the ronco electric food dehydrator infomercial hypnotized me when i was younger. i have no idea why, but every time i caught it on tv, i had to sit there and watch it till it was over. i do the same thing with his new machine now, even though that one isn't as good. it just doesn't have that special *i don't know what* that the electric food dehydrator had. a couple months ago i saw vanna white on an infomercial shilling a space-age toothbrush. that woman looks scary now from so much plastic surgery, i barely recognized her. oh how i long for her 'goddess of love' days.

i don't see any pulp on that list. i'm not a fan or anything, but they're pretty important. there needs to be something from 'who's next' as a who selection, even if it means taking "pinball wizard" off the list. "baba o'reilly" and "won't get fooled again" are both incredible tracks that sum the band up perfectly, take your pick. and this is just a matter of personal taste, but i'd put "street spirit" on as my radiohead track before "exit music." but i understand the reasoning for your pick, since 'ok computer' is a more important album and all.

You're stupid. Says the guy with the airbrushed Michelle Branch pic in his sig it's okay, i can do it: cartman, you're stupid.

^ that would be march 1895, the lumiere brothers' 'workers leaving the factory'.

i am AMAZED that 'paul's boutique' made that list. i was actually watching some of this on tv over the weekend (i switched it on about the time rage was being showcased), & thought it was supposed to be some kind of quasi-legitimate list. when i saw 'paul's boutique' at number 11 i was pretty excited. then when i saw number 10, my heart sank. i blame myself for being stupid enough to actually start having faith in an mtv list. and after i got over it, it was pretty funny seeing all these people talk about how 'hybrid theory' was cool and different because it mixed rock and hip-hop, when they were talking about rage half an hour ago.

it's REALLY hard to pinpoint what the "first" narrative movie was, but it wasn't 'the great train robbery'. george melies was making stuff like 'a trip to the moon' and 'cinderella' 1-4 years before GTR was made.

i've always had a soft spot for "o holy night." "carol of the bells" is great, but ONLY in instrumental form, without those dumbass lyrics on top of it.

the worst thread ever is, was and always will be the one when youdafoo started masturbating in the middle of the thread and told everyone about it. that was the ORIGINAL worst thread ever.

following that logic: if flair's arm is weakened, it's easier for steamboat to put him in the hold because flair can't fight out of the position as well. like bret hart working somebody's leg to set up the sharpshooter: the sharpshooter hurts the back, but bret needs his opponent's legs to be weak enough for him to set up the move. at the clash, steamboat was working the back, & the chicken wing was just done on the fly to further the back work: steamboat wasn't setting up for it. so if steamboat's not consciously working up to the chicken wing, it makes sense for him to work the back beforehand, since it does more damage to the back. if he IS working up to the chicken wing, it makes sense to work the arm, because that makes it easier for steamboat to set the move up.

i toss my hat in with the "something missing" camp. all those intangibles like flow, timing & pacing were just missing here, and it looked like they were going through the motions of a great match. the whole thing was very stop-and-start, like "okay, this is the part where i start doing _____, then you start doing ____"--it looked like they were trying to force the structure on to the match, & the points in the match didn't seem to build naturally from each other. in theory, yes, the transitions made sense, but the execution was poor. ever see a movie or a play where all the lines make sense, but the actors all sound like they're reciting lines, rather than really reacting to each other? same thing here. sorry i can't come up with any examples to back this up, but i don't have a copy of it in my collection & it's been a while since i've seen it; so all i can give is the vibe i got from the match. however, that final pedigree/crossface/repeat sequence is AWESOME.

cocker's "with a little help from my friends" is the "all along the watchtower" of beatles covers. michael jackson did a cover of "come together" that i really like for some reason. and stanley jordan does a jaw-dropping instrumental version of "eleanor rigby."

^ good one. i'm smacking myself up for forgetting that.

right, cause no one in the history of this message board has ever said that before.

your father still doesn't know your mother's phone number? EDIT: god damn 'south park' for temporarily distracting me & allowing someone else to make the same comment first.

this reminds me of around the time they were both debuting, & batista would face orton in the ring and SLAUGHTER him with a clothesline. it looked great, and it happened 2 weeks in a row on tv. then at a house show batista knocked orton out cold with a clothesline, & orton had to be helped to the back. this also reminds me of the minor smark uprising about brock lesnar being pushed down our throats, & batista being so protected and looking so impressive that some people were saying HE should've gotten the monster push instead of lesnar. good times. and i pick orton.

1. "sabotage" 2. "closer" 3. "street spirit (fade out)"--only seen it once & i barely remember anything from it, but it had quite an effect on me 4. "bedtime story"--closer lite, but i don't care 5. "pagan poetry"

unless marney comes in to post, this thread is officially useless and boring.

London Calling has been regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time for a long time - way before Joe Strummer kicked it. From where I sit, perhaps only Exile on Main St. manages to be as good as long and as consistently as London Calling. 'electric ladyland' and 'blonde on blonde' >>> 'exile' 'exile' has several weak points: "soul survivor," "tumbling dice" (which i think is totally unspectacular in every way possible), and some songs that, while overall are good, seem like they were just trying to stretch out a really good melody or guitar line to 3 or 4 minutes ("let it loose," "all down the line," "torn and frayed"). it's basically a 70-minute plus album with a little less than an hour's worth of ideas. as a whole, it works in stops and starts, & i don't find it any more consistent than the white album (whose high points are far better than anything on 'exile'). the flow of it stumbles at "let it loose," and it never builds up the energy that it had earlier. the last 3 tracks in a row just make me tired. 'electric ladyland' has 2 albums' worth of ideas, and explores all of them. i don't think "1983" could've been a second shorter, and the only unnecessary thing about the 15-minute "voodoo chile" is the long stretch of crowd noises at the end. even the tracks that seem like they should be throwaways ("rainy day...", "still raining...") are woven into the album in a certain way to keep it interesting, & the whole record never lets up. 'blonde on blonde' isn't really an album of ideas, but dylan keeps the whole thing compelling up to the end with so many great songs, and that run of the last 4 songs is amazing ("absolutely sweet marie," "4th time around," "obviously 5 believers," "sad-eyed lady of the lowlands"). compare it with the last 4 tracks on 'exile', and 'exile' doesn't stand a chance.

yes, it would be a busby berkeley-type musical. musicals have ACTION built around the SONGS. other movies with lots of music have SONGS built around the ACTION. 'everyone says i love you'. not a big fan of it, but i like the musical number tim roth (as a sociopath) does.

i'm proud to say my involvement with high school drama has never lead to seeing a dick up close. But, something else HAS led you to see a dick up close? college is expensive. don't judge me.

i'm proud to say my involvement with high school drama has never lead to seeing a dick up close. i have, however, seen oodles of tits, as most of the drama girls i knew would basically drop their shirts & make out with each other on command.

i just get straight black coffee, i don't fool with any of the latte/chai/frappucino shit. living in a college town, i have a LOT of coffee house options. i could go to jittery joe's, blue sky, favorite, espresso royale, starbucks, bulldog cafe, classic or infusia, all of which are within about 5 or 6 blocks of each other (and blue sky, classic & starbucks are all right NEXT to each other). i'm often on campus/downtown from 8 in the morning to 10 at night, so i'll often buy 3 or 4 cups of coffe a day. jittery joe's: they have a location inside the new "student learning center" and are making INSANE amounts of money from it, so they're the evil empire right now. their smallest size of coffee is $1.66, and there's ALWAYS coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup. no atmosphere. fuck them. blue sky: $1.50/cup, DAMN good coffee, good atmosphere with local artwork on the walls & a sound system that's always playing r.e.m., the pixies, or the velvet underground. comfortable furniture downstairs, i like to go there to write. woody, indie atmosphere. they have the coffee pots right there to pour yourself, which is convenient...unless you have to wait in a long line full of people getting these complicated 4 dollar drinks that take 5 minutes to fix, just so that the guy at the register can give you a cup. then it's frustrating. favorite: $1.34/cup, also very good coffee (but really strong; if i drink more than 2 cups of it i start to feel drunk). really nice, small place run by a local artist who used to do r.e.m. album covers i think. i have a soft spot in my heart for them, because all the people there know me & they let me shoot a video there. kind of art deco/indie atmosphere. espresso royale: never been there. maybe i will sometime next week. starbucks: been there maybe twice, never bought anything. i find the local places much more interesting. bulldog cafe: not really a coffee shop, more of a half-cafeteria where i sometimes get coffee. $1.07/cup, but it's REALLY shitty. classic: more of a food stand that happens to serve coffee. an amazing $.80/cup. not nearly as good as the real coffee that blue sky/favorite/joe's serves, but it's pretty damn good for ghetto coffee. the place itself is pretty ghetto too, and reminds me of the friends i had from high school who dropped out & live in squalor (i get that kind of vibe from the people who work at this place too). but it's perfect for when i need a cup to take to class, so i go here far more than anyplace else. infusia: only been there once, & their coffee was $1.87/cup. but the refills were free, i got a mint, & the furniture was incredibly nice. easygoing, tree-hugger/new age atmosphere. and i have no idea why anyone would want to read any of what i just typed. but if you're in athens, GA, just use it as a guide.
