Wrestler of the Year?

Recommended Posts

Guest pappajacks

I feel that no one particular wrestler really broke out of the pack in 2002. Despite the current state of the WWE, there are a few wrestlers who had a strong year: Kurt, Eddie, Benoit, Brock and Jericho. Who do you feel was the best in 2002?

HHH.

Seriously, though, I'd have to say RVD. He's come so close to winning the World Title it's not even funny. Plus, I really enjoyed his matches against Eddie.

Male: I'd go with Kurt Angle. He started off strong, being a threat for the main event spot at WrestleMania...and he's ending the year strong, going for the Championship.

Female: Molly Holly. Not just because of blind faith...but because this was the year she built a strong character for a while, and finally got the Women's title. Though...I WOULD have liked if she stayed Mighty...

Nah. Eddy had better matches and he and Benoit carried more of the tag match, plus he got the better match out of Edge compared to the other two (though Benoit didn't get as much opportunity). Edge being the only real measuring stick, even taking away Eddy's edge of working in the indies, there's too much evidence that he was the stronger worker.

the sad thing is... i think Vince and the WWE would say HHH...

Well... I will say RVD.. even if he is now reduced to hosting parties at the World... i watched before then and he was awesome... next Id say Eddie G.

Jericho had a strong year this year? I must have watched the wrong shows...

Not a flame, by any means, but Chris had a pretty bad year after the Rock feud was over with.

Also, my vote goes to Eddy Guerrero. He's just been better than Angle this year(not really a shock, though).

Yeah, Eddy rocked this world and a few neighbouring ones.

His ladder match with RVD is my pick for Match Of The Year, and the fact he carried on despite the crazed fan run-in shows just how great he has been. This year he went from nothing to someone who could believably win the World Title (if booked that way, yeah right), which nobody else has done.

Wrestler of The Year: Eddy Guerrero

He didn't win all the big matches and get all the titles but he proved that night in and night out he is the real deal. The more and more I watch Eddy the better he gets. Vince should sit all the wrestlers (except Benoit) in the front row when this guy wrestles so they can take notes and learn from the best.

I'd have to agree with Eddy Guerrero as my pick for wrestler of the year, everything he's done has been gold.

I'll go with Eddy too. Benoit and Angle were great, but Eddy just snuck ahead of them.

Since we're giving our opinions on the year end, I would like to say that Edge is most improved.

We should make up a bunch of catergories and make a thread with them all.

Guerrero barely over Angle. But we all know who will win Wrestler of the Year, so this is just wishful thinking on our part.

1)Eddie Guerrero

2)Kurt Angle

3)Edge

4)Chris Benoit

5)Brock Lesnar

6)Rey Rey

7)Triple H(well he did win a lot)

8)RVD

9)The Undertaker(see HHH)

10)HBK(he's still undefeated since coming back(?), and for someone coming back from a bad back, his matches are pretty damn good, even though he shouldn't be World Champion)

Eddy by a fucking mile.

Successfully comes back from heavy personal difficulties, busts his ass in the indys to prove he still has it, gets re-signed, and consistently delivers more ****+ matches than anyone in the company.

Overall, I'd put Jerry Lynn at #2 actually, no one works harder and takes more bookings than Lynn in the indies right now. He puts on a solid performance every time, often a great one, and is incredible at carrying green talent.

*Wrestler of the Year: Eddie Guerrero

*Wrestler of the Year (in a traditional sense; i.e., had to have a successful year in storyline terms as well as decent matches):

Brock Lesnar [by default really; Jericho was buried too much, and Hogan (weak title reign, JTTS), Taker (bad matches), HHH (obvious reasons), Rock (not around much), Big Show (general suckiness) and HBK (part-timer) are not viable contenders]

*Most Improved Wrestler: Edge

*Rookie of the Year: By gosh golly, I wonder who this could be

*Non-rookie Breakout Star of the Year: None

*Tag Team of the Year: None

*Biggest draw: N/A

*Most Valuable Persona to WWE: Paul Heyman (I blinked, and he had gotten Big Show over)

*Smartest Wrestler: Steve Austin

Oh, and ShooterJay, who are those guys in your sig (other than Maven and Dreamer)? And what does it say on the shirt of the guy sitting down on the left?

Eddie Guerrero, followed by Jerry Lynn and Jericho(despite having a bad year of getting buried).

With the majority on this one, Eddie G with an honourable mention for Edge, who really came on leaps and bounds over the course of the year.

I'll jump on the Eddie (is it Eddie or Eddy?) bandwagon as well. I thought the guy was close to sunk when Austin decided just to use him to get himself over and then I figured you might as well stick a fork in him after Austin left him high and dry. Christ, what a difference a few months can make. And you guys have to give a little credit to the booking team for giving him enough airtime on SD to get over. The standing ovation after his ladder match with Edge was amazing for a guy who was previously remembered by most marks as driving to the ring in a lowrider with Chyna.

Other people this year who I think have improved or done pretty well this year would be Trish Stratus (womens league), Eric Bischoff (promo duties), and Hulk Hogan (for giving it that one last try and mostly putting his ego to rest.)

My big Loser of the Year award goes to Steve Austin, for reasons that have been discussed here time and time again. From walking out of live TV tapings, to refusing to put over a youngster that The Rock, Hulk Hogan, and even Undertaker (eventually) laid down for, to beating up a woman over 100 pounds lighter than he is. Distant second place goes to The Rock for being able to have the entire company bow down to him for his two month cups of coffee vists with wrestling when he isn't pissing off the fans by running to Hollywood. HHH is third.

Eddie (Eddy) Guerrero gets my vote too. RVD gets honourable mention in my book.

deputyhawk's world renowned push-me poll says...

1--triple-h (he won. and won. and won.)

2--chris jericho (2002 will be seen as jericho's biggest ever year in wrestling, despite the fact he drizzled off into nothingness during the last six months. sad.)

3--the undertaker (the immortal phenom just never stops. or jobs.)

4--rob van dam (they don't want to push him right to the top, but he's so close they'll probably end up having to)

5--kurt angle (wwe's mr dependable, should be in line for a monster shove in 2003 now that he's opted out of his olympic comeback)

6--jeff jarrett (promotional figurehead of both the disorganized wwa all-stars and later in the year, his pops' glorified local indy fed)

7--brock lesnar (rookie monster shoved down our throats second half of the year. he arguably deserved it, too).

8--the rock (still the biggest star in wrestling, just doesn't really wrestle very often)

9--hulk hogan (monster nostalgia pop at wm18 was a great moment, but arguably ruined the remainder of his comeback tour)

10-steve austin (the main man on raw following the roster split until he realised he didn't give a shit anymore)

11-ron killings (nwa:tna's breakout star, huge improvements shown)

12-the big show (example of how easy it is to make a loser credible again when the promotional machine gets behind you enough. still shit in the ring, though)

13-kane (last ever i-c champ, pushed into main event status, fucked a corpse and liked it, retracted from main event status. funny cos it's true.)

14-jerry lynn (the indy scene's mvp, mr j-l was everywhere this year, usually putting on blinding matches while he was at it.)

15-shawn michaels (performing better than he has any right to after such a serious back injury, but still nowhere near his prime)

16-ken shamrock (the first ever nwa:tna champion got an ass whoopin in the real fights, so should be back in wwe with his tail between his legs pretty soon)

17-edge (consistently pushed on smackdown to the point where he's almost been accepted as a legit main eventer)

18-eddie guerrero (after some stellar performances on the indy circuit, back in the wwe and better than ever before).

19-chris benoit (fears that his neck surgery would leave him a shell of his former self thankfully put to rest during second half of the year).

20-booker t (turned face due to comedy goldust pairing, second only to rvd on raw in terms of being over. glass ceiling? where?).
