  1. The intent of the contract is to give him a shot at the rotation. But that spot isn't guaranteed.
  2. Kris Benson signed a minor league deal with the Phillies. I hope Anna finds Allentown PA to her liking.
  3. I really doubt Around the Horn was conceived as a way to fairly rate columnists by points.
  4. I get the feeling people are just running with the emotions they already had, and are using something in the hearings to support it. Pro-Clemens people think he looked better than McNamee. Anti-Clemens people (Czech) think it confirms the "fraud" opinion they've held for years. It took two years to get a perjury indictment against Bonds. The case against Clemens isn't enough to fill a book, it is the statement of the guy who supplied the HGH, and maybe Andy Pettitte. The stuff Brian McNamee supplied, the syringes and such, will not hold up in court.
  5. Mets' current top five prospects are Martinez, Kunz, Brant Rustich, Jon Niese and Nate Vineyard. All are pitchers except Martinez. A first baseman named Mike Carp is the only position prospect above A ball that they have. Dodgers you have Andy LaRoche (3B), Chin-Lung Hu (SS).
  6. There's a difference between a reaction and serious reaction. I take insulin injections three times a day, sometimes the after-effects are uncomfortable. It does not cause me to immediately call a doctor. Generally if something causes itching and discomfort, a person will wait a day or two before seeking medical attention. That's fine. If your spouse KNEW what they were taking. Clemens claims he didn't know she took an HGH shot and knows nothing about HGH. If your spouse was taking something behind your back that you didn't know anything about, you wouldn't immediately get medical attention, or at least advice? Come on. Look, you at least know what to expect with these insulin shots. Clemens claims to know NOTHING about HGH and the effects thereof. Well again, if you take something illegal, you probably aren't going to seek immediate attention unless it's a serious, serious issue.

  8. The big problem with DiBiase is that over the previous ten years, WWE spent about one month with a heel champion (three weeks of the Iron Sheik, one week of DiBiase before the title change was nullified). They did not want to run a heel champion for any length of time. An alternate card for WM IV could have been champion DiBiase against Savage, with Hogan/Andre non-title underneath.
  9. Since you live around New York City/New Jersey, I think the YES Network generally provides committed baseball coverage. Regional sport networks are well worth checking out, many have their own half hour news shows with a local tint. Any other opinions?
  10. I was saddened to learn there won't be an MVP 2008 this year. It is just as well. I refused to buy 2007 since they did not even update the rosters. They just transferred the '06 rosters to different teams in the '07 game.
  11. I listened to a fair bit of the hearings while running my errands. Everyone is really coming off bad here. McNamee got raked over the coals for lying to investigators in previous incidents. Clemens is going to get buried under the lies, as another poster states. If you watch the committee members, you can tell which side they are on based on the questions they ask. About three or four of them obviously have their minds made up. It is hard to feel bad for Clemens. He did not need to take on this challenge, and he is going to lose out in the end. But I still find it disconcerting that individual athletes are vilified in these scandals. Steroid problems extend far beyond Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds.
  12. Pitchers and catchers begin reporting tomorrow. I picked up Baseball America's Prospect Guide, good read as always. I'm amazed at the number of prospects who changed hands since the book went to the printer. I'm also real tempted to go back to EA Sports' 2006 NCAA Baseball game. Dozens of players in that game are now names in the Majors and minors.
  13. I've seen enough. It's Uecker, u before e.
  14. I honestly don't remember. One of my political science professors observed that I have this wonderful trait of visibly tuning out idiocy, that I don't suffer fools gladly. So when he opened his mouth, I stopped listening.
  15. Of course, you had Elizabeth wearing a different outfit for every match.

  17. Couple general thoughts: 1. I should have asked about the New York Yankees receiving corporate tax breaks and land for their new stadium. If you think supporting the underprivileged is bad, supporting the privileged is much, much worse. 2. If you think this is bad, I had Political Science courses with Rob F'n Johnstone in college.
  18. Depends. Are you looking to become a writer, or promoter? How do you define the two? Writer: Someone who takes a hand in crafting the angles/promos in a show. Promoter: Person who sets up the show. In the latter case, I think people don't realize that 5% of the job is creating the matches and angles. Far more work is involved in renting the building, advertising, booking the talent, acquiring the applicable permits, etc.
  19. WWE.com's survey site lists a dvd called "The Greatest Superstars of Wrestlemania." Anyone heard anything on this?

  21. Bought the Austin dvd. The Dos Hombres match has one redeeming quality at least. Larry Zbyszko inventing new information about the cage match with Bruno Sammartino is comedy gold.
  22. NYankees was the comeback.
  23. Spotswood Poles was a small, swift player who began with the Philadelphia Giants in 1909 at the age of 19. He would go on to roam the Lincoln Giants' center field for the next ten years. Teammate Sam Streeter claimed that Poles could outrun "Cool Papa" Bell, regarded as the fastest player ever on the Negro leagues base paths. Shades of Glory, Lawrence Hogan
  24. Yeah, my local Kmart always has the new releases for $20 or less, including Pay Per Views.
  25. Since it would probably create a shitstorm if I did it, I figured I would put this in the hands of the board at large. Should we ban NYankees for sucking? Or keep him and consider him good entertainment. It's up to you!
