Guest bravesfan Report post Posted December 19, 2002 "Secret of Management" and "Stupid Holiday Talent Show" up next.... Let's spark a little discussion: We all know that after Phil passed away, Jon Lovitz was cast to "fill his role", so to speak. In my opinion, NR was still great to watch after that tragedy, but it lacked that certain spark that Hartman brought to the show. NR was subsequently cancelled/not picked up after a season (or two?) without Phil. My question is: What do you attribute the cancellation of NewRadio to? --Bad writing? (The Johnny Johnson saga, etc.) --The absence of "Catherine Duke"? (blanking on actress' real name) --Indirectly, the passing of Phil Hartman? --Jon Lovitz? --Other. Share a few thoughts, get some aggression off your chest on this topic. Another one to throw out here: If Lovitz was not availvable, who would you use insert in his place? Or would you attempt to mimic Hartman's role?
Guest Spaceman Spiff Report post Posted December 19, 2002 Combination of factors - Phil's death, plus NBC kept moving the show, so it was never able to establish itself, and it didn't really have any big stars in it. At the time NR was on the air, Seinfeld was the big sitcom, and to most people, NR probably paled in comparison. I don't think Kandhi Alexander's (Catherine) departure had anything to do with it. To begin with, she wasn't really a big focus of the show. Plus, she wasn't there for all/most of Phil's last season, anyway (IIRC). One thing I didn't like about Season 5 was that a couple of the characters personalities shifted, notably Lisa & Dave. Lisa went from cold & reasoning to marrying Hobo Johnny, who also happened to be in jail, something I never would seen coming based on the Lisa of Seasons 1-4. Dave went from tolerating Matthew to all-out *hating* him in Season 5, which I also found kind of odd. As for replacing Phil, I don't know. The Bill character was just so awesome, anybody who replaced him would have had a tough time doing it. John Laroquette was the rumored replacement, which would have been interesting to see. Probably would have played a Dan Fielding-like character (his Night Court character), which I think would have worked better than the Max character. I like Lovitz, but the Max character just never did anything for me. The only reason they brought him in, IMO, was that he was close friends with Phil. Guest areacode212 Report post Posted December 19, 2002 NR never had great ratings, so that was probably the main reason. It's actually surprising that it lasted as long as it did. Khandi's departure wasn't a factor; she was easily the most underused character in the first place (they even made a little joke about it in one episode). Also, by the final season, the actors (I think mainly Maura & Andy) didn't enjoy doing the show anymore. The death of Phil probably had a lot to do with it. Andy Dick has said that it was a "relief" when NBC cancelled the show. The Max Louis character sucked. Both the other characters and he viewers hated him. It wasn't even the "love to hate" kind of hate. It was basically NewsRadio's version of "X-Pac heat". He was just annoying and you didn't want him on your TV, plus NR already had a goofy weird guy, so his character was pretty redundant. A Dan Fielding-type character might have been fun, but it still may have been a little too close to Bill McNeal character. Personally, I would have liked to see Lauren Graham return and join the regular cast. Maybe not as Andrea (it would have been a pretty contrived plot twist to have her morph from a consultant to a news anchor), but as a different character. She's a very fun actress (in both NR and Gilmore Girls), plus she was great to look at. Rrrow.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 19, 2002 Dave's extreme hatred of Matthew was kinda weird. Season 5 Dave was a complete asshole. Jimmy having facial hair after an episode where he completely renonced it was fucked up. Lisa marrying Johnny- ugh ugh ugh. The death of Phil pretty much was the beginning of the end. I think NBC only planned on keeeping that one year so it would go into sydnicaiton and they would make money. I think Bill was irreplaceable personally- no one would've been able to fill his shoes. I give credit to Lovitz for trying but like AC said- we already have a weird guy. I personally think they should've done Bill Moves On and just ended the show because I can't think of anyone who could replace Bill.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 20, 2002 From saturdaynightlive.tv- It is with pleasure I can tell you to buy Phil Hartman's new CD, "Phil Hartman's Flat TV", today! How is this possible? John Hartmann (brother of Phil) has produced and released a new comedy CD composed of old audio recordings of Phil Hartman in the 1970s. Phil, at the time a graphic design artist, recorded parodies, commercials, and sketches. They remained unreleased until this past year, upon which John decided Phil should have an encore performance. John Hartmann told the AP, "I'm putting this out there because I'm dedicating my life to fulfilling his dreams,". Another goal of Hartmann is to get a few of Phil's scripts into works. The CD sells at most popular music stores. This should be a good way to get back to seeing the Phil we know and love in a whole new way, and can help avoid the pain of his tragic loss. Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted December 22, 2002 Yeah, that's the CD I found on Amazon. I'm going to try and track it down today. The episode with Ted's death came on at one. Sorry I couldn't get to the computer in time to tell you guys. Oh, Scott Steiner ripped off Freakzilla from this episode.

Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 22, 2002 BTW- I bought Scotland PA which features both Lisa and Matthew and it's a pretty kickass movie. There aren't a lot of extras on the DVD but I'd recommend picking it up
Guest Mattdotcom Report post Posted December 23, 2002 A thought struck me earlier, maybe one of you guys can get it working. If Phil's brother wants to preserve his brother's memories, I wonder if he could get a decent NewsRadio DVD released? Maybe that CD has a way of contacting him. Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 23, 2002 I don't think so. I think Phil's brother was able to release it because he was next of kin or something. But if he used his influence to get a NR DVD released- well he'd be the coolest man ever

Guest The Fett Report post Posted December 30, 2002 Bad news... Just took a look at the A&E schedule for the next couple of weeks and Newsradio is nowhere to be found. Looks like A&E decided to drop the show again.
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 30, 2002 Yea that SUCKS. I wonder why A&E took it off again. Hopefully pretty soon they'll bring it back. On the bright side my schedule for second semester was going to cause me to miss a lot of NewsRadio so maybe it's some sort of blessing
Guest bob_barron Report post Posted December 30, 2002 My email to A&E- To Whom It May Concern- I recently did my weekly visit to A&E to see what episodes of NewsRadio would air and found out that the network has taken it off again. This dissapointed me greatly as my love for NewsRadio caused me to find the reruns on A&E which in turn made me a full fledged A&E fan. NewsRadio has a very loyal fan base which I am proud to be a part of and I hope that you change your mind. While I enjoyed waking up or eating lunch while watching two NewsRadios- I will have no problem if A&E only brings back NewsRadio for one episode per day. If the ratings were very low for the reruns or the rights ran out- I can understand that but I hope you reconsider this decision as I know many NewsRadio fans will be hurt around the world. Thank you for taking the time to read this email.
