Favorite Hip Hop songs part 2

Ice Cube - Today was a Good Day His jimmy went so deep it put the mammy to sleep. Those are words to love.   Wu Tang Clan - Bring Tha Ruckus Probably my favorite album opening yet, and an excellent statement of intent song. Ghost Face Killah's verse in the song is sure awesomeness.   Pharcyde - I'm That Type of Nigga The Pharcyde's first ablum is one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time, and this song is all kinds of awesome.   Notorious B.I.G. - Warning Let's put it to rest folks: lyrically, Biggie was always better than Tupac, and deserves more accolades than Tupac, who, let's face it, had albums filled with filler.   NWA - Straight out of Compton I still refuse to believe Ice Cube was in "Are We There Yet?" and it's sequal.   Public Enemy - Rebel Without a Pause My favorite PE song. Sure, Fear of a Black Planet may have more sonoc innovations, but lyrically, It Takes a Nation is superior.   GZA/Genius - Liquid Swords It's hard to pick a best song off of the album Liquid Swords, but here's my pick. RZA's stripped sown production is top notch, and GZA is great as always.   Beastie Boys - Shake Your Rump The best Beastie song off the best Beastie album. Slick sample ridden funk thanks to the Dust Bros., and some of the Beasties best rhymes. It's amazing that they were once good. Now they just kind of suck.   Ghostface Killah - K.I.L.O. In spite of popular opinion, I still think that Fishscale is the best solo Wu Tang album. I absolutely love this album.   Jay-Z - Nigga What Still my favorite Jay-Z song, with some awesome production (it's kinda spacey), an awesome beat, great chorus (Jay seems to have a way with choruses), and a great flow.   Snoop Dogg - Serial Killer This song always gets overlooked, IMO. The beat is incredible (Dre's early production is awesome), as well as Snoop in his prime.   Justin Warfield - B-Boys on Acid Warfield's album My Field Trip to Planet 9 is one of the most overlooked albums in 90's Hip Hop. It's a psychedelic, drug fueled, jazzy, and all around awesome album. This song captures the tone of the album perfectly.   More to come

Fart of Fury

-Well, I moved out of my dorm yesterday, and I'm currently looking for a job to take for the summer. So far, I'm looking at either computer work, the local newspaper, or the library.   -It seems like they killed Al-Zarqawi. Good to know. Now my dream of America battling former terrorists turned into flesh eating zombies comes closer everyday.   -Hotbutter Spoonwhatever: You better start spazzing out again, because I'm fucking bored right now.   -Why am I seeing Anderson Cooper everywhere all the sudden? He's like the new Nick Lachey, only less annoying, and a newsman.   -Finally, anybody remember the videogame 'Primal Rage"? Fun game, but damn, doing special moves and finishers was a pain in the ass. Anyways, I always played as Diablo.

Falwell, Friends List

-Well, Jerry Falwell kicked the bucket, and will most likely live in a personal hell of homosexuals. He'll be missed by-ah, who am I kidding? I always hated the fucker, so good riddence. I'm not going to celebrate, but I sure as hell won't miss him.   -Oh, I'm suprised it took me this long, but I added people to my friends list: The people I added:   Lushus Carnival Coat is my Father Czech KOAB Special K   If you want added, let me know.

Fair Haired Child (Masters of Horror)

Anyways, I saw the Master of Horror Episode "Fair Haired Child" last night. Other than one disappointment, it's pretty good. It's not the best episode, but it ties with Argento's episode ("Jennifer") as the creepiest. The whole thing has a great atmosphere, and it's probably the best thing that William Malone has directed yet. Plus, the acting was good, and the score was top notch. The only real flaw IMO, is the Fair Haired Child itself. The episode does such a good job at building this mounting dread about the creature, but when we finally see it, it's just not that great. It looks too much like the title character in the Aphex Twin video "Rubber Johnny" to be scary. Other than that, it's a good episode, and probably the most atmospheric episode of the series so far.   The next episode is called "Sick Girl", and is directed by Lucky ("May") McKee. Remember folks, it's on Friday at 10 on Showtime.

Erotic Nights of the Living Dead (Day 19)

19.) Erotic Nights of the Living Dead (1980)

Plot: Like you're watching this for a plot synopsis.

Review: Porn and Zombies? Yep, it's been done before: Porno Holocaust, Erotic Orgasm, Naked Lovers, and to a far lesser (and grosser) extent, Porn of the Dead are proof that some want to see flesh eating cadavers and people fucking in the same movie. Hey, whatever gets you off, I guess. Now, from the man who gave you the notorious Anthropophagous and it's sequel Absurd comes (pun intended) "Erotic Nights of the Living Dead."

First, how does it work as a porno? Well, there's a memorable sequence involving a woman, a wine bottle, and a cork. Other than that, this is rather tame. Sure, there's sex, but for the most part, it largely isn't that hardcore-George Eastman (who also wrote the movie) even keeps his pants on during sex. Also, the sex itself isn't really that erotic.

So, how about the zombies? Well, the good news is, they are great, and quite creepy. Nearing the end, the movie even builds upon some atmosphere, and the gore is pretty good (yes, we do see a guy getting his cock bitten off.) However, the scenes of the undead doing their thing (no, the zombies don't fuck) are often inter cut with sex scenes, which ends up being distracting as a whole. That ends up being a problem, as it becomes clear that director Joe D'amoto* doesn't know what kind of movie he wants to do.

In the end, it doesn't work that well as a porno, and as a zombie movie, it works better. However, the two just don't see eye to eye.

* Apart from Anthropophagus, D'amato also directed "Porno Holocaust" and "Erotic Orgasm. He's mostly known however, for directing the MST3K favorite Ator The Invincible.

Rating: 4/10 A missed opportunity to say the least. Who keeps their pants on during sex anyway?

Next Time: Sugar Hill.

Entry With a Mission

-Well, I'm not going to be able to see "Silent Hill" tonight. Why? Because of homework. Oh well, at least I have something to do.   -I've gotten sort of used to the image of the mutant baby. That out of the way, I agree with everybody else: It needs to go. Besides, the feminized anime wrestlers are the new disturbing of TSM, though they're also hilarious. Plus, they finally gave Masked Man of Mystery a good sig.   -You know, what ever happened to Punk's sense of humor. Sure, punk has always rebelled against society and such, but at least most of the bands of old (Ramones, Dead Kennedys) had a sense of humor to go along with it. I mention this because nowadays, it seems like all the "punk" bands have no sense of humor, and take themselves way too seriously. And people wonder why I prefer bands like The Sounds to Anti-Flag: Because while bands like The Sounds aren't really great bands, they are at least more fun than most "punk" bands of today, who have become too preachy for their own good.   -Last night, the legendary "Jessie's Song" episode of Saved By The Bell aired on Adult Swim. For those who haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it. It's (unintentional) comedy gold.

Down In The Park

-Well, it seems like Muslims are angry at the Pope for his recent quoting of an old text condemning Islam. I can understand their anger, and I do think that the Pope owes them a better apology besides a simple half-assed "I'm Sorry." That out of the way, they don't need to go around killing nuns and burning churches. Come on, leave that to the retarded Black Metal fans in Norway. Yeah, that was a rip on Black Metal.   -Bush talked to the UN today. I didn't see it (I was in class), so I have nothing to say about it.   -I miss Trish Stratus already.   -Neighbors upstairs are still making a recket at night. They are about on thin ice with me.   -Marvin left the boards. I never payed too much attention to him, but I guess he was alright.   -Oh, and this entry is named after a Gary Numan Song.

Depeche Mode Albums

Before I start my thoughts on Depeche Mode Albums, I'd just like to say R.I.P. to John Tenta.   Now, on to the reviews. Here they are, reviewed in order of release   -Speak and Spell-Lightweight stuff, and the only album produced by Vince Clark. There's some good tracks ("Photographic" and "Tora! Tora! Tora!" in particular), but for the most part, it's too lightweight.   -A Broken Frame-Underappreciated, though I'm always a sucker for transitional albums. Some tracks are too lightweight ("Meaning of Love" and "See You") but this album is more focused and better sounding, and shows hints of what they would become with "Leave in Silence" and Monumet". Also has experiments with dub reggae that are hit and miss, and "Nothing to Fear" is one of their best instrumentals.   -Constructuon Time Again-A bit of an industrial influence comes in with steel percusion samples and such on tracks like "Pipeline". "Everything Counts" is a classic, while "Shame" and "Love in Itself" are underrated. Songs like "More than a Party" and "The Landscape is Changing" really aren't that good though.   -Some Great Reward-I always thought "Blasphemous Rumors" was overrated, and "Somebady"is cringe inducing. Other than that, this is a good album, with "People are People" and "Master and Servant" would be a big influence on Industrial Dance, and "Something to Do" and "Lie to Me" are great Moody songs.   -Black Celebration-There are experiments in minimalism on some tracks, and they suprisingly work. Most of the album ("Sometimes" sucks though) is great, with a moody feeling that went over with synthpop fans. Not Tonight" is great, and "Stripped" is one of my favorite songs.   -Music For The Masses-Their best album, and a major classic. Everything about it clicks, even the instrumentals. "Never Let Me Down" and "Strangelove" have almost stadium levels of awesomeness, while "To Have and To Hold" creates a great atmosphere. Hell, even the alternate takes on songs and mixes are great.   -Violator-Everyone knows this album, so i won't say anything else.   -Songs of Faith and Devotion-Too inspired by Nine Inch Nails, this one is alright. "Rush" and "Mercy in You" are way too chest thumping, and hardly sound like DM songs. "I Feel You" does feature great use of guitar feedback, and "Walking in My Shoes" has a great, almost trip-hop feeling to it.   -Ultra-Their most underrated album. "Home" is the best Gore-sung song, while "It's no Good" features great synth work. Also, the use of guitars on "Useless" and "Barrel of a Gun" are great.   -Exciter-Their worst studio album. It sounds too much like they're trying to re-create "Violator", and some of the songs just feel like remakes. "I Feel Love" is great though.   -Playing The Angel-"Macrovision" is a shitty song. Other than that, this is a great album. Excellent use of analogue beats, and the songwriting is some of their best yet.   That's all for now. Next Time: Moving out of my dorm.

Dead Man's Party

I'm all dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man over my shoulder

Waiting for an invitation to arrive
Goin' to a party where no one's still alive

CHORUS
I was struck by lighting
Walkin' down the street
I was hit by something last night in my sleep
It's a dead man's party
Who could ask for more
Everybody's comin', leave your body at the door
Leave your body and soul at the door . . .
(Don't run away it's only me)

All dressed up with nowhere to go
Walkin' with a dead man
Waitin' for an invitation to arrive
With a dead man . . . Dead Man . . .

Got my best suit and my tie
Shiny silver dollar on either eye
I hear the chauffeur comin' to the door
Says there's room for maybe just one more . . .

CHORUS

Don't run away it's only me
Don't be afraid of what you can't see
Don't run away it's only me . . .

Dead Heist (Day 22)

22.) Dead Heist (2007)

Plot: A bank heist goes horribly arry when (what else) the dead come in for food.

Review: As far as recent Urban Zombie movies go, "Dead Heist" is better than Zombiez, but worse than Hood of the Living Dead and Gangs of the Dead. That's not saying much, especially when you consider the fact that "Hood" and "Gangs" are bad movies too.

The dead here are cut from the same cloth as the speedy zombies from the Dawn of The Dead remake and the infected from 28 Days Later and it's sequel, only generic instead of interesting or frightening. The gore is nothing new, though the fact that the dead can only be killed by being shot in the heart (and you're to blame...) is a poor attempt at trying something different.

As far as acting goes, Big Daddy Kane does the best job. He's not good, mind you, but he does the best job. Amusingly, while Bone Crusher and E-40 are advertised as staring in it, yet they aren't in the movie for very long-Bone Crusher appears in the beginning as a patron in a strip club so tame it could have passed for MTV's "The Grind", then disappears. Meanwhile, E-40 has less than 5 minutes of screen time as a porn director, and gives a "alright, where's my paycheck already" level performance. The rest of the cast ranges from a dead ringer for Vin Diesel to the white female cop, a white businessman thinking of joining the Nation of Islam (har har), and plenty of stereotypical gang banger characters.

While not the worst recent Urban horror movie, there's still nothing worth recommending here.

Rating: 2/10 I have no idea whether or not the fact that this reminded me of the "Attack of the Street Pimps" bit from Hollywood Shuffle is a good thing or a bad thing.

Next Up: The Grapes of Death

Dead & Buried (Day 26)

26.) Dead & Buried (1981)

Plot: Sheriff Dan Gillis (James Farentino) is investigating a series of murders in the town of Potter's Bluff. So, why are these dead bodies coming back? Does Mortician (Jack Albertson, in his last performance) have something to do with it?

Review: Released by a major studio, written by Dan ("Alien", "Return of the Living Dead", "Total Recall") O'Bannon, and directed by Gary ("Raw Meat", "Poltergeist III") Sherman, "Dead & Buried" tanked in the box office, but faired better on VHS. In the 80's era of Slasher movies and Splatter flicks, it's really a lost classic.

The plot could best be described as Stephen King meets E.C. Comics with a bit of H.P. Lovecraft. The dead in the movie aren't shambling, rotting corpses, and that's what makes them so eerie and unnerving-they just seem so much like normal people. You wouldn't know hey are zombies if you saw or talked to them, but you would know that something about them isn't right. While hardly a gorefest, it still has some memorable moments, including an infamous hypodermic needle to the eye sequence.

Acting wise, Jack Albertson steals the show as Dobbs the mortician, adding a nice undercurrent of black humor, as well as a sense of pride and respect for his work-you can tell the actor is having the time of his life playing the villain for a change. The rest of the cast is great, with faces such as Melody ("Flash Gordon") Anderson and Robert Englund popping up.

"Dead & Buried" is one of my favorite 80's horror movies, and should be seen by anyone who says they love horror. Believe me, you won't regret it.

Rating: Either 9/10 One of the best Zombie movies you don't hear much about, "Dead & Buried" is an underrated gem.

Next on the Plate: Dawn Of The Mummy

Gary Floyd

Gary Floyd

Dawn of the Mummy (Day 27)

27.) Dawn of the Mummy (1982)

Plot: A group of supermodels disturb the sleep of a mummy, incurring it's wrath-as well as the wrath of the undead.

Review: Filmed in Egypt, this Italian/American co-production is a lot of things, but good isn't one of them. If anything, it's proof that not every Italian Zombie movie is going to be good (see also: Zombi 4: After Death; Killing Birds.) Thing is, unlike say, Hell of the Living Dead, this isn't even entertainingly bad. It's just mind numbingly boring bad.

The movie does offer some decent gore, but it's not until the last 15 minutes that the dead attack, and by then, it's too little, too late. You have to sit through atrocious acting and nothing notable happening. Also, the movie has characters who are supermodels, but none of them disrobe. Granted, it's hardly the first time an exploitation movie promised a lot but delivered little, but that's beyond the point. There's nothing interesting in the movie, and it feels too much like warmed over, reheated trash instead of entertaining trash. There's very little here that's interesting, while other Italian Zombie movies like Burial Ground and Zombi 2 remembered to bring the sleazy, gory goods.

"Dawn of the Mummy" is a waste of time for anyone and everyone involved, and isn't even worth watching drunk or stoned.

Rating:0.5/10 a very, very dull and painful viewing experience. Better than a shot on camcorder horror movie, but that's hardly a compliment.

On the table next: Hell of the Living Dead

Das Komabrutale Duell (Day 9)

09.) Das Komabrutale Duell (1999)

Plot: A dude is killed, another guy wants revenge, and people kill each other, then return...over and over again. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Review: I don't even know why I bother. As I mentioned in my review of Zombie Bloodbath, the 90's gave us a series of horrible shot on camcorder zombie movies. This wasn't just an American phenomenon, as this was also hugely popular in Germany, which has somehow become a haven for terrible microbudget splatterfests. This is no exception, and actually manages to be worse than Zombie Bloodbath. At least Zombie Bloodbath had something resembling a plot.

The whole thing literally feels like it was made by a bunch of teenagers with a severe case of Attention Deficit Disorder and a camcorder. There is literally no plot to speak of, and it's the cinematic equivalent of watching somebody play a dreadful "Mortal Kombat" rip off, only somehow worse.

Look, just because you and your friends own a camcorder and love horror does not mean you should be making horror movies yourselves. Oh, and Unearthed films: this did not need to be released on DVD stateside, ok?

Rating: -/10 Instead of explaining it, I'll let this video do the talking for me

Crazy Preacher, Prince Harry, Season Finales, and Phelps

-Lately down at the quad at the university (it's by the library-I'm at Wright State, BTW) there has been this crazy preacher guy. I say he's crazy because he hates gays, Catholics, Liberals, and a host of the other usual suspects (insert joke by kkktookmybabyaway here). I haven't gotten to see him yet (a few of my friends have) but I've been wanting to, since I could use a good laugh. Also, he has about 15 or more people yelling at him, so I probably wouldn't have a word in.   There were also two old guys outside two days ago (same day as the crazy preacher) protesting the war. I kind of felt bad for them. I mean, two people? That's not too good.   -Fred Phelps is still at it (like you are suprised), ready to picket Jerry Falwells funeral (Phelps is one of the few people one Earth who almost makes Falwell look good-almost), and putting together a lovely video called God Hates the World.   -Remember when it was announced that Prince Harry was going to serve in Iraq? Think Again. I guess his family found out that war is dangerous. That out of the way, you knew there was no way in hell he was going to fight over there.   -Finally, tonight's the season finale of "The Office", which I'm looking forward to. What can i say, I love the show (especially Mindy Kaling, who plays the uber adorable Kelly Kapoor. To hell with Pam, I like Kelly)

Crazy Preacher pt. 2, Homework, and RIP Bruno Mattei

-Last Friday, I finally got to see the crazy preacher dude I told you about last time. The guy himself is a riot, and dances around a whole lot. Really, he does a little footwork. He also has a tendancy to smack his bible and shove it in people's faces. Anyways, he railed on and on about homosexuals (I hear he did a lot of ranting about Catholics when I wasn't there), so I told him "You know, gor a guy who rails on about homosexuals a lot, you sure do have a pretty gay hat." Afterwards, a gay guy walked up to me and said "I agree with ya dude." I haven't seen the crazy preacher since, though next time, I'll probably recite the theme from "Fresh Prince of Bell Air" to him.   -I do have an excuse for not doing many journal entries lately: I've been knee deep in homework. I've had to finish reports, and finals are coming up, so there's the sad excuse.   -Good news: "Masters of Horror" has been renewed for a third season.   -Finally, Italian exploitation and horror director Bruno Mattei (aka "Vincent Dawn") has died. While none of his movies ("Hell of the Living Dead", "The Other Hell", "SS Extermination Love Camp", and "Rats: Night of Terror") were actually good, they were at least so good they were bad, in a MST3K sort of way.   1931-2007

Cosmo Kramer Doesn't care about Black People

-In case you didn't hear, Michael Richards, aka Kramer from Seinfeld, was doing stand up recently, when a pair of black guys stated to heckle him. His response: He went on a huge racist tirade.   If he wasn't jewish, I'd call him KKKramer.   -Thanks for the responses in my last entry guys. My blog wasn't getting any attention at the time, and I wanted some, so thanks.   -I was unfortunately unable to catch Horrorfest's 8 Films To Die For. So, anyone who did, let me know how it was.   -Well, it's nearing December. I'm just mentioning this to let you guys know that I'll be doing a few year end reviews in December, looking at horror, music, and this whole mess of a message board.

Come on, a talking ass?!?

-Well, Adult Swim has a new show called "Assy McGee." It's about a hard drinking, foul mouthed, tough cop...who's a naked, talking ass who occasionally farts.   Seriously. I'm not making thid up.   This idea would be amusing as a one time SNL TV Funhouse skit, but as an 11 minute series...come on. Normally, I don't complain about this kind of thing, but give me a fucking break. Clearly, William Street is no longer trying if this is what they think should be greenlit. Then again, they probably know that it sucks, and are just testing our patience. Now normally, I'm all for that. Hell, I thought showing "Saved by the bell" on Adult Swil was hilarious. This isn't hilarious though. It's just...stupid.   -Now that I'm done ranting, I finished Edward Lee's book "Coven" earlier today. It's a real blast, that's a bit cliched, but still good fun. Expect a review of it in the future.   -Finally, it seems like British music magazine NME has voted this girl as the coolest person in rock. She's Beth Ditto, lesbian frontwoman of a band called The Gossip. At least she's from the US.   No offense to British TSM posters, but I'm glad I don't live in the UK all the sudden.

Christmas Albums

Yeah, Christmas Albums   The Christmas Cocktails series are worth every penny. That's good too, since they are cheap. Loungy takes on old Christmas classics, and Dean Martin (among others)   Christmas on Death Row boasts one awesome song in Snoop's "Santa Claus goes to the Ghetto", and a whole bunch of filler-including cliched gangsta rap, r&b, and new jack swing.     Mariah's album has "All I Want for Christmas Is You" and "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)". It's worth it for those alone.   Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking either.   Jethro Tull's Christmas album is actually one of the better Christmas albums, in the fact that you can listen to it regularly. Granted, it's no Thick as a Brick or A Passion Play, but it's still pretty good.

Chocolate Jones and the Temple of Funk

Yes, todays entry is named after a MST3K bit.   -Cool news: There is going to be a fourth "Re-Animator" movie, called "House of Re-Animator", which will be directed by Stuart Gordon, and will co-star William H. Macy as the president of the U.S.   -It seems like there's now photographic evidence of a plane hitting the Pentagon of 9/11. So to all you conspiracy theoriest: Suck on it.   -Raw last night was a good show. It wasn't great, but it was good. Plus, no May 19th bullshit. Speaking of which, is anyone actually going to see "See No Evil"? I'll check it out as a DVD rental, but there is no way I'm seeing it in theatres.   -Matt Young is back, and I don't know whether I should be happy or sad.   -I bought 3 cd's today: "St. Elsewhere" by Gnarls Barkley, "Supernature" by Goldfrapp, and "Houses of The Holy" by Led Zeppelin. All three are awesome.   That's all for now. Next Time: another wacky entry title, and other such nonsense.

Ch-ch-changes

-In case you guys didn't notice, or you're an idiot, TSM has changed ownership. Here's some of what has happened over the last few days:   . Leena is back, and not with stolen accounts. Fortunately, she's been regulated to Whiney Bitches, and can't annoy us anymore. . Damaramu is back also. I never got to fully experience him before his banning, so maybe I can see what all the fuss was about. . netslob, widpegaus, and CronoT will remain banned. Nobody wants them to return. Actually, EHME wants WP to return, but everyone knows EHME sucks. . Not TSM related, but Christ, Marney is horrible. . Cheech is now going to try to clean up the WWE folder. To that, I say good luck-you'll need it.   -Now to other news-Spring break is over for me after today. So much for r & r.   -"Hur Hur, them jiggaboos!" Again, Marney is horrible.   -"South Park" last Wednesday was pretty good, though a second viewng of the episode has changed my previous opinion. Also, "Breastiary in Nippopolis."   -Awkward Lapdance is... wow. This has to be Hotbutter Spoontoaster, only not as funny.

Carnival of Souls (Day 4)

04.) Carnival of Souls (1962)

Plot: After a car accident, A woman finds herself in a strange carnival of the undead.

Review: One of the best pre Night of the Living Dead zombie movies (yes, the undead existed in movies before that-and they didn't eat human flesh either), "Carnival of Souls" is also a horror classic. Made for about $33,000, and released in drive in theaters with little fanfare, it has sense become heralded as a classic-and rightfully so.

The film itself feels like a nightmare meets a Twilight Zone episode, and the zombie make up isn't that great (again, made for $33,000), it nevertheless is a haunting gem, well acted throughout, and containing a killer climax to boot. In an interesting turn of events, the movie was more influenced by the likes of Bergman than the other drive in quickies of the time, which probably explains why it originally went ignored upon it's original relase.

If you want to see it, it's public domain, and easy to find. If you want to get it on DVD, get the Criterion Collection 2-Disc version, and while I love MST3K, avoid the version with Mike Nelson on commentary mocking it (seriously Mike, stick to ripping on bad movies.)

Verdict: 10/10 A horror classic that deserves to be seen by everyone-even those who normally don't watch horror.

Next Time: The Dead Pit.
