I'm listening to Side One right now. It sounds a lot like Discipline-era KC, though a little more "21st century," I guess. The lack of Fripp's guitar sets it apart, of course; Belew's voice is nowhere near as manic as it was a quarter century ago, but I'm sure age has something to do with that. I'm digging it so far, but I dunno how it'll hold up. Plus, in a live setting, this sounds like it could easily turn into jam band nonsense. edit: I should note that he'll be playing a venue that usually books jam bands. Hence, my concern.

No clue. His website is no help, either. As for his solo work, I d/l'ed the three albums he released in the last year or two (Side One, Side Two and Side Three) last night, though I've yet to listen to any of them.

Adrian Belew is playing here in August. I've never listened to any of his solo work.

When I saw the Shins a few years back, it was the keyboardist who did all the talking and wisecracking, not the singer. And I liked them well enough live, but they pretty much played their stuff as it was on record; it was like putting their discography on shuffle and turning the volume up really loud.

Bowie had a huge influence on this; Transformer was the beginning of Reed's short-lived glam phase. Not too long ago, I said in some other thread that I can't really listen to solo Lou Reed anymore, this album included. Reed was more concerned about image than music on this one; yeah, he did get some good songs in there—"Walk on the Wild Side," "Viscious" and, of course, "Perfect Day"—at least. The bulk of the album, however, is shallow.

I used to hate Paul McCartney (well, I still sorta do, but anyway), as I get older I can accept that his post-Beatles work—particularly McCartney and Ram—had its moments. I think I've talked about this here before, but much of the ire you people (myself included) would direct at Paul was due to him not dying/being murdered years ago. John Lennon became something of a martyr back in 1980; for that, he's unassailable, an idol. Nevermind that what solo work he produced was as spotty as Paul's. Nevermind John, by many accounts, was an egomaniacal asshole. His life was taken from him. That was enough to get him on license plates.

I'm unable to decide if I prefer Roxy Music's version of "Jealous Guy" because I think it's better or because I have a massive man crush on Bryan Ferry. Both versions are good, regardless.

Sentimental reasons aside (all of which are Wes Anderson-related, natch), hating "Oh Yoko!" is like hating sunshine and happiness and puppies. Maybe that's an overstatement, but the point is there. Lennon's exuberance is genuine and pretty infectious. Good song all around. The song preceeding it, "How?," completely passed me by. Let me go back and listen to it. ... wtf is this, Ram?
