But the portal doesn't close until the key stops being poured in it. The key is the mystical energy and the portal shouldn't have stopped until the mystical energy had stopped flowing into it.

I don't think that's what the writers intended. I think Buffy just found the loophole; Dawn was the carrier of the energy, and the expected solution would be to stop the flow of her blood, but I think the swandive into the portal sorta of end-arounded that. If the blood's the same, it gets Buffy's living blood, and one of the flows stops...that's the best I can give you, because it's been a long time since I've caught the details. I also wouldn't mind going back and looking through the principles of what the Primitive said. This is one of those spots in Buffy where it seems like the metaphorical and the literal become conflated; death is Buffy's gift, and it doesn't matter how she makes her sacrifice, as long as she does--it's what she has to offer in the face of this apocalypse. That's getting very meta-textual and what-not, but lords know I love it that way.

 

Thinking about "The Gift" makes me remember how well-plotted season 5 was. One of the best in terms of twists, turns, and excitements, and I just wished I had experienced it without having been indoctrinated to season 6 first.

I was thinking, if anybody notices minor things in Buffy episodes we could point them out to others who might've missed it. Here's my contribution...

 

- In "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", watch when Willow gives her speech outside the school, axe in hand as Xander's just saved Cordelia. She sheds a tear as she calls Cordelia a bitch.

 

If I notice any others, I'll try and post them.

Open on Buffy at the fireside. Throughout the ensuing scene we see the First Slayer through the flames, sometimes obscuring her entirely.

 

BUFFY: I know you. You're the first Slayer.

 

FIRST SLAYER: This is a form. I am the guide.

 

BUFFY: I have a few questions ... about being the Slayer. What about ... love? Not just boyfriend love.

 

FIRST SLAYER: You think you're losing your ability to love.

 

BUFFY: I-I didn't say that. (sighs) Yeah.

 

FIRST SLAYER: You're afraid that being the Slayer means losing your humanity.

 

BUFFY: Does it?

 

FIRST SLAYER: You are full of love. You love with all of your soul. It's brighter than the fire ... blinding. That's why you pull away from it.

 

BUFFY: (surprised) I'm full of love? I'm not losing it?

 

FIRST SLAYER: Only if you reject it. Love is pain, and the Slayer forges strength from pain. Love ... give ... forgive. Risk the pain. It is your nature. Love will bring you to your gift.

 

BUFFY: (pause) What?

Cut back to Buffy in the desert.

 

BUFFY: I-I'm sorry, I, I'm just a little confused. I'm full of love, which is nice, and ... love will lead me to my gift?

 

FIRST SLAYER: Yes.

 

BUFFY: I'm getting a gift? Or, or do you mean that, that I have a gift to give to someone else?

 

FIRST SLAYER: Death is your gift.

 

BUFFY: Death ...

 

FIRST SLAYER: Is your gift.

 

BUFFY: Okay, no. Death is not a gift. My mother just died. I know this. If I have to kill demons because it makes the world a better place, then I kill demons, but it's not a gift to anybody.

 

The First Slayer is obscured by the flames, following the contours of her body.

 

FIRST SLAYER: Your question has been answered.

XANDER: Why blood? Why Dawn's blood? I mean, why couldn't it be like a, a lymph ritual?

 

SPIKE: 'Cause it's always got to be blood.

 

XANDER: We're not actually discussing dinner right now.

 

SPIKE: Blood is life, lackbrain. Why do you think we eat it? It's what keeps you going. Makes you warm. Makes you hard. Makes you other than dead. (quietly) Course it's her blood.

 

BUFFY: Pretty simple math here. We stop Glory before she can start the ritual. We still have a couple of hours, right?

 

GILES: If my calculations are right. But Buffy-

 

BUFFY: I don't wanna hear it. (turns away)

 

GILES: I understand that-

 

BUFFY: (whirls back) No! No, you don't understand. We are not talking about this.

 

GILES: (jumps up from the table, yells) Yes, we bloody well are!

 

Beat. Everyone looks shocked by Giles' outburst.

 

GILES: (quieter) If Glory begins the ritual ... if we can't stop her...

 

BUFFY: Come on. Say it. We're bloody well talking about this. Tell me to kill my sister.

 

GILES: (whispers) She's not your sister.

 

BUFFY: (pause) No. She's not. She's more than that. She's me. The monks made her out of me. I hold her ... and I feel closer to her than ... (looks down, sighs) It's not just the memories they built. It's physical. Dawn ... is a part of me. The only part that I- (stops)

 

WILLOW: We'll solve this. We will. Don't have another coma, okay?

I thought that too. I thought you put it in there, and people will still be able to post in it. In that case, I don't think it will be in there anytime soon, season 4 on DVD is coming out soon so people will be talking about that for a while.

Sure, the show's over, but at least we've got a couple months of summer repeats.

 

I was still kind of a neophyte when I saw this episode, having only seen the really big moments from the previous seasons...so it'll be interesting to see if my middling opinion's changed.

Bah...I wanted to walk in on the last few minutes of the show and see the big bad rundown.

 

And I also just got Angel season 1 on DVD today. My WB station got dropped the night after the show debuted. So everything in season 1 after the first episode is new to me (with the exception of the cross overs, saw those on a friends tape)

Most of the season is case episodes, kind of like Law & Order type of deal.
