My personal favorites:

#1 - Big Boi and Dre from Outkast. Probably my favorite rap group, because they're ridiculously clever, super funky, and always pushing the envelope. I call them the perfect modern mix of bob your head and experimenting.

#2 - Q-Tip. It's strange for a middle-class white boy to be using the phrase "flow," but Q-Tip and crew are so gloriously jazzy that I feel I can say his flow rules.

#3 - Wu-Tang. I don't like them very much as solo artists with the exception of a few ODB guilty pleasures, but as a collective, I love em. Awesome, spare production, and Method Man and Ghostface Killah on the mic.

#4 - Jay-Z. The man absolutely exudes confidence, and he raps a lot smarter than most people give him credit for. Great singles, plus The Blueprint, which I can listen to any day of the week.

#5 - NWA. Straight Outta Compton is just great, efil4ZaggiN is horrifically vulgar but strangely funny, and they're altogether a legendary group.

Honorable mentions to all the obvious, most notably Dr. Dre and Public Enemy. The only reason Public Enemy doesn't get on here is because I'm not really a fan of the Bomb Squad's style of production, which takes a little out of it for me.

1) Devin the Dude - Best originality.

2) Royce the 5'9 - The bomb lyrically..needs more depth to his rhymes.

3) Nas - Another all-original MC.

4) Crooked I - Best complex rhyme schemer who makes sense and tells stories.

5) Yukmouth - Extremely ignorant sometimes...i wish he'd stop rapping about money.

I put my selections in groups because it is so hard just to pick one.

1. Dr Dre and everybody he ever worked with, all he does is produce hits.

2. Timbaland & Missy is another favorite producer team of mine.

3. All of the members of what I like to call the new Soul movement (Roots, Dungeon Family, Erica Badu, Musiq, Jill Scott, Common) The retro 70s funky soulful hip hop sound of this group is musical innovation. Too bad this fad comes and goes every few years with diff groups.

4. Busta Rhymes - nice vocal range from fast mind numbing flow to raspy gimmick voice. Seems to be on every damn remix there every was but he works well in a group environment.

5. Mos Def - The Soundbombing and lyical lounge albums are great.

I don't listen to too much rap to have 5 favorites, but my favorite is Eminem.

The problem with Nu Soul for this thread it is mostly singers. The Roots are Nu Soul rappers. Also Common. Rest are singers.
