Anyway we can get conference standings or something? Granted, they prob. mean little in college football but it'd be nice to know being 2-2 how many games I'd need to surpass the leader/get an outside bowl shot.

    WWF/E Tidbits from the past

Knowing the man love that the DVDVR guys have/had for the Hardys' OMEGA promotion... I found it interesting that they could've played the new generation of jobber roles if the WWF had continued with the jobbers into 1999/2000. From 1996-1997 the following OMEGA wrestlers were featured on TV: Matt Hardy (Surge), Jeff Hardy (Willow The Whisp), Marty Garner (Cham Pain), Jason Ahrndt (Venom later Joey Abs... many argue he could've been the best of the group), and Steve Corino. This makes me curious if we would've eventually seen Shane Helms (Kid Vicious), Shannon Moore (Kid Dynamo), or Helms' tag partner Mike Maverick.

    NFL Week 3

Broncos open up offense Denver leads NFL in yards gained, points scored By Frank Schwab (Colorado Springs) Gazette Thursday, September 18, 2008 ENGLEWOOD -- Mike Shanahan hasn't started wearing hoodies with the sleeves cut off like coaching counterpart Bill Belichick, but the Denver Broncos have borrowed some ideas from the New England Patriots. For those who figured the Broncos' offensive attack looked a little like last year's Patriots, with spread formations and a lot of passes, you'd be right. "We really liked what the Patriots were doing with some of their empty sets," quarterback Jay Cutler said, referring to some offseason study. "We've got similar weapons with our guys, with our tight ends and our backs are able to get out. "Offensively we kind of matched up with what they were doing and we thought we might put it in, and it's working so far." There's little doubt about the success. The Broncos are 2-0 and lead the league in yards gained and points. The Broncos have passed the ball at a surprising rate. Cutler threw 50 passes on Sunday against San Diego, which tied a franchise record. The 2007 Patriots were the highest-scoring offense in NFL history and asking the Broncos to duplicate their numbers would be absurd. But Denver thinks the wide-open style fits their personnel, and quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates has gotten a lot of credit for his aggressive plan. "Jeremy is doing a heck of job play-calling, changing things up," Shanahan said. Cutler said the Broncos also studied the Steelers, Chargers, Cowboysand this week's opponent, the Saints, who are all pass-heavy teams. "This is a copycat league and everyone looks at everyone, everyone takes plays and tweaks them here and there a little bit," Cutler said. The Broncos have averaged 4.9 yards per carry running the ball, but have been most effective when throwing. In the third quarter against San Diego the Broncos didn't get a first down. They were a little more conventional that quarter, especially in the second series when they ran twice, threw a short screen and punted. The fourth quarter was back to being wide open, including many empty sets in which Cutler lined up in a shotgun formation and had nobody with him in the backfield. In two fourth-quarter drives the Broncos picked up 12 first downs and 146 yards. Denver has the personnel to employ a pass-heavy offense. The receiving corps is deep enough that Keary Colbert, a high-priority free-agent signee this offseason, was traded to Seattle on Tuesday. Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Brandon Stokley and Darrell Jackson are the top four, and Tony Scheffler is a talented tight end. Stokley was on a great passing offense in Indianapolis from 2003-06, with Pro Bowlers Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. "I think, from top to bottom, receiving corps-wise, we're better than when I was with Indy," Stokley said. "We've got a lot of depth at receiver, a lot of good players. I wouldn't trade Eddie and 'B-Marsh' for anybody else right now in the league." The Broncos also have an offensive line that has allowed only one sack, and that was credited as a team sack to San Diego when Cutler fumbled on a disputed call late in Sunday's game. No matter what the Broncos' record is this season, their offense should be fun to watch from beginning to end. "Tight ends, offensive line, quarterback, from top to bottom we've got what it takes to keep this up and have a great offensive year," Stokley said. Will be interesting if the Broncos can keep up this success and if they do, how many teams it carries over to later this season or next season.

    The NFL All-Time Draft

In my voting, I pictured Watters as a COP back to come in on 3rd down because he's an underrated blocker and a solid enough receiver (three seasons of 60+ catches and had back to back seasons with 9.7 YPR). I liked Larry Centers but come on, VX... he completely pales to Watters as a runner (LC topped 70+ carries in only 4 seasons) and his YPR was atrocious more often than not around 7.3-7.7. Watters displayed durability as a runner and was a consistent threat to get 8+ yards per catch. Jim Brown & Faulk are essentially a wash. Jim Brown was incredibly underrated as a receiver (Peak getting 40+ catches and 11.0 or 11.2 yards per catch) and Watters would offset Brown's woeful blocking ability on 3rd downs. If you look at just the yard per carry and yard per catch, they essentially are equal. As for McNabb, people forget how good he can be when given enough weapons. In 2000 he had 25 TD vs. 12 INT with 629 yards rushing (7.3 YPC). In 2004 he had 31 TD vs. 8 INT with a 5.4 YPC. As for the quote... keep in mind that every team has a "star" studded defense and even the best defenses have given up points and yards. The fact that he has a very good defense as do you essentially washed out leaving me to compare the offenses. Just so happened I preferred his.

    The NFL All-Time Draft

EHME - Has really adept speed at RB and WR and Donovan McNabb can scramble well. Not sure if I see Vitamin X's defense keeping up and dealing with the sheer force of Jim Brown after the speed of Ricky Watters. I also think EHME has a really well set up defense getting a rush from Peppers & Page while stopping the run with Ted Washigton, Joyner, and Banks. 909 - People forget Barry Sanders lost yards (notorious for that too) and that defense will just slaughter him. I'd predict 20 yards if he were lucky. I also like the size of his defense to match up against Sharpe and Monk while the offense can just rely on Campbell and Alstott as bulldozers. Kahran Ramsus - Really tough match. The power combo of Payton/Taylor coupled with the speed of Smith will challenge Bored's defense (even with LT and Sam Mills). Also Fran Tarkenton as scrambler will defuse some of the blitzing/stunting from the D. I also like his secondary to stop Moss & Carmichael leaving Sanders as the main threat and leaving the DL/LBs to generate pressure and keep Moore in for protection. TheOriginalOrangeGoblin - Really strong team with a quick pass rush (Freeney) and an underrated team to stop the run game. The pass game isn't the strongest on the receiver side of things but Franco can help add punishment to guys like McMichael and Lanier. Not sure the speed of Thomas/O.J. can beat out the sheer power of OOG's defense.

AWA Wrestling back on the air

First time I've caught the AWA on ESPN Classic... Live Thoughts/Comments (12 PM airing). "Limp... Wrist... Larry. That's hard to say three times fast. I'm not sure on the connotation." Just great... Ron says it with a legit cluelessness of the meaning behind the sign. What amazes me is how "easy" old wrestling makes generating heat look vs. modern day wrestling. Zybysko stalls & stalls then gets hip tossed and body slammed and stalls some more for heat. Simple but effective. Also loved Larry holding the tights in the quick pins despite being in the headlock... just awesome subtleness and led to the held tights finish. Also loved the variance in weights (Larry Z graphic says 249 but ring announcer says 252). Must've eaten a few cheeseburgers before coming through the curtain. "Now with that size between somewhere 10 and 15 head" - Ron in relation to Boris Zhukov. Christ... you could quote this guy in the whole post. "6'3" or 4 or more..." - Lord James Blears in relation to Ali Khan. Oooh... Tag Titles: Buddy Rose & Doug Somers© w/Sherri Martel vs. Midnight Rockers. Sweet! From the Showboat Sports Pavilion. Hah... "Playboy" Buddy Rose = 217(?) Pounds according to the graphic. Glad they included the question mark for authenticity. More classic subtlness no longer seen in most wrestling as the two teams actually take a break to confer with their partners after Rose goes down to a victory roll for a close two count. Doug Somers openly laughing at Marty while holding a bloody Shawn by his hair a few feet away so Marty gets a good look at Shawn's crimson mask... awesome beyond telling. Also seeing Shawn's "comeback" up to the hot tag pretty much solely being right hands or lefts was fun. Crowd literally getting to their feet with Marty teasing punching Sherri on the apron was a great visual. Marty also sports an impressive crimson mask, possibly outdoing Michaels in that department. Mayhem at the end as the ref goes down... Somers drops Michaels stomach first on a chair outside and another ref comes in with Rose/Somers beating up on a prone Jannetty until Greg Gagne & Alan West come in for the save. Great to see the Midnight Rockers lying on the outside together both bloody and battered until Michaels surges and tries unsuccesfully to ambush Somers before Rose & Somers scramble away. Fun way to cap the show. Fun main event with punches largely being the whole match but used effectively. And to add fuel, Rose & Somers "broke" Jannetty's ribs in the carnage, awesome. Also Greg Gagne threatens Rose/Somers with the whole AWA coming after them if the Rockers aren't okay... did that ever happen? Would've been neat to see the heat generated with the whole federation turning against the Tag Champs for taking out the young scrappy babyface team.

You know I love the run & shoot but looking at last year's results, it looked like a mix of bad luck and poor defense (A Glanville staple at Hawaii). What bugs me about Portland State and most uses of the run & shoot is that they just don't run the damn ball enough. In their first win of the year, they threw it 61 times and their leading RB had 15 carries for 48 yards but scored 4 TD. In their loss to UC Davis, they threw it 51 times and their RB had 5 carries for 44 yards! You don't think he could've gotten maybe 15 carries? God forbid, even 20? What maddens me is that Davis with the Gamblers back in 1984 had his 2 RB average together 16 carries per game (18 Games) and it seems like to Glanville, June Jones, and others that to run the ball more than 15 times with their main RB is a sin and a deviation from the true idea of the offense. Look at Hawaii: They've played 3 games and their 4 main RB have combined for 53 carries (18) for 250 yards (4.72) proving that you can still run the ball within the run & shoot offense. They're averaging 83 yards on the ground. *Bashes Head*

I-AA Spotlight Games Jacksonville (2-1) @ UNC-Pembroke (2-1) #6 Delaware (1-1) @ #24 Furman (2-1) Maine (2-1) @ #2 Richmond (2-1) #12 South Dakota State (2-1) @ #8 Northern Iowa (1-1) Weber State (2-1) @ Sacramento State (2-1) #17 Elon (2-1) @ #16 Georgia Southern (2-1) NC A&T (2-1) @ Hampton (2-1) #1 Appalachian State (1-1) @ #5 James Madison (2-1) #13 Cal Poly (1-1) @ Northwestern State (2-1) I really don't like the pre-season polls in the I-AA division either and wish records would be a better indicator. Granted, Eastern Washington played two I-A teams and lost but they're 0-2 and ranked at #14. Elon and Georgia Southern are both 2-1 while playing I-AA opponents and yet are ranked 17th and 16th respectively. Early player spotlight... QB Liam Coen (Massachusetts): 61/96 (63.5%) for 826 yards and 9 TD vs. 1 INT. Listed at 6'2" and 225 lbs. QB Bryant Lee (Southern): 65/98 (66.3%) for 680 yards and 7 TD vs. 1 INT. Listed at 6'2" and 200 lbs. RB James Mallory (Central Connecticut State): 46 carries for 372 yards (8.09) and 2 TD. Listed at 5'10" and 200 lbs. WR John Matthews (San Diego): 14 catches for 294 yards (21.0) and 5 TD. Listed at 6'0" and 203 lbs. WR Ramses Barden (Cal Poly): 14 catches for 292 yards (20.9) and 3 TD. Listed at 6'6" and 227 lbs. Could be turned into a TE at the next level or play a Marques Colston role. Ryan Perriloux Watch: 33/54 (61.1%) for 274 yards and 4 TD vs. 2 INT. 24 carries for 102 yards (4.3) and 1 TD. Bobby Reid Watch: 33/64 (51.2%) for 372 yards and 2 TD vs. 3 INT. 40 carries for 44 yards (1.1) and 3 TD.

    NFL Week 3

New England should have a fairly easy victory this week.. Things I'm looking for 1: Can they score the touchdown instead of the field goal? 2: Can the defense make turnovers? It seems like every other week there's a surefire INT dropped by somebody (Merriweather comes to mind). 3: Can the passing game top 200 yards? I'd like to see Cassel prove that the pass game can be a threat in addition to the combination of rushing yards provided by guys like Faulk, Maroney, Morris, and Jordan.

Armchair Bookers:What if Austin couldn't wrestle...

A little bit of a late bump here... Again thinking more on the short term rather than through 1998. Quick Backstory Focus - Austin was the IC Champion at the time and was really in the midst of a full fledged feud with Owen & Bret. You had Shawn Michaels busting Undertaker with a steel chair, costing him the WWF Title. Davey Boy's the European Champion and it was announced at the PPV that he would face Michaels at One Night Only. There's still the Gang Warfare feud going on in the undercard along with Mankind & Triple H still going head to head. 1: Davey Boy as European Champion. This could've easily transitioned into a feud with Triple H over the title belt during October/November and keeps the Hart Foundation vs. DX feud going. Then if DBS follows Bret, you could transition to Triple H feuding with The Rock of the Nation, setting up a DX vs. Nation feud into 1998. 2: You have Austin as IC Champion. You can run what happened in real life with Sgt. Slaughter & Vince McMahon, generally with Austin threatening to wrestle but not being signed off. One interesting take could be to have Austin stripped of the title and have it be put up for grabs in a match between Owen Hart and say Ken Shamrock. Then you can push an Owen/Shamrock feud up to Survivor Series with Austin generally raising hell and being a nuisance to everybody in the IC Title scene. Maybe briefly transition Austin & McMahon hating each other (Possibly set up Austin as commish as granted by Linda?) and have that as a mainstay outside of the ring permeating through everything going on. 3: Bret Hart as WWF Champion. You have Austin effectively taken out of the picture and Bret will still walk out of his contract. One interesting scenario is that Bret refuses to job to Michaels but okays Mankind the next night on Raw. Bret & HBK wage war up to Survivor Series and Bret wins by DQ. The next night he loses the WWF Title to Mankind and we immediately get a match signed between HBK & Mankind for the Royal Rumble while Bret walks to WCW. Owen follows Bret because Vince blames him for Austin... therefore the IC Title is now firmly on Shamrock. Then you could set up a Shamrock vs. Faarooq feud over the belt. 4: You keep the feud going between HBK and Undertaker up to the Royal Rumble with Bret/HBK as the feature feud while Undertaker is constantly around the two because of what happened at Summerslam. Undertaker runs in on the WWF Title match (thus the Bret/Mankind match on Raw) and we get to keep the DX history by making reference to Triple H/HBK teaming up against Undertaker & Mankind. You could also keep the Undertaker/Mankind feud going into the Fall. So at quick glance... Survivor Series European Title: Davey Boy Smith© vs. Triple H Vacant IC Title: Owen Hart vs. Ken Shamrock #1 Contendor to WWF Title: Undertaker vs. Mankind WWF Title: Bret Hart© vs. Shawn Michaels Royal Rumble European Title: Triple H© vs. The Rock IC Title: Ken Shamrock© vs. Faarooq WWF Title: Mankind© vs. Shawn Michaels w/Undertaker as Special Guest Referee Now you have a great set up into and through 1998 with Degeneration X vs Nation of Domination vs. Mankind & Undertaker & Ken Shamrock while you have Steve Austin vs. McMahon on the side. You could also insert Kane into the Mankind/Undertaker rivalry. It won't be as money making, however, I think it has the potential to be better all around and allow for 8-10 characters to get a ton of face time (Triple H, HBK, Undertaker, Mankind, Shamrock, The Rock, Faarooq, Kane, Steve Austin, and Vince McMahon).

Bret's first Main Event) 1992-11-25 (Survivor Series): Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels (WWF Champion vs. IC Champion. First "notable" singles match on PPV b/w them) 1994-01-22 (Royal Rumble): Bret Hart & Owen Hart vs. Quebecers (Tag Titles. Underrated gem as a match. Owen's heel turn) 1994-03-20 (WrestleMania 10): Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (Notable first one on one match) 1994-07-11 (Monday Night Raw): Bret Hart vs. 1-2-3 Kid (WWF Title. Just a very solid "typically great" Bret match) 1994-08-29 (Summerslam): Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (WWF Title Steel Cage) 1994-11-23 (Survivor Series): Bret Hart vs. Bob Backlund (WWF Title. Great stipulation and fabulous job of bringing 70's style to the modern era) 1995-01-22 (Royal Rumble): Bret Hart vs. Diesel (WWF Title. Chaotic "teaser" match to their one at Survivor Series) 1995-03-27 (Monday Night Raw): Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart (No Holds Barred. The "unwritten" end of their feud) 1995-09-24 (In Your House 3): Bret Hart vs. Jean Pierre Lafitte (The prototype for a Bret Hart "carry" match) 1995-11-19 (Survivor Series): Bret Hart vs. Diesel (WWF Title. Early pre-cursor to the Attitude Era in terms of match style) 1995-12-27 (In Your House 5): Bret Hart vs. Davey Boy Smith (WWF Title. A real bloody bout and a good antithesis of sorts to their Summerslam match)
