Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted May 1, 2003 Nirvana...I just don't get it, I'm afraid. I appreciate their impact, but as Kinetic (~!) pointed out, every band that came after them was terrible. Thus, whilst they might have woken people up in the midst of a load of shit, I fail to see how they gave us anything good in the long run. And Soundgarden were better. As I said in my first post, I'll concede that personal opinion isn't going to constitute me putting someone on my list if they were revolutionary, but I don't consider Nirvana to fit that description. Well, alright, maybe, but they put me to sleep.
Guest Anorak Report post Posted May 1, 2003 I'd file the following revered artists in the 'don't do anything for me' category. Pink Floyd Led Zeppelin The Smiths Elvis Costello Talking Heads Any 'post-rock' bands = Tortoise/ Stereolab etc We should have an overated albums pt 2 thread. Guest IDrinkRatsMilk Report post Posted May 2, 2003 ICP is supposed to suck. They'll tell you they do. They'll say they wear make up because they weren't talented enough to make it otherwise, though perhaps not in as many words.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted May 2, 2003 Pink Floyd (if you're stoned out of you're mind... maybe) Here's reason number one why I love Floyd: Variation. They have such a knack for putting albums together that each have a sound that stands out as a whole, but songs that sound nothing alike, if that makes any sense. Listen to Meddle to see what I mean, that's the perfect example. Not to mention the fact that they're all top-notch musicians as well as songwriters. To get a good feel for their different styles, give the studio cd of Ummagumma a listen. A brilliant concept, with everyone doing their own thing, and all of it being really goddamn good. In terms of quality songs and albums, longevity, and talent, they're hard to top in my book.
B. Brian Brunzell 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2003 Thank you, Oblivion. You summed up my feelings on The Floyd perfectly. Ummagumma is a wonderful piece of music to own. All I need is "Sysyphus" and I'm hooked on the disc. And the live disc is blow-away stuff, especially "Careful with that Axe, Eugene." I have that song on five different Floyd albums, and it's different each time.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh 0 Report post Posted May 2, 2003 Yeah, Floyd rocked. At least till roger left. My list of overated bands: Red Hot Chilli Peppers Metallica Tenacious D (yeah they're a joke band, but they still suck) Nirvana Foo Fighters. Ah, Fuck it: Anythhing Dave Grohl has ever done sucks. The guys cool, but his music is SO overated. He even turned QOTSA from great on Rated R to DIABOLICAL on their last album.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted May 2, 2003 The only artists that should EVER be considered truly overrated are the cookie cutter "pop" artists that are around just so record companies can profit on a trend. Not all "pop" is bad, but no one can deny that a high percentage of cookie cutter artists suck. These sort of bands getting hyped up is the definition of over-rated. The only band that I personally find completely over-rated is KISS. Sure i guess they may be talented, but alot of people treat them as some sort of god. I mean come on they're a glorified hair metal band.

Guest FeArHaVoC Report post Posted May 2, 2003 I don't how anyone can say Red Hot Chilli Peppers are overrated? I've never heard anyone ever say "Red Hot Chilli Peppers are the greatest band in the world!" They're really good, and Flea is in a league of his own. However, I think for the most part, people just enjoy their music and have fun with it. I don't think people hear their name and go "Red Hot Chilli Peppers are GODS!" RHCP's are just one of those bands, Foo Fighters also, who are really good bands and make great/good songs, but don;t fall under that "Greatest Ever" League. Guest nl5xsk1 Report post Posted May 2, 2003 I have to add replies to two different quotes, but unfortunately I'm not smart enough to know how to do a quote from two different posts, so won't actually have the dope little "quote box" ... Nirvana: I distinctly remember Cobain being referred to as "the Jimi Hendrix of this generation" ... which is utter shite. There's no comparison between someone who is still considered a legend 30+ years after his death to someone who was almost off the radar until the box-set drama emerged. Nirvana was a good band - not a great band - and certainly gets far too much smoke blown up their ass. Stereolab: If you ask 100 people to name a song of theirs, or an album, or a bandmember, or even who the fuck they are, maybe 2 or 3 will be able to do so. How can they be overrated if they're virtually unknown?!?

Nirvana was a good band - not a great band - and certainly gets far too much smoke blown up their ass. I can see the comparison between Hendrix and Cobain... They both died at very young ages and were only part of the scene for about 3 quick years before their deaths. I would be willing to compare the two, Not on Talent because Cobain gets smoked there... But the Impact they left and the legancy they leave behind are very comparable. It's been 30 Years since Hendrix's Death and almost 10 years since Cobain's death... People still remember Hendrix and often Imitate him as best as they can...and they do the same for Cobain for the moment. Will Kurt Cobain be imitated in 2013? Yes, He will because Nirvana will always be considered some sort of Beatles like Revoultion...When in all liklihood, It wasn't Nirvana that was the Revolution, but merely that generation's and Nirvana just happened to be playing on the radio at the time. Was Nrivana a Great Band? I am willing to say yes. Are Nrivana Over rated? Yes and No. They WERE a great band and I doubt many people will argue that...but they ARE over rated thanks to the hype that Cobain inadvertly gave himself by commiting Suicide, something that has allowed people to claim Cobain as an Martyr for our Generation. However, they still get hyped up, receive endless radio play and acheive fame thanks to an ad department. The bands that follow that formula are the only truly over-rated artists. Most people label a band over-rated just because they personally dislike them regardless of their talent. Hell I even do it.

At the moment, in the uk at least, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are the underground darlings, along with QOTSA. They're the mainstream bands its ok to like, and as a result a lot of people are talking them up. Yeah, All the members, and the bands themselves, are undoubtedly skilled, but their newer songs are too MOR to be touted as being amazing.
Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted May 3, 2003 I am officially sick to death of the chili peppers, and I live in UK. You're right. The new stuff sounds like someone doing an impression of RHCP, it's so formulaic. And so, so overplayed. I've actually heard the singles so many times now that I've started to appreciate them as good pop rock, but I only attribute that to me hating them so much I've swung all the way back round to not hating them again. Guest godthedog Report post Posted May 3, 2003 Led Zeppelin zeppelin is a band that grabs you by the balls, mang. if they don't grab you, you have no balls. i think pj harvey gets overrated in certain circles. some of her stuff is awesome, and 'rid of me' is one of my favorite albums, but lots of stuff she did leaves a lot to be desired--there's plenty of tracks on 'to bring you my love' that i consider filler. nirvana & the beatles both suffer from being overrated from simple overexposure. nobody is THAT good. Guest Kinetic Report post Posted May 4, 2003 Stereolab: If you ask 100 people to name a song of theirs, or an album, or a bandmember, or even who the fuck they are, maybe 2 or 3 will be able to do so. How can they be overrated if they're virtually unknown?!? Well, therein lies the aspect that makes threads like this pointless and confusing, i.e. who are the people that are rating these bands? Because, sure, your average musically ignorant person on the street isn't going to know who Stereolab is, whereas they're a pretty well-liked band amongst your indie rock set (everything up to and including Emperor Tomato Ketchup, anyway). So let's say that the 100 people you're surveying are sporting horn-rimmed glasses and All Stars...then we can really begin to fairly assess this information and come to a satisfactory conclusion w/r/t Stereolab's being overrated. I think they fucking suck, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them overrated. So there's one vote.

Well, have you heard any of the following albums in their entirety? Meddle Atom Heart Mother Obscured By Clouds Animals Piper At The Gates Of Dawn Ummagumma Saucerful of Secrets ... If all you've heard by them is The Wall, and say, Wish You Were Here, I can see how one might think they're overrated. Check out the earlier material though, when they were still being fairly experimental. If there's nothing on those seven albums I listed above that you can get into, you're beyond help. Guest saturnmark4life Report post Posted May 4, 2003 With KISS, the thing is that they weren't talented. It' cool stupid party rock an roooowwwwlllllll, if you will. They're a favourite, but I don't think they're overrated in terms of actual talent, cos that's not what's good about them. I only go with the early stuff, btw.
