Steve Tambellini named Oilers GM, Kevin Lowe moved to different position
Scotty Bowman joins Blackhawks as adviser
Bowman leaving is surprising but I guess he wanted a challenge (and more likely the chance to work with his son).
Why is it that the better the Shield gets the less nominations it sees? Seriously, Walton Goggins is long overdue for at least a nomination. If they missed the nomination period that's one thing but otherwise it is getting criminally overlooked. And Jesus Christ Boston Legal, enough already. James Spader better not win again (Michael C. Hall should win but Jon Hamm and Hugh Laurie are probably the front runners).
So Gobblin isn't here and he asked me to make his pick for him, which is:
Evgeni Nabokov, G
208 wins
40 shutouts
2.37 career GAA
Calder Trophy winner, 2001
Two time all-star
World Championship gold medalist, 2008
Vezina Trophy finalist, 2008
Couldn't agree more with everything you said. I was really surprised they resigned Lilja instead of giving one of the younger guys a shot, unless it was for insurance as you said. And if getting rid of Sammy means more playing time for Helm (or any of their forward prospects for that matter) I'm all for it. Kopecky was also looking pretty solid right before he got hurt so I'd hang on to him to see if he continues his development. And if either Downey or McCarty (or both) take two way deals they should be brought back as well.
To fill out my fourth line, I'm going to take a guy with solid two way play and a knack for scoring clutch goals (including a Cup winner):
Bob Nystrom, RW
235 goals
278 assists
513 points
1248 PIM
Four Stanley Cup championships
All Star, 1977
Trevor Linden, C
375 goals
492 assists
867 points
Two time all star
Member of 1998 Canadian Olympic team
King Clancy Trophy winner, 1997
Named captain of Canucks at age 21
Decent enough for a fourth line center.
So far it's pretty much the order I picked them in but I'll most likely make some changes.
