  1. I stand behind the theory that Terry Taylor and Dick Slater are the same person
  2. I believe that was Carl LeDuc, who is the son of Paul LeDuc and kayfabed newphew of Jos LeDuc. He did some WWF house shows in 96. http://www.bodyslamming.com/other/carlleduc.html He's not dead as far as I know.
  3. The Powers of Pain were gone from the WWF in early 1992. I think in Warlord's case it definately had something to do with the steroid testing. Barbarian showed up in WCW that spring and was one-half of the last US Tag Team Champions alongside Greg Valentine. He then had a brief main event push against Ron Simmons that fall and was pushed down the roster late 92/early 93 and left again. A few years later, Barbarian & Warlord showed up on the 1/1/96 Nitro as the masked "Super Assassins", managed by Col. Parker, and were squashed by Sting & Luger. Berzerker left the WWF in 1993 and showed up ... I want to say around 97/98 as John Nord.
  4. The Nastys' last TV appearance: WWF @ Tucson, AZ - Convention Center - April 6, 1993 WWF Superstars taping: 5/8/93 - featured a closing segment in which Raymond Rougeau interviewed Giant Gonzalez and Harvey Wippleman regarding Gonzalez' KOTR Qualifying match with Tatanka the following week: Mr. Hughes, WWF Tag Team Champions Ted Dibiase & IRS defeated Kamala (w/ Slick) & the Nasty Boys when IRS pinned Kamala with a roll up at 7:36 after Kamala became distracted after hitting the splash on IRS but not realizing he had to roll him over onto his back They were on WCW TV by August and won the belts a month later.
  5. I might know them by face but not by name.
  6. I was there all day covering Les Thatcher's EPWT training camp for the Shelby Star newspaper. Got there at 8:45 a.m. as they were setting up the ring. Spoke to Les before things got underway and thanked him for an interview he gave me a few weeks back to preview the camp for the paper. He shared with me the fact that Al Snow and Mick Foley apparently have some very comical answering messages, ex: "Hi, my name is Al and I ask that you speak very slowly and articulately as I have sustained many chair shots." Steamboat seemed a little distant. I thought about initiating conversation, outside of simply introducing myself, but what exactly do you say? "Hi, you're really freaking awesome" ? I will say one thing, the trainers were really nice to me during the relatively brief time I spent with them. I appreciated that. The trainees were very cool as well. I guess once they realize I'm not some stupid reporter and that I actually know what I'm talking about, they're fine talking to me. There was one point where Ricky was talking with some of the trainees before the camp got underway and he complained about being banged up and getting old. I said "Well, it beats the alternative." "What's that?" he asked. "Well ... being dead." I got a laugh out of it. "I guess I'm 2/3rds of the way there." In the ring, Steamer told a story about how when you have a man in a headlock and he lands a few elbows ... don't create a gap between yourself and your opponent, keep him close if you're going to break the hold. He told a story once of being in the ring with a heel and when the headlock became too lose, the heel took Ricky's arms off of him, mouthed a yawn, and then put the hold back on himself. My jaw dropped at that. Oh, and if you were wondering, yes Ricky did teach the guys how to work heel. It was surreal. I got Steamer to sign my WrestleMania III poster, which he took some interest in. I think he stared at it for a good 30 seconds. Got Terry Taylor to sign my Survivor Series 89 poster, which he signed "Rooster" - even drew a little rooster pic with the autograph. I met Quentin Michaels from Deep South. Really nice guy. He knew my name from The History of WWE (big compliment). We got to chatting about how Deep South is going, some general stuff about Johnny Ace, and what it's like working for WWE. He did some managing on that night's card. The show that night started really late for some reason. I heard around 8 p.m. - "There's a lockerroom full of guys and no one knows the line up." The card lasted until 11:30, at which time I myself was ready to head home. Matches were good and I was impressed with some of the trainees that worked the show. The standout was probably the X-division gauntlet match featuring Chris Hamrick, Chase Stevens, Caprice Coleman, and about 7 others ranging in size and experience. Hamrick pulled off some great highspots including a standing backflip powerslam off the top. Hamrick was the star of the match but Stevens pinned Caprice to get the win. The show ran so late that the Taylor/Prichard vs. Armstrong/Horner bout lasted all of 20 seconds. The heels come out, Taylor says "Cut the music and lets get this thing started" - which immediately made me catch on that they were short on time. The babyfaces come out, a quick brawl erupts, and before you know it the match is over. No one booed the quick finish, most just laughed. Lots of fun and I hope Matt Holder did good enough business to come back soon. I think it drew just over 200 according to what I saw reported on Wrestling Observer.com. I had a blast spending the day just listening to Les Thatcher, Terry Taylor, Ricky, Dr. Tom, and Tracy Smothers give pointers in the ring. I've never had a desire to get into the ring but I can listen to those guys talk all freaking day.
  7. I spent all day Friday at the Shelby Rec Center in Shelby, NC where Ricky Steamboat, Tracy Smothers, Terry Taylor, Les Thatcher, and Tom Prichard were holding an all day wrestling camp, with students coming in as far away as Boston and Vegas. I'll be back later with some very in-depth and entertaining stories on the camp and the show that followed but I just wanted to quickly pass along some of the coverage I put together for the Shelby Star (my employer). A brief overview: http://www.shelbystar.com/portal/ASP/artic...ew.asp?ID=21497 A profile on one of the students at the camp: http://www.shelbystar.com/portal/ASP/artic...ew.asp?ID=21522 The dominant photo of yesterday's paper: http://images.snapfish.com/346359638%7Ffp3...C2%3C%3A9nu0mrj Video footage of the drills (again, not taken by me): http://www.shelbystar.com/video/February/p...stling_0001.wmv If you read the articles and think "This could be much, much longer" - I agree. But the paper has this new strict policy of short and to-the-point stories that don't "jump" to another page later in the paper. I could easily have written a book on the camp if given the chance.
  8. Summer Slam gets my vote simply for the atmosphere and finish. And for the fact I credit that match for making me a fan. The Summer Slam finish made more sense. Bulldog hits the powerslam ... 2 count ... Bret gets Davey in the Sharpshooter, Davey reaches the ropes. They trade a few near falls and then - BAM - the 3 count. I didn't care for the IYH finish. Seemed anti-climatic in the sense that the match didn't seem like it was ready to be over and the Oklahoma side roll, while rarely seen at the time, didn't have that "OMG, here comes the 3 count" feeling to it.
  9. Foley. While he was announced as a participant in the 1998 Rumble (as Cactus Jack), he returned later on as both Mankind and Dude Love. His second surprise appearance was 2004.
  10. Blonde and he was big enough that he had to push the driver's seat back to fit.
  11. I timed it as 1:01:10. Flair's, the previous year, was 59:31. Backlund's record stood until 2004 when Benoit broke it with 1:01:34. Then Rey broke that with 1:02:15.
  12. Mike Nice is lord and savior of handhelds. I used to have a copy and aquired it from him. http://www.crazymax.org/profile.php?mode=v...7a75d4756aaa43e He used to have a site, and still might, but I don't recall the url.
  13. I believe it was the other way around. The attack from Earthquake was a way to kayfabe why he had the crutches.
  14. It was basically just him standing in the corner while his tag partners did all the work.
  15. He actually showed up twice on Raw, once as a guest of King's Court and the following week to be in Bret Hart's corner against Jeff Jarrett.
  16. Gorilla and Andre were babyface, Hogan was heel. It wasn't unusual at that time to have biased babyface guest referees like Monsoon or Chief Jay Strongbow. I don't understand the logic in that but whatever. I doubt Hogan was looked at as the future of the company a full 4 years before he got the belt. He was just a top heel.
  17. Benoit broke that record in 04.
  18. Royal Rumble 06 - Miami, FL - American Airlines Arena - January 29, 2006 (16,178; sell out) Sunday Night Heat - featured footage from after the Miami Heat game Thursday night in which Shaquille O'Neal hit Carlito Caribbean Cool in the back with a steel chair as Carlito bad mouthed the Heat for losing the game, with both Shaq and Carlito sharing their comments on the incident: Finlay pinned Brian Kendrick with the Emerald Frosien at 2:08 Pay-per-view bouts - featured Joey Styles & Jerry Lawler on commentary for the Raw matches and Michael Cole & Tazz on commentary for the Smackdown! bouts, with Cole & Lawler on commentary for the Rumble match itself; included a backstage confrontation between Triple H and Randy Orton as both men selected their entry numbers for the Rumble match; featured a backstage segment in which the Big Show & Rey Mysterio Jr. picked their numbers; included a backstage segment in which Shelton Benjamin and WWE Smackdown! 20. That's a Scott Keith story. They fought more than once.
  21. I'm not sure I understand that logic. Lots of times wrestlers job on TV before going over in big matches at the PPV. Agreed. If anything, it sets up the victor as the logical #1 contender. I'm betting the farm on Orton this Sunday - not that I WANT him to win, I just think that's the direction they're going. So for him to beat Benoit ... well, it would only hurt Benoit and it wouldn't help Orton THAT much. So it makes more since to have Benoit go over clean and then set up a PPV match between the two later down the line - perhaps at No Way Out - where Benoit can be seen as a viable threat.
  22. Really? I noticed the purse searching but no one bothered me with the metal detector treatment. I agree that it took forever to get in. I didn't show up until about 6:25, and the doors were supposed to open at 6:30. I don't think they did until nearly an hour later.
  23. 1) The first win was the day after the 93 KOTR at a Wrestling Challenge taping. No clue why it was never televised. The other switches were at house shows that week. 2) Yes. LOD won all the matches. 4) Several dozen times. If you want to know the specific results, try 1991 and 1992.
  24. Brad Attitude is a local Indy talent. He's worked several Carolina Championship Wrestling cards over the past year or so.
  25. I believe that was Scott Keith.
