I think it's unbelievable the Mets/Santana discussions are coming down to the wire like this. According to Jayson Stark, they're supposedly close to a 6-year, $152-million deal.

He becomes a free agent at the end of the season. They could either trade him now and get back some talent in return, or hold onto him for a season in which they have no shot of making the playoffs anyway and then lose him to free agency without getting anything back. He also implied he would invoke his no-trade clause all throughout the 2008 season if they didn't trade him before spring training. Common sense tells me this is typically how negotiations go, and no way would Minaya let an opportunity like this pass him up, no matter the cost. But as someone who has seen the Mets front office fumble things before....well, I'm cautious.

With ESPN.com claiming that the Mets and Santana aren't even close to an agreed extension yet, my blood pressure is going to be skyrocketing until tomorrow. When you're this close to acquiring the best pitcher in the game, you give him whatever he wants. Six years? Sure. 20 million? No problem. Minaya's first-born son? You got it.

Indiana Basin Silt Region 1. Milky -- just can't be stopped, it seems. Not yet, at least. 6. KKK -- now I like Dr. Venkman, and I've always voted for him. But for a long time, kkk was one of the only reasons I even ventured into the Current Events folder. Plus I have gotten some enjoyment out of his blog in the past. I feel he should make it far. Help, I'm a Rock Region 4. King -- look, I'm sure Kamala's a good guy, but he seems like the typical bland, unspectacular snuffbox-like poster we see so often around here. Probably not. 3. El Dandy -- I've become a fan. VX is good people too but his refusal to eat red meat makes me question just how much he wants to win this tournament. Powderfinger Region 5. Edwin MacPhisto -- tough but he just stands out to me more. Lushus, I consider you one of the better Pit posters, so take that as a consolation prize. 2. Al Keiper -- I really considered giving my vote to Smues here because I find the whole "not voting based on policy" stance to be so weak. But ultimately, Al does offer more to the board as far as the Sports folder, so he gets my vote based on that.
