I thought that Andre was never recognized because of the whole Hebner thing?

I think the "official" (read: mark) version of the story was that since Earl had a referee's license in Indiana, his decision stood and Andre was the champion. Then Andre surrendered the belt to DiBiase, which wasn't recognized, and the belt was held up for the WM4 tournament.

 

I remember reading that in a WWF magazine at the time.

The difference is that Andre was stripped for trying to give the title to Dibiase.

I was sitting on my floor in front of the tv MARKING THE FUCK OUT~! Benoit was amazing - they have to build to a face turn and program v. Eddy. The crowd was so into Benoit they popped for his short-arm clothesline.

 

This has been a pretty damn good show so far.
