only one who actually digs Nidia and Knoble?

Eddy/Flair seemed to drag big time. I was eating up Eddy playing heel with a spoon. Eddy is reason #1 that I still watch Raw. Flair was ok, nothing special. They really shouldn't have him wrestle. If I were Eddy, I might attempt to kill Austin if I saw him cause now he goes from Austin to Bubba Ray. What?!

And finally we get to my second favorite match of the night, Trish/Molly. These gals brought their work boots. They didn't botch anything and were solid, which is more than I can say for 90% of the men who wrestled at King of the Ring.

Like I said earlier. Eh.

Did JR at all sell the fact that RVD was probably worn out from the match with Jericho? Or was he creaming all over Lesnar, as usual?

I don't think JR mentioned RVD's match with Jericho at all during the KOR finals.

Lesnar beating Rob in three minutes I didn't like, but that made sense too, as it showed the Jericho attacking Van Dam after the match affected him enough to allow Brock to win easier than usual, which is also something they could use for a hotshot on Raw tonight. Think about it: Heyman interfered, Van Dam wasn't fully recovered from the Jericho attack... hey, it could happen.

Well... if they wanted to get RVD even MORE over he should have done the 'impossible' thing.

He's attack by Jerky after the match. He's tired.. he has to fight Brock... he can't win, right? Well, yeah... he could of. The WWE could have played it well.

This is after Brock hit the F5 on RVD...

JR: MAH GAWD!! RVD KICKS OUT!! THE MAN WILL NOT STAY DOWN, DAMNIT!!

Then, Heyman gives Brock a chair... you figure out what happens after that. Bam, RVD has done the impossible and beaten Brock even though he was tired, he was attacked after his match, and he was getting squashed.

That would have put the guy over even more.

Just my two cents... which means shit.

I've read two posts about how Lesnar winning was the right thing because RVD is already over.

WEll...any other year that makes perfect sense.

But this year the winner Main Events SummerSlam.

Totally different.

KOTR was pretty similar to all the other PPV's this year in being thoroughly mediocre. As with the other shows a couple of decent matches managed to to save it from being totally worthless.

RVD/Jericho: ***1/2

I know we're all desperate to claim a **** star match at the moment but this was good rather than great. It was messy and awkward to begin with but it eventually built quite nicely with some neat spots and a couple of good near falls. Match of the night but Angle/Edge, Jericho/Rock and Tajiri/Kidman all have it beat this year.

Test/Brock: 1/2*

Wasn't completely horrible but it was still pretty poor, its obviously too early for Brock and Test just doesn't have that 'X' factor needed to go any further up the card.

Knoble/Hurricane: **1/4

Bit of a dissapointment considering what these two are capable of, the thread somewhere else on the board about the restrictive 'WWE Style' pretty much sums up why it was so mediocre. Even when two decent cruisers aren't on their game properly they should still be able to produce something more enjoyable than an average WWE match given the freedom to wrestle the proper style. Ending was poor.

Flair/Guererro: **

Incredibly dull and lifeless affair from what could have been an entertaining little match. Eddy just seems a bit flat to me since he's returned and they just couldn't pull it off. The ending was a classic WTF?....Who cares? type deal.

Molly/Trish: **

Good effort and a solid match, could have gone a couple of extra minutes for me considering how some of the other matches dragged badly. I can hardly remember the last time a womens match was the worst on a big card, it certainly shows up the sorry state of the match quality at this years PPV's. I'd seen the same ending too recently between them though.

Hogan/Angle: *

Hogan couldn't even be carried by Angle really although it was certainly more bearable than Hogan's last couple of matches. Getting the right winner with the right finish was a big plus though, anything other than a clean finish would have been worthless to Angle.

Brock/RVD: 1/2 *

Too short to be of any worth and a real anti-climax in all respects.

Undertaker/HHH: DUD

Everthing's already been said really. Thank god the Rock is back! Maybe he can save us from this awful run of World title matches. HHH/Jericho at Mania was the last passable one, Rock/Jericho at the Rumble was the last decent one and their match at No Mercy was the last great match.
