  1. It's mostly statistical white noise. When players accumulate massive amounts of at bats in "clutch" situations, their clutch statistics tend to mirror their career statistics. Although I'd be missing an opportunity if I didn't point out that with runners on base, Abreu is a career .330 hitter.
  2. Wheat's drafted. I could suggest a replacement, perhaps Gavy Cravath.
  3. I'm just explaning the statistic. Most people know I dislike the save statistic as well, since the same rules apply.
  4. Ok guys. Autopicks to close out the draft. Dr. Tom selects pitchers Dave Stewart, Curt Simmons, Charlie Hough and Jack McDowell and catcher Mike Scioscia. Bravesfan selects catcher Tony Pena, and pitcher Lou Burdette. And that closes out the draft. You guys can go ahead and discuss trades.
  5. Madson came in the game with Terrmel Sledge representing the tying run at home, bases loaded. When the potential tying run is at bat or on deck, it is a save situation, and hence in this case, a hold situation.
  6. "Hold." It is a statistic for middle relievers who entered the game in a save situation (up by three or less after the sixth inning), and did not collect the save, but left the game without surrendering the league. Tim Worrell did not get one because the Phillies had increased the lead to four when he entered.
  7. Yup. Vazquez was such a victim of pressure, he piched excellently in the first half, and sucked his first start out of the bright lights of New York.
  8. Lilly had a 120 ERA+ last year. And he wasn't traded for Clemens (David Wells was). He was traded for some guy named Weaver. Think the Yanks won that trade?
  9. Besides Wily Mo Pena, Nick Johnson and Eric Milton, there was D'Angelo Jimenez, Christian Guzman, Mike Lowell, Zach Day, Jake Westbrook, Damaso Marte and Ted Lilly.
  10. It was one loss. It's an extreme hitters' park, and Adam Dunn is one of the most fearsome power hitters in baseball. Come back from the ledge.
  11. And what do you know. The last twenty world series winners were 12-8 (.600) on Opening Day.
  12. It's reasons like this I love Opening Day. literally every team starts over anew and all the fans can be all happy because of just the first game's result or complain and grumble about how the season is a lost cause after just the first game. Al; you likely know this; what's the percentage rate for eventual WS winners winning opening day? It has to be an utterly meaningless statistic. Without looking (and I'll go back 20 years on this and check), it is probably within .05 percentage points of their average win/loss record over the course of a season.
  13. Maybe she hates Peter Angelos' guts Or she hates the Orioles in general. There was nothing positive about 1988 for the Orioles. Even Cal played like crap that season. That was an amazing team. The Orioles had TWO infielders fail to break a .270 slugging percentage.
  14. Absolutely. Injuries held down Kearns' production last year. When healthy, he can and will hit. He posted a .315/.407/.500 line at the age of 22.
  15. The idea is to place Kearns in between lefties, to make it harder on opposing managers.
  16. Picks Left: Dr. Tom (5 picks) The Man In Blak (1 pick) Cena's Writer (2 picks) Bravesfan (2 picks) Nogoodnick (1 pick)
  17. Final Pick: 2B Max Bishop
  18. Where? Eastern Europe and South America. Baseball is popular in all of Latin America, Asia, and the Netherlands. A substantial portion of their athletes come from Central America, and the asian contingent grows every year.
  19. Who is? Randy's a top 15 pitcher all time, maybe top 10.
  20. Kansas City @ Detroit (1pm ET, ESPN2) Josa Lima vs. Jeremy Bonderman NY Mets @ Cincinnati (2pm ET, ESPN) Pedro Martinez vs. Paul Wilson Chicago Cubs @ Arizona (5pm ET, ESPN2) Carlos Zambrano vs. Javier Vazquez Plus your local games. I'm watching the Nationals' debut today versus the Philadelphia Phillies. Should be a great day.
  21. #29: C Del Crandall
  22. Derrick Turnbow tested positive for steroids under the Olympic program two years ago. I think alot of people have misconceptions about what players are likely to use steroids. You might be more likely to see steroid use among players who are straddling the line between MLB and the minors.
  23. This seems as good a spot as any. We have a live baseball chat tonight at "TSMBaseball"
  24. This is one of those times that Win Shares comes in handy. Alex Sanchez played 101 games for the 2003 Detroit Tigers, who finished 43-119. If we assume Sanchez was on the 'roids, we must asterik his records (I don't support this, but play along). Sanchez earned six win shares, which works out to 2 wins for the Tigers. We place asteriks on those two wins, and all the sudden the Tigers lose 121 games, the most in history.
  25. Go ahead and start making round 30 picks. If you have picks remaining from earlier rounds, use them up. Let's finish this thing!! I'll wait a couple hours before making my picks.
