DangerousDamon 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2009 RESULTS Pre-Show a. Alex Payne & Red Ninja d. Ernie Osiris & "Beautiful" Bobby Shields - Seagull got there after the pre-show, so he got this result from someone near by, hence the "someone else". b. Andy "Right Leg" Ridge vs. Brandon Day - Unsure of winner c. Bobby Dempsey vs. Orange Cassidy - Unsure of winner, though one would think Dempsey. MAIN SHOW 1. Brent Albright d. Rhett Titus - Albright wins with the half nelson suples 2. Delirious d. The Necro Butcher, Damien Wayne, & Sean Denny in a Four Corner Survival - Delirious wins with the Shadows over Hell on Sean Denny Kyle Durden is now in the ring to interview Austin Aries. Aries says the fans owe him an apology for turning their backs on him. He had hoped he'd have some closure after making Jacobs say I Quit, but that didn't come. Says that the crowd always cheered no matter who was being hit with chairs. Says that Tyler Black is nothing more than the flavor of the month, and that the fans will turn on Black just like they turned on him. He says he's done wrestling for us, for the company, for DVD sales, for snowflakes. He's now only wrestling for himself. He says he is NOT going to cash in his title shot at a "B Show" like tonight. He then knocks out Kyle Durden. Tyler Black comes out and says if Aries doesn't want the title shot, he'll take it. Black tries to attack Aries, but Jacobs jumps Black from behind. Jay Briscoe comes out to make the save...and challenges Aries and Jacobs to a three way match, which is on now. Aries and Jacobs seem to be working together... 3. Jay Briscoe d. Austin Aries & Jimmy Jacobs in a 3 Way Match - Jay wins with a roll up on Jacobs after he makes Jacobs accidently hit Aries with the spear. Jacobs and Aries never really came to blows during the match, but were not "together" either. They pushed each other back and forth, but Seagull described it as similar to the Dudley's pushing each other, psyching each other up. After the match, Jacobs spits his gum at Aries, who picks it up off the ground and chews it. Nigel McGuinness vs. Tyler Black for the ROH World Title is official for tonight. Nana comes out and takes his belt off, offering to be a lumberjack! He's escorted out, the Lumberjack Strap Match is up next! 4. Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards d. Roderick Strong & Erik Stevens in a Lumberjack Strap Match - Edwards hit Stevens with a chair behind the refs back. Lumberjacks went after everyone, no heel or face distinguished in that. -INTERMISSION- Ernie Osiris is out walking through the crowd, asking for money, during intermission. Crowd is estimated in the 600 range. He said it isn't as packed as last time in Edison. 5. Grizzly Redwood vs. Chris Escobar went to a No Contest - Bison Smith came in and destroyed them both. 6. Jerry Lynn d. Bryan Danielson - Lynn wins cleanly with the Cradle Piledriver! After the match Danielson teases not shaking hands, but eventually does. During the match, Nigel tried to walk out of the match, Danielson came out and stopped him and said he'd kill him where they stood...match continues! Later on...(from another source) Jacobs attacked Tyler, Lynn came out and attacked Nigel, then Aries, Strong, Stevens, Albright, American Wolves, and Jay Briscoe were all out brawling. Danielson came out and ordered everyone to the back saying that the match was undecided, and for the World Title. Jacobs atacked Danielson, and the big brawl started again. Jay and Albright both did ???? off the top rope. Danielson did a dive into the crowd and the brawl moved into the crowd. Everyone brawled to the back. Sinclair and Cary conferred...and the match MUST CONTINUE! After all that... 7. Nigel McGuinness and Tyler Black go to a time limit draw! - Tyler hit the superkick while Nigel was on his knee just like last night, and as he was crawling over for the pin, the bell rang for the time limit. Seagull timed it and said it was only about 45 minutes...so could be a 45 minute time limit. Tyler asked for five more minutes, Nigel said no way, and headed to the back, ending the show! All the folks on the ROH message board all got pretty pissed that Black/Nigel was not a 60 minute draw, however, I'm assuming that it was supposed to be a 45 minute time limit due to the shows being shorter. I guess they're also building up the Superkick as Tyler's new INSTADEATH move.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2009 I just think they didn't expect ROH fans to know how to tell time. Which is a fair assumption. I wasn't at the show, but based on the timing of the other matches, you could tell they were going time limit draw. Nigel v. Black in NYC next time will be huge. SamoaRowe 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2009 A 45 minute draw in place of a 60 minute draw is hardly something to get upset about. I know it's not consistent with the rules in the past, but I wouldn't sweat it.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2009 The fact that it was 49 minutes is kind of wonky though. And GLF didn't even time the match! They should do a match with a 60 time limit draw and fight to another draw, setting up the no-time limit third match. Just like Punk v. Joe.

I actually like the idea of a 45 minute time limit draw. I know this is going to sound stupid, but, I'd be more likely to watch a 45 minute match over a 60 minute match because the latter just sounds like it's going to be a chore to watch. Dr Funkenstein PhD 0 Report post Posted January 18, 2009 ^ I concur with that diagnoses (LOL insider doctor lingo). The brawl sounds fucking pointless in the first few minutes of the main event. I can understand Lynn, Jacobs, and Aries, but why did Brent Fatone and Roddy have to involve themselves? I suppose it's better than the ridiculous brawls where everybody has to do a dive to the outside on to half the roster.
Mystery Eskimo 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2009 Bison Smith? That's kinda cool, always liked his work. I wish RoH would stop using Grizzly Redwood though. As a comedy character he kinda fails to actually be funny.
Silence 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2009 I wish RoH would stop using Grizzly Redwood though. As a comedy character he kinda fails to actually be funny. It comes off like a WWE mid-90's gimmick, which isn't what ROH is supposed to be about.
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2009 No, it's supposed to be about a dozen guys doing gimmicks where they have one favoured strike that can knock people out~! ROH needs more characters. I know it's serious wrestling, pure wrestling and so on, but there's only so many hard-hitting 15-20 minute pure wrestling hard striking matches with no reason to cheer anyone based on personality certain people can take. Besides, you can't have a guy like Grizzly start knocking people out with roaring elbows to get over. The students need characters. When they didn't have characters, nobody cared about them and their sole responsibilities were set up the ring and try and make Ricky Reyes look impressive. (At least they got the ring right.) Grizzly's character needs some work, but on the same token certain ROH fans need to get a sense of humour about wrestling too and not think themselves 'above' cheering someone on the undercard dressed as a lumberjack. Silence 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2009 You can have comedy without it being over-the-top in ROH.
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted January 19, 2009 I agree you can. But when was the last time they did? You had Hero and Sweeney, before Gabe had Hero drop the entertainment because he was getting too positive a reaction and suddenly Hero was KOing people with roaring elbows and Sweeney was mocking Bobby Dempsey for being a virgin. You had Delirious, until Gabe decided it'd be better to put him in a serious feud with the Hangmen 3 and then go emo. Davey Richards used to be the amusing on of the No Remorse Corps, but that got dropped. Generico and Steen were amusing on and off. The Briscoes promos are amusing but I'm not sure they're supposed to be. The only comedy character I could name would be Bushwhacker Luke. Maybe I'm just bias because I'm sick of ROH being too one-note and serious recently, I dunno.
Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 What about Rhett Titus? That's a total Sports Entertainment gimmick.
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 You can have comedy without it being over-the-top in ROH. It's a harmless opening match gimmick.
King Cucaracha 0 Report post Posted January 21, 2009 What about Rhett Titus? That's a total Sports Entertainment gimmick. Man, how could I forget Rhettski the Jettski? I guess I lumped him in with Grizzly and now Ernie Osiris as recent. But thinking about it Rhett debuted that gimmick a while before all the other students got makeovers. No coincidence that Delirious is the trainer at the wrestling school now and suddenly the students are being entertaining.
