  1. I forgot how much I loved the live version of "Gone" that's on the bonus disc from M83's Dead Cities, Red Seas, & Lost Ghosts." Made my morning.
  2. I picked this shit up on the rugged streets of Rosslyn, Virginia, loc.
  3. Stuff about sample size & weighting. I'm not an expert by any means, I haven't been involved in social science research for a few years now. There are probably some places online where you can read up on stats if you're interested. Or just go to a very basic sample size calculator for some trial and error. Sample size is primarily driven by three criteria: desired margin of error, desired confidence level, and population. For "normal" polls, i.e. the Gallup/Zogby/whatever you see reported in new stories about polling, MOE of +/- 5% and confidence level of 95% are generally desired. When I plug in the Georgia numbers using your figure of 7 million, I get a recommended sample size of 385. 408 probably reflects a more nuanced understanding of response rate and the actual population of eligible voters. So, if you take any heed in quantitative research at all (and if you don't, then that's an entirely different bizarro issue), then yes, 408 is a completely scientifically acceptable sample size for the state of Georgia. Something within the margin of error on a 2-option poll is generally a stalemate, though obviously more gifted quant researchers can explore the data more thoroughly and give you deeper conclusions based on trending, demographics, etc. I have no academic stats background, but I work with survey numbers and polling proposals pretty regularly at my job.
  4. Agent is going to hunt you down and shit in your mouth, I think.
  5. I like it just fine, but I could name 30 songs of theirs I definitely prefer without pausing. "Hey Jude" is kind of like their "You Can't Always Get What You Want," in that sure, it's a fine song, but it's a bit simple for 7 minutes.
  6. Yeeeeeeeeeah boy. The reason I started liking the thread is cause it got me to think about all the Beatles songs I love, which was actually great because I haven't listened to them heavily in way too long.
  7. Fackin flowahs.
  8. Haha. Back in the day I submitted a few reviews to Pitchfork to see if I could pick up a contributing reviewer slot. I now see that I didn't unload nearly enough absurdity.
  9. This may be the worst musical writing I've ever read, appropriately about one of the shittiest bands ever:
  10. I'm probably the guy to talk about Singletary. He is as good as his statline says, though his shooting percentage was only in the mid-40s. All-ACC for, what, 3 years in a row, I think? I had the pleasure of watching him play a ton and he'll make a team who needs a 15-20 minute/game backcourt bench player very happy. Can play both the 1 and the 2--good ball-handling, and had to serve as the primary scorer most of his time in college. Undersized, still a bit prone to shooting up questionable 3s, and sometimes too eager to make the big play--half the time he'll make some absurd cut to the hoop or sink a crazy fadeaway, half the time he'll throw the ball away when he could have gotten it to someone else. Pesky defender as well. He has WTF mega-game potential too, occasionally throwing out something like 38 points, 10 assists, and 7 rebounds. At times, he pretty much was the entire team. I think he can play right away and be a great 6th or 7th man when your all-star point or 20 PPG shooting guard need a break. He might be too small to ever really be a starter, but he can get on a team and stay there. I think he'll go in the second round.
  11. And even worse, you just know it's gonna collect dust while he watches his Desert Island Veronica Mars DVDs.
  12. Well, everyone who's ever won MVP and is eligible is in the Hall, so that seems like a fair bet.
  13. Edit: I was beaten to the punch! Instead I'll just say that I think my Sim skills stopped with Sim City 2000, when my citizens got mad after I tried to run a train through their residential district. I was about 10 and thought the train would work kind of like a school bus, stopping every few blocks. I killed everybody with the monster and tornadoes after that.
  14. Even more importantly, a BBQ connoisseur. As fine a small-franchise meat joint as ever there was. West Florida thanks you, Lee Roy.
  15. No complaints from me. I would be fairly stunned if anyone took one of my last three picks.
  16. I thought about it a little more, and right now the shortlist includes "You Never Give Me Your Money," "A Day in the Life," and "Dear Prudence." And that's far from definitive.
  17. And with the end of the NBA Finals, the waiting gets that much harder. For anyone interested in the stats, probabilities, and trends side of college football, Sunday Morning Quarterback has some good stuff lately about run down vs. pass down success rates and QB development from year one to year two. CFN is also getting deep into their team-a-day previews, where pretty much every assessment includes something along the lines of "If they can handle so-and-so at home, there's a great chance to be 6-0 going into the big game with other-team."
  18. It's a big jump. The best thing to do would be to put some time on the Hard modes of GH2 or Rock Band, which are considerably easier than that of GH3. Excluding that, you can try a few things that helped me go from pathetic to decent: -Get more comfortable sliding your hand position, particularly remembering not to panic if you miss a note because you're positioned wrong. -Start with your index finger on the red and your pinkie on the orange, and make that your "home" position since it's much easier to stretch your pointer than your pinkie. It's easier to correct out of this position if you fuck up your hand movement. -Try a few songs in practice mode on half speed just to teach your hand how to slide back and forth on the neck of the guitar. Similarly, practice mode will let you go through the whole song messing up however much you want, so you can get an idea of the note chart and the really tough spots on any song.
  19. I'm not actually sure what my favorite Beatles song is any more. I've had a few.
  20. There was a thread, but I don't think there's been any activity in it for a few weeks. The only thing I'll warn you about the PC version is to be careful with your installs, because you only get 3 installations with the current Securom protection. Period; uninstall doesn't matter, and hardware reconfigurations can cause problems too. As to the game itself, I played it for 360 and loved it. As soon as I get it back from the friend I lent it to, I'll give it another playthrough as a different class.
  21. Lakers have officially given up. They all just kind of stood there and watched Allen drain that three.
  22. I don't get what the Pitchfork reviewer (Amanda Petrusich, I think?) was on about. Score's fine, but her chief complaint seemed to be that it fell off in the second half. I kind of think the exact opposite. The rhythm section is really foregrounded here and sounds great. Very pleased with this one.
  23. This is awesome.
  24. "Peyton throwing to him" is pretty close to the worst argument I've ever heard regarding football.
  25. I heard "Put On" for the first time Saturday night. It's awesome. I don't really have any favorite albums from this year yet. I rarely do by this point--haven't heard enough, haven't heard enough in-depth. I like No Age and Times New Viking on a few listens. A few songs off both the Crystal Castles and M83 albums are great. I have the Fuck Buttons album but haven't listened to it all the way through yet. And I haven't bothered to listen to Portishead or Wayne or way too many things. Extremely high hopes for today's Wolf Parade release, though. The new songs they played live last August were kind of stunning.
