Guest cynicalprofit Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Using those not currently employed as an announcer. I think Styles could do it fine by himself. Meltzer would be cool as well. Whos your picks.
Guest Dace59 Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Dear god no, not either of them! Why would you want to change the pbp at all? The why it sounds, and them almost having heart attacks, perfect.
EL DANDY~! Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Easy. Dace on PBP and me on Color. In all reality. I say that somebody who knows puroresu, like say, Tenay, would be a good fit. I'm not really sure about anyone else.
Guest RedJed Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 The play by play can be just someone who knows their wrestling, probably Tenay or Styles. But as far as color, maybe Sonny Ono or Wally Yamaguchi or something, just someone who is familiar here in the states, but knows everything puro-wise as well.
Guest BAR Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Tough one between Styles and Tenay. They both seem very knowledgable. Maybe Joey as I can't imagine Mike doing it on his own, Joey's already done it.
Guest Lord of The Curry Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Stick Tenay with Coach or Kevin Kelly, as they seem to be the two best T.V men the WWE has nowadays. Kelly is consitently good on Velocity and Raven/Coach was the best announce team of 2002 IMO.
Guest areacode212 Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 No love for the team of John Watanabe and Dan Lovranski? They're the only english-speaking guys I've ever heard announcing over puroresu, so they were the first team that came to mind. Yeah, they can be loud and pretty annoying, but if they turned it down a bit, they're pretty good at explaining backstory and psychology. Tenay would probably be a good choice. I don't know about Meltzer, though. Didn't he & Cornette do some commentary on those Wrestling Gold DVDs? How was he on those? I can't really imagine him doing straight kayfabed commentary.
Guest Lord of The Curry Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Why would there be love for Lovranski and Watanabe? They fuckin suck, who cares if they're the only english speaking guys? I grabbed an FMW tape when I was on vacation in San Francisco and the commentary is absolute shite, complete with weak humour and retarded sexual references. As if either of those guys could ever get laid by some of the Japanese porn stars I saw on the tape. Lovranski should just stick to being second bannana to Jeff Marek on Live Audio Wrestling and looking like a jackass for mocking Hogan 24/7.
Guest razazteca Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Never speak of Wantabe or any of the FMW announcers in a good sense. They were by far the worst team ever, at times they were more annoying than the local indy announcers, whose day job is working on radio. Cole and Tazz has been doing a decent job along with TE Josh so they could easily put over any wrestler more effective than the current old timer announcer team from RAW. If they are going to bring in somebody new my "steal" the Prof Mike Tenay.
Guest CED Ordonez Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 HEIL SUBTITLES~! [/anime purist mode] I completely dig the way most Japanese announcers sound when they completely shill a match. For me, I'd just want some subtitles on the bottom of the screen so I can occasionally glance down and read some match backstories, color commentary, etc. As good as some English announcers can be, I rather would have the original feel of the match, hence I'd keep the original Japanese dialogue and throw in some subtitles. I'm probably the minority with this opinion, but that's how I'd like it.
Guest Coffin Surfer Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 Subtitles all the way! All Japan had the greatest commentator ever, I forgot his name but I believe he died not to long ago. Baba's occasional grumbling was annoying at times, but to dub over it with some jackass that probably couldn't even prenounce the guys names(coughStylescough)would be fucking stupid. I would love to read a translation of 6/3/94, I bet it would be real interesting stuff. But leave the original commentators.
Guest wolverine Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 Akira Fukuzawa is who you are thinking of CS. Yes, he is the greatest commentator ever and no he didn't die - he left the business for some game show in Japan.
Guest The Metal Maniac Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 I can understand the desire to hear the original commentators (Hearing them freak out can be worth the price of admission alone) but I'd like to actually KNOW what's going on - I say the best bet would be DVD's where you could select either the Japanese commentators, or some American ones. I nominate Tenay, because I've seen him call a lucha match (Los Gringos Locos vs. Octagon and El Sainto or something...2/3, double hair vs. double mask...someone must know the match I'm talking about) and he did a good job of explaining the match to people who had never seen lucha before. It all made sense to me, so if he can do the same with puro, power to him. Not Styles. I hate Styles, just because he acts so damn smart, even when he makes mistakes.
ravenlo Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 I'd like subtitles-I enjoyed them on the Kawasaki(sp?) death match fmw tape for the Hayabusa and Mr. Gannosuke promos...
Guest snuffbox Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 So nobody here likes the two asspuppets who do the commentsry on the Tokyopop FMW videos? I like those two, at least for comedic value, theyre ttwo of the intentionally stupidest and homoerotic people Ive heard, and its kinda like a slightly more serious version of Stranglemania. "That chair is traditional martial arts weapon, its been cataloged since the middle-ages. And that is a perfectly legal maneuver John!" Seriously though, Id pick Joey Styles. Maybe just go with Don Callis for color, they have a good chemistry, and hes not the stupidest guy in the world either.
Guest Downhome Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 If it could be anyone ever, I'd want Gordon Solie and Bobby Heenan, heh. I'll go for Mike Tenay and Joey Styles, both of them. I'd rather have subtitles also however. TIGAHHHHHHHH DRIVAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 Hmmm...if so much wasn't lost in the translation, I'd say get two people to read a transcript of the commentary for the match, word-for-word at the right spots, for a US production of puro. It'd be like sub-titles, but if you get two English-speaking people that can imitate the attitude of the original commentary team, it wouldn't be too bad.
Guest Downhome Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 As long as they don't allow Joel Gertner and Missy Hyatt to do it like they did on a few Japanese PPV's that were shown over here after in Japen. Oh my freaking GOD, I can't express to you how fucking horrible that was.
Guest CoreyLazarus416 Posted January 11, 2003 Report Posted January 11, 2003 I dunno, I thought Gertner was pretty good at PBP. Not up to his usual color goodness, but still enjoyable. Hyatt = bad no matter HOW you cut it, but I thought Gertner made even the uber-boring matches (every match on that first WK Media PPV but Acid/Winger and the main) somewhat enjoyable.

Yes, he was good and seemd to know much more than I ever thought he could present, HOWEVER, Missy ruined anything they had to say for me, period. I had to listed to most of it on mute she got on my nerves so badly.
Guest midnight_burn Posted January 11, 2003 Report Posted January 11, 2003 Dusty Rhodes and Steve "Mongo" McMichael should do it, now there's a commentary team.
Guest Dace59 Posted January 11, 2003 Report Posted January 11, 2003 Styles... please god not Styles people. The fact he was half decent just makes his mistakes look even worse.
Guest Phoenix Fury Legdrop Posted January 15, 2003 Report Posted January 15, 2003 If you must overdub the original commentary, get Dan Wilson on P-B-P. Not just sucking up, but the man has called some of the most obscure Japanese moves on Wildside TV (I think he's the only announcer in the U.S. to ever call the Nagasateru, and regularly call it; he also somehow found a way to tie the Triple Crown in with a Jay vs. Mark Briscoe match). No American color man should do color for these tapes. The US color style anymore, filled with "jokes" and "laughter, doesn't seem like it'd fit in with the puro style.
LooseCannon25 Posted January 16, 2003 Report Posted January 16, 2003 Watanabe had to be the worst guy i ever heard. I got some FMW tapes and he's just awful. His dumb ass sense of humor and constant delay in calling moves is extremely annoying. I would say bring in Mike Tenay and team him up with the newest commentator on the block soon..............Johnny Ace .......or maybe just stick Tazz in there with Joey Styles
Ultimo Dugas Posted January 18, 2003 Report Posted January 18, 2003 I say Styles or Tenay and Heenan. I love classic heel announcing.
