Kill Bill Vol. 1 Uncut~! - ****1/2 the japanese uncut version is not only in color all the way through but has some other vicious new shots in it (during the anime sequence, for example). Cool stuff. -

Monster The acting is wonderful and deserves the hype, shame that the actual story isn't that interesting. ***1/2 -

Intolerable Cruelty A good romantic comdy with an edge, but I expect more from the Coen Brothers. ***1/2 Shiri Very good Korean action thriller. Everything I want to see in a big blockbuster movie, and probably shot with a fraction of a normal Hollywood budget. The acting was good, too. Really nice. **** -

Kaena - The Prophecy Mediocre french CG movie with a cute main character but not much else. ** -

The Storm Riders - **1/2 This could have been good as an anime, but these CG effects look really stupid in a real movie. The story was predictable. It has Sonny Chiba and some cool fights and scenarios though. -

Haute Tension, aka Switchblade Romance
Insane Bump Machine replied to Downhome's topic in Television & Film
watched it yesterday and loved it. The TCM comparison is dead on, some of the scenes can even be seen as a hommage to the classic. Edit: Downhome, if you're looking for subtitles check out http://www.extratitles.to (and http://subs.2ya.com for asian flicks). -

Batman Returns - *** Better than Schumacher's crap, but not as good as the first. Mask of the Phantasm and Return of the Joker remain my favorite bat movies. -

Basic - ** too many plot twists, and the story still manages to be boring as well. Travolta and Jackson are wasted. Changing Lanes - ***1/2 now this is more like it. Great script and fine acting, even by Affleck. It drags a bit, though. Haute Tension (aka Switchblade Romance in the US) - **** Wow, sick stuff here. A definite recommendation for all horror and gore fans. Loved the nods to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I'm not sure if I like the plot twist yet, I guess I'll watch it again soon. -

Komm, süsser Tod (Come Sweet Death) - ***1/2 wow, same rating again. Funny Austrian crime comedy, some brilliant scenes but overall not as good as I expected. Hinterholz 8 and Indien were funnier. -

Kung Pow! Enter The Fist - ***1/2 I love kung-fu movies, and I love this movie. It's not a cinematic masterpiece or anything, but it's hilarious all the way through. The dubbing of his dog and the mole-chaku are my favorite parts. The Spy Who Loved Me - ***1/2 Good Bond film, even though I think that Moore isn't serious enough in some scenes (a common problem with his Bond). The music and Jaws are great stuff. -

Brother Bear - ***1/2 Surprisingly moving story and beautiful art, but during many scenes I had the feeling that I had already seen them in other Disney movies. It's just too by-the-numbers sometimes. And too much music. But still a nice film, too bad that Disney has decided to abandon hand-drawn animation for now. -

The Boston Strangler - 8/10 A serial killer movie with Henry Fonda, George Kennedy and Tony Curtis? I'm there baby! Curtis gives the performance of a lifetime as the psychotic killer, and the split screen stuff is very cool. It dragged a bit during the interrogation scenes in the mental hospital, but the final sequence more than makes up for that. Great film. -

Dirty Harry - 7/10 Good, very slick police thriller. The 70's style and music makes it look almost like a Tarantino movie now. Eastwood is great. The Rundown - 6/10 It's a nice little action comedy. Nothing more, nothing less. The Rock has potential, but needs that one big hit to really get his career going. Sean William Scott should do more action movies instead of pure comedies, I really liked his work here.
