They had to do something. A team that could have won 90 games last year had they had a decent bullpen shouldn't be on pace to lose 90 games the next year (I'd assume, I haven't really looked into it, but it's been a horrible season) with basically the same roster. It's not his fault that Wells, Delgado, and Halladay have all underachieved and been injured, but even if you go back to last year, his team had the best pitcher and 2nd best player (according to the award voting) and only finished in 3rd place.
