Since Marion and Stoudemire both have max deals, it makes sense that they would move one of them to clear up the books a bit. I don't think there are any teams that can flat out absorb the contract, but they probably want to move one of those guys for someone on short term money. Now, swapping Stoudamire for Garnett does nothing to alleviate their luxury tax problem. But if you can get Garnett you do it every time. They are very close to championship calibur and an elite player may push them over the top. It's a gamble they need take.
